DESIGN
23 the study of the Scriptures in the original languages, and for the pursuit of all the branches of a complete theological education;. It is found that these aims are satisfactorily met by the plan of the Seminary. This does not suggest weaning students away from completing their university course; on the contrary, its influence is strongly in favor of full collegiate education "·here it is practically possible.
It should be understood, however, that the seminary is not intended to take the place of a college or a gi·ammar school. Without a proper English education already acquired, a man cannot take any part of the course in English classes. From its inception, the seminary has emphasized the importance of both comprehensive and detailed instruction in the English Bible.
In the schools of Old and New Testament interpretation, the Old Testament English and New Testament English classes have always been the largest in numbers and equal to any other in the enthusiasm with which they are taught and followed.
INDEPENDENCE OF THE SCHOOLS
Nor is he prepared for the Greek classes without at least as good a knowledge of this language as university graduates usually possess. In these three schools there is an English department intended for all, and also a higher department for those who wish to study Hebrew and Greek exegesis or to take a special course in biblical theology. Those who pursue these more learned studies may at the same time learn many things to greater advantage in the English departments, especially in obtaining those broad views of the connection of the Scriptures, which they are not so apt to secure through the medium of the original tongues .
Thus men who differ widely in general education are thrown together in most of their studies—an arrangement found largely to promote mutual understanding. The large amount of exegetical study in the English departments, the fact that only a proportion of the students undertake the more learned subjects, and the independence of the schools, make it easy to make the course as a whole more comprehensive than is practically possible . in seminaries that have the same curriculum for all. And each individual student can, with the help of the professors, when desired, such a course a.ff suits him best.
And in addition, advanced courses of study are offered in the special classes for those who are prepared to take advantage of them.

And: Mr. William F. Norton, of Broadway Baptist Church, Louisville, who died October 20, 1 SSG, left ten thousand dollars for the same object. It is clear that every student should do his best for himself and should use the help he can get from personal friends as far as possible.
But it is earnestly desired that no brother, who has called Goel to his ministry, and who is willing to work according to the instruction of the Seminary, should be prevented by his want of means from enjoying its advertising. views. Therefore, for a number of years, funds have been solicited and disbursed for the purpose of helping such men. This did not deprive anyone of the privilege of self-help 1 because the help extended never covers the full cost, leaving the .. pupil to provide for his traveling expenses, part of his board, fuel, room rent, textbooks , etc., lights, wash and do.
And although no bond has been advanced to return the money granted, it is expected and hoped that all who ar~ . assisted will, as soon as they are able, either from their own earnings, or by contributions secured from their churches, replace the sum they have received, so that it may be employed for the benefit of others in similar need. Those who wish to become students, and cannot personally obtain the means, are invited to correspond with MR. B. PRESSURE-. LEJY SMITH) New York Hall, Louisville, Ky., stating how much of the necessary amount they can supply, together with a report of their previous training.
ENDOWMENT OF SCHOOLS AND PROFESSORSHIPS
But this valuable assistance does not obviate the need for generous contributions from government councils and individuals for this important purpose year after year. Minnie Caldwell (nee ~orton) of Louisville, GaYe real estate, improved and unimproved, valued at $50,000, as an endowment for the office of President of the Seminary, known as William Be,erly Caldwell, Jr. ., endowment, in honor of her late husband, This was approved by the board in May, 1893. It was provided in the deed of gift that so much of the ineom of this endowment as the board may determine shall be applied. for the president's salary, and the rest for related purposes.
The extraordinary increase in the number of students, which is said to be greater than that of any other theological seminary in America, creates a great need for an increase in the endowment, as the additional students involve additional expenditure, and require an increased number of instruction. It is hoped that many will feel inclined to give legacies to advance the objects of the seminary, or to educate pious young men in connection with it. To the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, now located in Louisville, Kentucky, I give and bequeath a sum. or that particular plot and land, etc., etc.) which were to be used for the purpose of the said seminary, or for the education of pious young men in the association.
As in some cases bequests have been made to the Seminary and the trustees and executors have not reported them, information is earnestly sought concerning these bequests from anyone who may become acquainted.
