STRI scientist Stanley Heckadon was invited by the environment commision at the National Assembly to talk on the
Panama Canal watershed at the inauguration of the Central American C o m m i s s i o n f o r A g r i c u l t u r e , Environment and Development, on Thursday, November 8, 9am, at the Salón Gatún, Hotel Plaza Paitilla.
Members of the National Assembly environment commission will visit the Naos Laboratories on Friday, November 19, to learn about STRI research activities in Panama, institutional iniciatives and goals, educational programs, an d scientific an d administrative staff.
La comisión ambiental de la Asamblea Nacional invitó al científico Stanley Heckadon, de STRI, a hablar sobre la cuenca del Canal de Panamá, con motivo de la instalación de la Comisión Centroamericana de Agricultura, Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo, a las 9am del jueves 8 de noviembre, en el Salón Gatún del Hotel Plaza Paitilla.
Miembros de la comisión ambiental de la Asamblea Nacional visitarán los Laboratorios de Naos viernes 19 de noviembre, para conocer sobre los proyectos de investigación de STRI en Panamá. Las iniciativas y objeticos institucionales, programas educativos, y el personal científico y administrativo.
Federal Employee Health Benefit Open Season
The Federal Employee Health Benefit (FEHB) Open Season started on November 8 and will last until December 13, 1999. During the open season, any eligible employee who is not currently participating may enroll, and any eligible enrollee may change from one plan or option to another, from self only to self and family, or make a combination of these changes.

Vacante para operador de lanchas
STRI anuncia la vacante para un operador de lanchas. Los aplicantes deben tener licencia vigente para navegación costera en embarcaciones de hasta 65' de eslora. Debe poseer conocimientos de navegación con radar, técnicas de salvamento, prevención y control de incendios, y manejo de carga y combustibles inflamables. Los candidatos deberán tener conocimientos básicos sobre el funcionamiento de motores diesel y fuera de borda a fin de poder anticipar y resolver problemas mecánicos. Además debe tener buena habilidad de comunicación oral y por escrito. Preferiblemente bilingüe. La posición se ofrece bajo contrato de servicios profesionales hasta el 31 de diciembre y por contrato de tiempo indefinido a partir del 1ro de enero del 2000.

3- year postdoctoral fellowship
The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute invites applications for the Earl S. Tupper three year postdoctoral fellowship on ecology, anthropology, paleontology, evolution, behavior and physiology of tropical plants or animals. Research should be based at one of the STRI facilities in Panama. Proposals that include comparative research in other tropical countries will be considered. Only one fellowship is awarded annually.
Application should include a detailed research proposal with budget (less than 10 pages): Curriculum vitae, two letters of reference, names and telephone numbers of three additional professional references, and reprints of most important publications.
