Sikambang that is the folklore of Batak Malay community; a kind of musical art that consists of song and traditional dance. It is made in rhymed verses like sayings or proverbs that usually contains good teaching. This kind of art work that perform meaningful philosophy of life. Sikambang is the inheritance civilization of the kingdom in the coastal area of Batak region; and this is not the acculturation absorbed.

The topic of Sikambang could be variatious. It could be about husband and wife, a pair of sweetheart, social ethics, morality, and friendship.

This is a kind of descriptive study aims at describing the meaning

conveyed in every kinds of Sikambang, like that of Pantun Sibolga ‘The

Traditional Poetry of Sibolga which has also great influence from Arabic

traditions (the coastal area of Central Tapanuli in the region of Batak,

where Malay language is used instead of Batak language. As we know

Malay means Muslim in this area).

The Bride, who should pay fine to the Pariban wearing Ulos, because of getting married to another Man (In Batak traditions boru tulang,

uncle’s daughter’ should marry her pariban who is her aunty’s son

Here is the songs of Batak as a comparison

• The Song of happiness: Sian mandailing godang do asal mulani sitogol beta hita margumbira do, marsitogol sitogol si togol dabo.

• The song of Love to the Mother: Inang boasama sai solsolonmu sude hu taon doi, sude halungunakki

• The Song of Love who is being Gloomy: Sai anju ma au 2x ito hasian….., sai anju ma au 2x ito na labu……….

Ahado alanna, dia do boccirna hasian………

Ombak barayun manuju pantai ‘The wave is swaying towards the seashore’

Riaknyo manuju tapi pasi ‘The wave is going towards the seashore’

Apolah gunonya jadi orang pandai ‘It would be useless to be a clever people’

Kok barilmu indak ba budi ‘If you are clever, but you are not kind hearted’

The meaning conveyed by these verses is that every people in the world is not only necessarily to be clever people, but they should be wise in the society as well.

kok pande ba kain panjang ‘if you are clever wearing kain panjang’

hampi sarupo ba kain sarung ‘it would be as simple of wearing Sarong’

kok pande ba induk samang ‘if you are clever of living with other people’

hampi sarupo ba umak kandung ‘it would be as simple of living with your own mother’

rumah gadang ba dinding jari ‘A big house in fingers wall’

jandelanyo jangan di bukakkan ‘the window of which may not be opened’

antaro hiduk samo mati ‘ that I am almost facing my death’

kok adik dak dapek dilupokan ‘but I you are always in my rememberence’

cincin banamo si ganto sari ‘the ring is named ganto sari

sasuai sajo di kalingking ‘that it really fits with my finger’

hilang kamano ambo cari ‘I really can’t afford of looking for you’

lautan sajo nan ba kuliling ‘that it is the ocean comes around me’

Ala lamo indak ka rimbo ‘it has been a long time that I don’t go to the forest’

Pai ka rimbo mamutik bungo ‘going to the forest to get some flower’

Bakiro mamaliharo anak harimo ‘it is like keeping the tiger’s

Baju rabik badan di cakko ‘your cloth will be torn, and your body will be scratched out’

ba kukkuk ayam di musala ‘the cock is crocking in the island of Mursala’

kukkuk nyo dare ba dangakan ‘the crock is heard so loud’

hujan di langik punyo sala ‘the fault is by the rain in the sky’

ombak di lawik mananggungkan ‘but why should the wave of the ocean has the burden’

Pulo Pandan jauh di tanga ‘Pandan island is far in the middle of the ocean’

Dibalik Pulo Angso Duo ‘it is far behind the island of Angso Duo’

Hancur badan di kandung tana ‘the body is already dissolved there in land’

Sibolga kito taringek juo ‘but we still always remember Sibolga, our land’

The Legend of Putri Runduk, a very beautiful queen of Javadana kingdom of Jayadana and everybody struggled to get married with her. She is really fascinating, in that she was famous for her beauty, that the news reached untill the other kingdom’s areas as far as Barus. Barus at that time was a trade port. There were many kings who speculated to get her, ranging from the king of Janggi from Sudan-Africa, king Sanjaya from Mataram, even from the kingdom of China wanted to get married with her.

PERSONAL PARTICULARS

I am Masnidar Tanjung, Dra., M.Pd, Linguistic Doctor Candidate of Padjadjaran University of Indonesia and the lecturer of Muhammadiyah University of Prof. DR. Hamka, Jakarta Indonesia. I have the ability to speak English fluently, Fairly Arabic, and poorly Japanesse. I have also ever got award as the runner up of Best Lecturer Competition at the Province Level. As a lecturer of English, herewith I can describe the subjects I usually teach are Linguistics, Morphology, Syntaxes, Phonology, Semantics, Grammar, Reading, Writing, Contrastive and Error Analysis, Translation, Research Methodology, Teaching Methodology, and Vocational Arabic. Finally, I will inform here with my latest experience as a presenter during an International Seminar in Ma Chung University, 2010, with the topic The Development of KTSP in the Teaching of English Grammatical Structure; during International Conference on Translation at Concorde Hotel Malaysia, July 2011, with the topic Translation strategy of Common Expressions from English to Indonesian;

and during Academic Consortium in Las Vegas, December 2011, with the topic the Study of Toba Malay Verbs Syntactical Pattern.
