USING FILM AS A MEDIA TO IMPROVE THE SPEAKING SKILLS OF THE SEVENTH GRADER OF SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 4 METRO IN THE ACADEMIC. This bachelor's thesis is entitled "THE USE OF FILM AS A MEDIA TO IMPROVE THE SPEAKING SKILLS OF THE SEVENTH GRADER OF SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 4 METRO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020".

Background of the Study

The results of the above preliminary research show that the percentage of students whose speaking ability is able to reach the Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) is 21%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the speaking ability of the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro is insufficient.

Problem Identification

Based on all the explanations above, the researcher conducted a Classroom Action Research Study to improve the quality of speaking in the seventh grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro. Therefore, the researcher constructs a research proposal entitled “The use of films as media to improve speaking ability in the seventh grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro in the academic year.

This research is expected to be useful for English teachers as one of the inspirations in teaching speaking related to the application of movies as media in teaching speaking. This research is expected to be useful to principals as a guide to consider policies in the form of English language teaching programs.

Prior Research

The similarity between this research and another previous research lies in the similarity of the variables studied, namely Film as a medium and speaking. The similarity between this research and the third previous research lies in the similarity of the variables studied, namely Films as media and speaking.

To know the student's speaking ability, the researcher uses the form of question. In this present researcher, the researcher also uses documentation to know all the data of the students in SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro.

The first meeting

In this phase, the classroom situation was effective because the colleague handed over to the researcher to make sure of the students' effectiveness before the researcher did the research in the classroom. It showed that most of the students gave their full attention to the researcher when it came time to study. The researcher turned on a movie called "Magic Cat" for 15 minutes through a laptop computer.

The students, sitting in front of the screen, tried and described the extract to their partner. Finally, some of the students, sitting with their backs to the screen, told the whole class what they have been told; their "see" and the researcher provided the chance to correct and complete their performance. The researcher began the lesson by praying, greeting, checking the attendance list and asking about the condition of the students.

Post-Test 1 Activity

Based on the result above, it could be seen that 6 students (30%) got a grade up to the standard and 14 students (70%) got a grade below the standard.

The Student's activity

From the result observation in learning process in cycle I, it is concluded that in the learning process Minimum Mastery Criteria (MMC) which is 70 of the research has not yet been reached. At the end of this cycle, the researcher analyzed and calculated all the processes such as students' pre-test grade and the result of students' post-test I grade.

The second meeting

Half of the members of the couples sat with their backs to the screen, while the other half sat opposite their partners. The researcher turned on the film titled “Meet My Family” for 15 minutes via the laptop. Meet My Family is a movie that describes about someone who is far away from her family and she finally meets his family.

Furthermore, the partner in turn asked as many questions as possible to try to find out what the film was about.

Post-Test 2 Activity

The result of the students' test in post-test 2 was better than test in post-test I before. Based on the result above, it can be deduced that 16 students (80%) were successful and 4 other students (20%) was not successful.

Observing

  • INTERPRETATION

From the table above it could be seen that the grade of the students in post-test I is insufficient. In this research, to know the students' speaking ability after the implementation of the treatment, the researcher conducted the post-test I. Based on the result of post-test 1, it could be seen that 6 students (30%) achieved a grade up to the standard and 14 students (70%) got a grade below the standard.

In this phase, the researcher continued to cycle II because the grade for posttest I in cycle I did not meet the MMC, but it was only 30%. The researcher presented posttest II to measure students' abilities after implementation of the treatment. Based on the results of the pre-test, post-test I and post-test II, it was known that there was a positive significant improvement in the students' grades.

From the graph above, it could be deduced that Film as a medium could improve students' speaking ability. The students' attention to the teacher's explanation from the first meeting to the next meeting improved. From the explanation of cycle I and cycle II, it could then be deduced that the use of film as a medium improves students' speaking ability.

The activity of the students in the group was improved from the first to the next meeting. Therefore, it is proven that the use of film improves the learning activities of students when using film. Based on the interpretation of Cycle I and Cycle II, it can be shown that using film as a medium could improve students' speaking skills.

This is because film as a medium consists of the effective teaching procedures that significantly encourage and improve students' speaking ability.

Dalam kerja kelompok terbimbing, siswa menganalisis tema film dengan fokus pada fungsi sosial dan unsur linguistik. Dengan menghadirkan film bertema negara, siswa dapat memverbalisasikan fungsi sosial dan struktur teks film bertema negara.

Mengidentifikasi struktur teks dan unsur kebahasaan dalam film deskriptif lisan tentang negara sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya. Siswa menirukan contoh pengucapan kata dan kalimat dalam film bertema negara dengan bimbingan guru. Siswa yang duduk menghadap layar harus menunjukkan kepada pasangannya film yang mereka tonton dan siswa dengan punggung menghadap layar harus menceritakannya kembali.

Dalam kerja kelompok terbimbing, siswa menganalisis gambar binatang dengan fokus pada fungsi sosial dan unsur linguistik.

Secara berpasangan, siswa menemukan informasi detail dan informasi spesifik serta ciri sosial dari film yang mereka tonton. Siswa mendapatkan umpan balik dari guru dan teman tentang semua yang mereka lakukan dalam kerja kelompok. Disajikan deskripsi film bertema orang, siswa secara lisan dapat menyebutkan fungsi sosial dan struktur teks film bertema orang.

Mengidentifikasi struktur teks dan unsur kebahasaan dalam film deskriptif lisan tentang seseorang sesuai dengan konteks penggunaannya. Gambaran tentang orang, binatang atau benda yang digambarkan dengan menyebutkan ciri-ciri atau ciri-ciri tertentu. Menjelaskan tujuan pembelajaran atau keterampilan dasar yang ingin dicapai dan menyampaikan ruang lingkup materi dan penjelasan kegiatan sesuai silabus.

Siswa menirukan contoh pengucapan kata dan kalimat dalam film dengan subjek orang dengan bimbingan guru. Siswa belajar menemukan ide pokok, informasi detail dan informasi spesifik dari film yang mereka tonton. Siswa mempertanyakan ide pokok, informasi detail dan informasi spesifik dari film deskriptif dengan subjek orang.
