CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
1.1. Study background
We all know sometimes people’s moods change like 180 degrees and literally have no idea what has been done to them. So there is a link between sleep and mood. First, sleep does affect mood. Second, mood or mental issues like anxiety do affect sleep quality.
Studies from the University of Pennsylvania researchers found that only 4 and a half hours of sleep for an entire week can cause stress, anger, sadness, and mental exhaustion. "There's a big relationship between psychiatric and psychological problems and sleep. So people who are depressed or have anxiety often have trouble with sleep as part of those disorders," says Dr. Lawrence Epstein, Medical Director of Sleep Health Centers and an instructor at Harvard Medical School.
In other conditions, the person who had insomnia have 4 times higher chance of having depression than usual normal person. Study said that people that has insomnia were 20 times chance higher of having anxiety and panic disorders. Meanwhile, from the large amount of data examined, it is still unclear whether because of depression people become insomniacs or because of insomnia people become depressed.
Although it is still not clear enough, the clearest evidence is that depression is caused by sleep patterns and quality.
