This is the way God spoke to our generation about shaking the foundations. You have laid the foundation of the earth from of old, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
The Shaking of the Foundations by Paul Tillich
We Live in Two Orders
The negative character of the historical order is the positive character of the divine order. The divine order cannot be judged by the measures of the historical order.
The Paradox of the Beatitudes
The Beatitudes do not praise those who are poor and in misery, individuals or classes, because they are poor. Misery is not promised to the wealthy and secure, to classes or individuals.
The Two Servants of Jahweh
But if we turn to the true servants and to the true God they serve, the God of history, we will know about the future. If we turn to the true servants and to the true God they serve, the God of history, we will know about the future.
Meditatioin: The Mystery of Time
His life and each one of us is permeated in every moment, in every experience and in every expression, by the mystery of time. There is no presence in the mere flow of time; but the present is real, as our experience testifies.
The Escape from God
Omnipresence, which is the doctrine that God is everywhere, and divine omniscience, which is the doctrine that God knows everything. And the trembling of the heart before the omniscient God is replaced by anger against people.
The Depth of Existence
But in the depths of our social structure, the forces of destruction have already strengthened. The depth of sacrifice, suffering and cross is required from our thinking.
On the Transitoriness of Life
And now let us listen again to the words of the apostle about the tragedy of nature in their precise meaning. Sympathy with nature in her tragedy is not a sentimental emotion; it is a real sense of the reality of nature. Let us listen again to the words of the prophet about the salvation of nature.
As one theologian has rightly said, "Corporeal being is the end of God's ways."
The Experience of the Holy
And the Lord has removed people far away, and there is a great desolation in the midst of the land. The same sentiment is expressed in the cry of the seraphim, "Holy" has a double meaning, as the context clearly shows. Humanism has forgotten that the majesty of God, as experienced by the prophet, involves shaking the foundations.
Consequently, they do not possess the truth and righteousness and purity of the God who is truly God.
The Yoke of Religion
This is the yoke of the law, which was imposed on the people of his time by the religious teachers, the wise and prudent, as he calls them after ours, the scribes and the Pharisees, as they are commonly called. Those who toil and are heavy laden are those who sigh under the yoke. This is the depth of Jesus' words; it is the truth implied in the emotional power of his words.
It is the uniqueness and mystery of His Being, the embodiment, the full manifestation of the New Being.
The Meaning of Providence
After reading a paper written by the great Einstein in which he challenges the belief in a personal God, I concluded that there was no difference between his feeling and that of the unsophisticated soldiers. Rather, it is a question of the most powerful, the most paradoxical and the most daring faith. But the substance of the belief in providence is this: when death rains from heaven, as it does now, when cruelty exercises power over nations and individuals, as it does now, when hunger and persecution drive millions from place to place, as they do now, and when prisons and slums all over the world distort the humanity of men's bodies and souls, as they do now, we can boast at that time, and precisely at that time, that even all this cannot separate us from the love of God.
Providence and forgiveness of sins are not two separate aspects of the Christian faith; they are one and the same -- the assurance that we can attain eternal life despite suffering and sin.
Knowledge Through Love
However, love implies seeing eye to eye and knowing the center of the other. This is the love that sees, it is the love that looks into the depth of God's Heart and into the depth of our heart. Therefore, the greatest thing of all; therefore God himself is love; therefore, Christ, as a manifestation of God's love, is full of grace and truth.
But Paul never again tried to build a new, comfortable house from the pieces.
Doing the Truth
Truth is something new, something that God has done in history and, because of that, something that is done in individual lives. Therefore, in Christianity the opposite of truth is the lie, and not - as it was in Greece - thought. Christian theology is rooted in the concept of truth, in which no separation between theory and practice is accepted, for this truth is saving truth.
And saving truth means that truth that becomes; saving truth is in "he that doeth the truth."
The Theologian
And the word of wisdom and knowledge, theology, according to the testimony of the whole. This statement is the mystery and foundation of the Christian Church, a paradox and. Theology is the work of the Church precisely because it is a gift of God's Spirit.
If someone were to come and tell us that he certainly belongs to the Church, that he no longer doubts that Jesus is the Christ, that he constantly experiences the grip of the Divine Spirit and the gift of spiritual knowledge, what should be the answer to him.
THEOLOGIAN (Part II)
The Witness of the Spirit to the Spirit
Now, if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God.
34; The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God." These words imply that our spirit is incapable of giving us such assurance.
He Who Is the Christ
It is the characteristic feeling of the Jewish people, the feeling that prevents them from becoming Christians. He was to be rejected by the political authorities of the nation whose king Christ was to be. In the image of the Crucified, we see humanity's rejection of the divine.
When the divine manifests as the new reality, it must be rejected by the representatives of the old reality.
Waiting
I mean the theologian who does not wait for God, because he possesses him, imprisoned in doctrine. I mean the Bible student who doesn't wait for God because he has Him, locked up in a book. I am thinking of the churchman who does not wait for God because he possesses him, imprisoned in an institution.
I think of the believer who does not wait for God, because he owns Him, locked inside his experience.
You Are Accepted
This is the condition of our entire existence, from its beginning to its end. The sense of our separation from the rest of life is most acute when we are surrounded by it in noise and talk. Our generation knows more than the generation of our fathers about the hidden hostility in the soil of our souls.
Because we all know that we are eternally and inescapably bound to the ground of our being.
Born in a Grave
We have become desensitized to the infinite tension implied in the words of the Apostles' Creed: “suffered. Only if we take the "buried" in the Gospel stories so seriously can we evaluate the Easter stories and can evaluate the gravedigger's words: "Who else but the Messiah can be born in the grave?" His question has two aspects. It doesn't happen every day, but it happens on the day of the Messiah.
But if the new life has come out of the grave, then the Messiah himself has appeared.
The Destruction of Death
This terrifying presence of death subjects man to slavery and servitude throughout his life, according to our text. And now we know what the sting of death is, and why the devil has the power over death: we have lost our immortality. If we serve the fear of death during our lives, it means that we are serving the fear of death, which is at the same time nature and guilt.
Summary Statement: The dread presence of death subjects man to slavery and servitude throughout life, according to our text.
Behold, I Am Doing a New Thing
And surely such illusions are not the content of the prophetic and apostolic preaching concerning the new. The new does not emerge from a collection of the elements of the old that are still alive. By trying, we would bring forth the old in the power of the old, but not the new in the power of the new.
But they knew that neither they nor any of the old things would bring forth the new.
