The seal had been damaged during assembly and the inside of the action has a few sharp edges - no doubt the cause of that problem. I lightly oil the trigger and the start of the action to help get the seal in undamaged.

Carefully cut off the rolled pieces of gasket and since it was a tight fit, resize a bit with 240 wet and dry. Paint a small (more consistent but louder) or thick coat of grease on the spring, the lump on the main lever where it holds the spring under tension, and a little on the outer edge of the seal.

Make the preparation shown in Fig. 21, and by placing 120-grit paper in the slot and inserting it into the drill, clean the inside of the action tube. With half of the spring coil lost, I was able to manually push the trigger block into the action barrel and replace the two pins.

It's quite a bit heavier than the minimum, but I'm used to it now, so I'll probably leave it as is. It is now much better than before and I am amazed at how smooth the standard M16 stock is, a bit of rubber definitely helps secure the rifle in the shoulder.

Howas are imported and distributed in the UK by Highland Outdoors and as well as the individual models they offer stocks from Hogue, Howa themselves, Bell & Carlson, Knox and also GRS (Grodas Rifle Stocks) in Norway. The real difference is that it comes from Highland Outdoors in a GRS stock which is really a nice piece of design and.

I first tested a 223 Rem version many years ago and it was a good one - 22" heavy barrel, 1-12" twist, threaded ½ x 20 UNF and the action dropped into a very nice Howa thumb hole (T/ H) stock with heavy free-float front end and ventilation openings. The bolt handle angles back slightly and has a 3-position safety at the rear right of the action – forward – FIRE, center – SAFE with bolt drive and all the way back FULL SAFE (bolt locked).
BETTER!
The one thing I would say about this kit is that the manufacture put the release catch forward and it is not protected / covered in any way. That's the beauty of the Howa then, because it's such a popular gun that there are a number of accessories for it.

One caliber I don't think I will ever own is a 22-250 Rem, my reasons are simple and based on maximum effective range. If you intend to shoot primarily from a vehicle, you can choose a heavier, varmint-type barrel, which will be more durable since it doesn't heat up as quickly.

Finally with the base of the slide up (view down) pull the barrel forward ¼” and lift the rear chamber up and then slide the whole thing out the back.
