Adam Richards believes we are capable of living in a better world – one where the voices of people are amplified to influence how we make decisions that affect their lives. British Standards Institute’s social value committee and is an advisor to the Impact Management Project. This volume represents some of our community’s best and most current thinking, vision and experience with regard to impact management.

Impact management is the ‘how’ – the vehicle – which will help us bring into reality our greater understanding of the ‘why’. The themes explored in the following pages range from how we manage organisations to how we deploy capital, how we develop and then apply new policy and regulations and how we might use networks and organised communities to advance the global solutions we must now advance.

Without assurance there will be limited confidence in the reporting of social and environmental impacts. Assurance is most important for those groups that have little or no power over the way organisations operate. Without providing it on their behalf we will not be able to ensure accounts include all.

Ultimately, if we want organisations to make resource allocation decisions that balance social environmental and economic returns within global requirements, then we need an assurance process that is built on a legal requirement for reporting to be complete and accurate and set in context of global goals.” [hal. This will be most easily and effectively done, and they will benefit from far greater levels of stakeholder support, if they understand themselves as existing to deliver, profitably, against a meta purpose of long-term. This will involve developing a meaningful organisational purpose that picks off a part of this shared purpose that they can best contribute to, then working to align all aspects of the organisation to this purpose and holding itself accountable to its delivery.” [hal.

To alleviate the ills that have been dictated in the proceeding pages of this anthology, we need to fundamentally reimagine the limits of our current accounting framework, not letting the challenge of doing so dissuade us from starting. I believe that impact can be measured and compared and that it should be measured within an accounting framework with the aim of harnessing our economy to improve our society and planet. We must demand that they start showing the impact-weighted earnings of their profits or the ‘true’ price of the product they produce.”.

Not just the formal education of the next generation of decision makers but also the awareness raising of all as to the purpose of impact management. There is often a resistance from many to implement ideas that are beyond compliance minimums, in many cases because there is a lack of. When organisations and their decision makers view it as a means of increasing value, where insights are gained and innovations created, opinions are changed and it becomes seen as a necessary part of internal culture.

If we are being really honest, one of the things we wish was in this book is more voices of those stakeholders who have been affected by decisions as a result of being able to hold an organisation to account, thereby. This voice demonstrates the value in listening to people and shows the valuable insights that this brings to decision making.” [hal.
