BALINESE HOUSE
The Balinese traditional house is built as a house compound, where daily functions are separated not by rooms, but by individual
structures within an enclosing wall.
Balinese house (kuren) consists of a family or a number of related
families living within one
enclosure, praying at a common
family temple, with one gate and
one kitchen.

Caste in Bali:
Brahmana (the highest caste), Ksatria, Waisya, and Sudra (the lowest caste).
Nowadays, it’s more difficult to know the caste of the person just by lookin at their house.

FOR YOUR
INFORMATION:
Due to caste rules, in the past, materials for building Balinese houses usually
differed from one caste to another. For example,
people from the noble
caste usually use brick as one of their materials and clay tiles as roofing
material. Meanwhile, people from other castes use clay as a building material for walls and reeds as a
material for roofs.

On the other hand, the Tri Mandala is the concept that is important to be maintained be cause of its social, environmental and economic

VENTILATION
> FROM THE BUILDING LAYOUT
> FROM THE BUILDING COMPOSITION
From the
building layout
The walled compound with a specific entrance gate is one of the Balinese home identities. With more than 1.5m high, this fence protects the exterior from unpleasant factors from outside. One of those is to avoid direct wind due to containing great amount of vapor, but the fence material is made from with natural stone of paras plastered by clay so that the air can go inside through the fence
without great amount of vapor. The wind direction above the fence can be captured and directed to the exterior and interior. This is to utilize indirect wind for internal environment
Tropical Architecture
From the building
composition
The home consists of a group of pavilion which is composed into a compound pattern and is well known with Natah.
Other name of this pattern is an open air concept or a courtyard pattern. There are separated six pavilions with large and free spaces between them, so this allows airflow providing natural ventilation for cooling and a better hygienic environment. The surface is only soil and other cases are covered by grass which is very low heat storage capacity and is easy to release to atmosphere at night. The building for kitchen as the source of heat is located at south-west to which the location is the most appropriate for it. This is because dominant wind direction
every year comes from southeast or east and northwest or west, so heat radiant from kitchen’s activities does not move to the other buildings
Tropical Architecture
Houses in Bali have a structure consisting of
Structure
Pole foot Structure (Suku bawak) / Bataran
The base of a building. The borders of a Balinese house have different heights according to their function
Pillars Saka Structure
Balinese house building pillars or what are often called saka pillars are supporting pillars in
traditional Balinese houses.
Roof Structure (Dedeleg/Petaka & Iga-iga)
Traditional Balinese buildings take the form of simple geometric shapes (square, rectangle long). And in general the shape of the roof is a pyramid. There is a combined formation of saddle and Limasan
(‘kampyah’ construction structure)

SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
There are several building materials used that
differentiate Balinese houses from others. One of them is the use of exposed red brick as the structure to form the house. Apart from bricks, traditional Balinese houses
usually use clay or rocks to build the walls of the house.
For the roofs of Balinese houses, most use reeds and a
mixture of tree fibers. However, there are also those who are starting to replace them with clay roof tiles.
Balinese house architecture also always prioritizes
harmony with nature. This can be seen from the materials used such as natural stone, bamboo and wood.
TROPICAL
ARCHITECTURE
One of the main issues with this type of roofing is its susceptibility to fire.
Thatched roofs are highly flammable and can quickly spread a fire if one
starts. To prevent this, many modern
buildings in Bali now use a synthetic
thatch made from materials like PVC
or polyester.

BALINESE HOUSE ELEMENTS THAT
INFLUENCE THERMAL COMFORT
The use of thatched roofs in Bali can be
traced back centuries and continues to be an integral part of the island's cultural heritage.
The primary material used in constructing thatched roofs is the alang-alang grass, a locally abundant plant that thrives in the tropical climate.
Apart from wood materials, traditional
Balinese houses use Alang-Alang Thatched
Roofs: Balinese houses often feature steeply
pitched roofs covered with thick alang-alang
grass that provides insulation and protection
from the tropical climate.
