ATHLETICS

With pt"oper snpport, this factor in our school life may not only have a beneficial effect on other phases of our work, but may also raise the reputation of the faculty among other faculties. It is therefore highly desirable that athletics should continue to receive the support of the students and all other , who are interested in the progress of Alfred University in order to Regular football practice begins the week after school opens and continues daily until the end of the season.

The new field will be a great help to my training, and you will create a renewed interest in the sport. Management has offered a good schedule for 190' and the outlook looks 'encouraging for a successful season. Baseball candidates are expected to complete light preliminary work - in high school, starting in the second semester.

Positions are awarded to the top men, whether or not they have already played on the 'Varsity' team. All students can compete for places on the nine, in 1901 8 matches were played, in which 59 points were scored and 47 were lost. Training was held throughout the track season and a dual meet was held - the one with Geneseo Normal School at Wayland on June 12th.

Alfred was represented by a team of six men and scored 56 points, while Geneseo scored 59 points with eight men. The Field Day sports during Commencement Week were also in the character of the track team and were "much more successful" than in previous years. The greatest handicap In the development of track athletics at Alfred is the need for a suitable place for training.

The acquisition of new athletic fields has improved the situation, but a good field is essential to the success of this sport, and it is to be hoped that in the near future the new field may be completed by the addition of a running track. track. Lawn Tennis at Alfred is becoming recognized as the premier recreation for those with only occasional leisure moments. The tennis association has two courts at its disposal, and steps are being taken to 'put in a third'.
