Chee Yew Wong is Professor of Supply Chain Management at Leeds University Business School, UK. Logistics and supply chain management have significant sustainability impacts on people, the planet and profits.

Introduction

The next five chapters delve deeper into sustainability issues as they relate to the key functional 'Go' and 'Stop' activities of logistics and SCM. The next two chapters go a step further than production, logistics and supply chain activities.

Finally, Chapter 9 provides an overview of sustainable logistics and SCM strategies, covering how companies can integrate environmental considerations into their overall business strategies, including accounting for the associated costs and benefits. Topics include strategic planning for sustainability, redesigning supply chain networks, sustainable logistics and supply chain performance measurement, and environmental cost trade-offs in logistics systems and supply chains.

Logistics

The nature of logistics

The term "supply chain management" or SCM was introduced by consultants in the 1980s and since then academics have tried to give it theoretical and intellectual structure. Between each node of the supply chain, where the node is a central company, supplier, or buyer, goods are moved by transportation or “Go” activities.

How should we reduce food miles?

The authors of the US study also found that switching to a completely local diet saved about 1,000 miles a year, but that the following dietary offsets were almost as effective in reducing food miles: replacing red meat once a week with chicken, fish or eggs saves. 760 miles a year and eating only vegetables one day a week saves 1,160 miles a year. Shaw et al (2010) concluded that while logistics and supply chain performance measurement is a well-established area of ​​research, green or environmental logistics and supply chain performance measurement is relatively under-researched as in the logistics/supply chain literature as well as the environmental management literature.

Logistics and SCM trends affecting sustainability

The British study concluded that a single indicator based on total food miles is an inadequate indicator of sustainability; the consequences of food transport are complex and involve many trade-offs between different factors. Time compression: the lean versus agile debate

The rise of e-commerce

The ‘one-way flow’ of logistics and SCM

However, the market remains weak due to the ongoing recession and by December 2012 prices had fallen again to around £45-50 per tonne (letsrecycle.com, 2013). However, the parallel increase in logistics and supply chain activities associated with this prosperity has been detrimental to the natural environment in terms of increased resource use, waste and pollution, as well as inefficient movement and storage of goods.

Empowering consumers in the ‘last mile’

However, 31 percent of deliveries fail because consumers are not at home, costing retailers and transporters more than £770 million a year, with the cost of £238 for each failed delivery due to increased administration. The early days of sustainable logistics and SCM

Reverse logistics

In the recovery process, there is uncertainty about the reverse quality or condition, quantity and timing of the product. Techniques for ‘greening’ a warehouse

The approach to applying these guidelines should begin with a company considering why it should develop a sustainable supply chain strategy. These activities must be formed into a sustainable supply chain at the earliest stages of product development.

Concepts of sustainability

Since then there have been a number of events and meetings to raise the profile of the environment and climate change around the world, including, among others, the Brundtland Commission (1987), the initial UN 'Earth Summit' in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, which stated that polluters should pay the cost of pollution, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which set targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the world, and subsequent events such as the New York Millennium Summit 2000, the Johannesburg Summit 2002 , the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Change Conference and the 2012 Rio+20 Conference. Freight transport by trucks and vans in Great Britain is therefore responsible for less than 9 percent of total CO2 emissions. The following box discusses a recent study to determine the economic value of carbon storage and CO2.

Banking on carbon: the economic impact of the natural environment

The study in the report estimates that approximately 87 million tons of carbon are stored in the GGH green belt. Removal of any part of the GGH green belt for other purposes such as industry or housing will release its accumulated or stored carbon into the atmosphere and thus adversely affect the natural environment.

Industry

Food

The 2012 drought destroyed or damaged a significant portion of U.S. agriculture—about 80 percent of agricultural land and 60 percent of farms—more extensive than any drought since the 1950s. Trees planted on land currently used to grow unnecessary excess and wasted food would theoretically offset 100 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.

Social supermarkets to prevent food waste and poverty

The majority of food waste is products in original or broken packaging. It is estimated that between 3 and 8 percent of the value of food products throughout the food supply chain can be preserved for further consumption.

Population and urban growth

For the first time ever, the majority of the world's population lives in a city, and this percentage continues to grow. By 2030, six out of every ten people will live in a city, and by 2050, this percentage will increase to seven out of ten people, or 6.5 billion out of a projected 9.3 billion.

Impact of freight transport

Externalities

Due to the heavy weight of road freight transport vehicles, accidents are worse and the number of fatalities is higher than for cars. The number of accidents varies greatly between countries due to standards of road safety and vehicle maintenance, vehicle age, etc. (Cullinane and Edwards, 2010).

Transport modes

Due to its fuel consumption, it is also relatively expensive, making it a more suitable means of transport for items with a high value density or when a short lead time is important. Due to the high investment, it is used in situations with high volume and predictable demand.

Factors to consider when choosing the transport mode

Accessibility by water or rail determines whether these modes can be considered as options in the choice of transport. The figures from this guideline should be used to assess the environmental impact of a company's logistics activities in a supply chain life cycle assessment.

Strategies to reduce environmental impact of freight transport

Goods transport 73 Possibilities for reducing the environmental burden from transport activities are to reduce the emissions from the current form of transport, to move goods to less polluting forms of transport and the overall reduction of goods transport.

Change of transport mode

The swap body's dimensions must comply with the regulations of both modes and therefore differ from the shipping container. Slightly different from the swap body is a concept for a road-rail trailer where an entire articulated semi-trailer is placed on a modified rail car; the trailer is modified so that the wheels can be retracted to fit on the railcar.

Reduction of freight transport

Some of the emissions from manufacturing will still occur if the product is produced closer to the point of consumption, but the emissions from freight transport can be minimized by sourcing locally. Nearshoring places manufacturing in low-wage countries near or next to the place of consumption.

Reduction of emissions from current mode

If biomass is grown specifically for energy production purposes, it cannot be considered a sustainable energy source due to ethical implications, energy use in the biomass supply chain itself, and extremely low conversion from biomass to eventual electricity ( Leopoldina, 2012). The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has limited the nitrogen content of marine fuel for ships operating in the North Sea and Baltic Sea to 0.1 percent from 2015 onwards.

Infrastructure for hydrogen fuel

Structural improvements of vehicles within the prescribed dimensions can also contribute to the reduction of emissions. This also goes against the goal of reducing vehicle weight.

Alternative jet fuel

As freight transport is difficult to shift to other modes of transport in urban areas, the government can encourage the reduction of freight transport and the use of low-emission vehicles. This measure could reduce traffic in London and encourage the use of cleaner vehicles.

Will autonomous vehicles make transport greener?

One way to reduce the number of delivery runs in urban areas is to use consolidation centers for city center locations. Another aspect to worry about will be the loss of employment opportunities for vehicle drivers.

The environmental impact of warehouses

The roles and functions of warehouses

Just-in-time supply chains avoid warehouses on the customer side of the supply chain. These concepts are highly complex and fragile and require a high level of logistics competence and advanced operations in all parts of the supply chain, including the warehouse nodes.

Important for sustainability issues is therefore whether the warehouse owner has a long-term perspective for a location, which influences the decision to invest in sustainability measures that have a longer payback period (Rushton and Walker, 2007). The decision on the location of a warehouse is more complex than a pure optimization of the transport network at the center of gravity.

Proximity to customers or to sources of supply is a strategic decision that can be an essential part of a warehouse to support a company's market strategy and can even be a requirement in the contract with a single large customer. In the case of online retailers, for example, demand peaks during the Christmas period and the fulfillment center therefore needs a large number of temporary workers.

The overall environmental balance depends on the sum of emissions from all phases of the storage life cycle. Only a complete assessment of the warehouse life cycle can explain the best option for achieving sustainability.

Reduction of environmental impact

In addition to the embedded emissions in the building arising from the construction materials and processes, operational emissions must also be taken into account. Water is consumed for the human needs of employees, but also in cleaning the warehouse, trucks (Gregori and Wimmer, 2011) and in the processing of goods (if value-added activities take place at the warehouse location).

Green energy

When we compare the costs of energy generated on-site and off-site from renewable energy sources, the on-site solutions seem more expensive in many cases. It is often government regulations and incentives that make on-site energy generation a significant option.

Sustainable distribution centre – Alnatura

Even the spades used in the traditional German ceremony that started the construction work were made locally. In addition to the sustainability of the distribution warehouse, the organic products stored in the warehouse are all produced under a sustainability approach, for example using natural fertilizers to avoid the emissions that come from chemical fertilizers that are usually used to grow non-organic foods.

Social dimension of sustainability in warehousing

Heating and cooling of the warehouse area is achieved through the use of an air source heat pump; energy for the office building is generated through the use of a geothermal station. Energy that is bought in from outside to cover times when the energy sources on site are low, is generated from hydropower.

Product design,

This framework can be used to guide transformation in the ways we manage product design, manufacturing and packaging processes. According to the natural resource-based view, companies that are successful in the above stages can finally develop a common corporate vision that is directed towards solving social and environmental problems and achieving sustainable development.

Product design for environmental and sustainable logistics

At this stage, companies can take the opportunity to set new environmental standards in the industry and take it as a sustainable advantage. Design for the environment (eco-design or circular economy design) can be achieved by considering the choice of materials, reducing water and carbon footprints, design for cleaner production, design for sustainable consumption and design for the circular economy (sustainable logistics). .

Selection of materials

Arsenic It is used as an alloy in lead shot and electrical circuits, as a pesticide and as a wood preservative. Chromium It is used as a rust-resistant coating on other metals, a pigment in paint and in wood preservatives and liquids for tanning hides.

Towards an integrated product design for environment

Cleaner production

Cleaner production aims to improve the efficient use of energy and water consumption and raw materials, and to prevent unwanted pollution during the production processes and the delivery of the product and services to customers. By taking the above fundamental principles to a practical level, companies themselves can establish principles of cleaner production.

Towards a cleaner production of textiles

The certification of the raw materials themselves is independently verified by another certification of the production process. To make cleaner production an integrated part of environmental management efforts, it is desirable to make it part of the environmental management system (EMS).

Packaging for the environment

Because plastic waste is relatively difficult to collect and recycle, millions of tons of plastic packaging end up in landfills around the world. In order to make packaging materials lighter, yet strong enough to contain goods (if they are functional), research and technological development are used to strengthen existing packaging materials.

Towards sustainable packaging for grocery supply chains

Another very important development is the use of recyclable packaging and labeling to facilitate recycling. Sainsbury's has been one of the first supermarkets in the UK to take sustainable initiatives to reduce environmental management.

Sustainable consumption and logistics

By using more durable components and energy-enhancing features such as a wide range of programs, sensor technologies and automatic dosing systems, new generations of washing machines can be upgraded to extend their life. The new way of thinking means that washing machines can be upgraded by simply downloading new software.

Regulatory frameworks

Therefore, logistics and supply chain professionals need to understand the regulatory framework related to product design, production and packaging. Some of the previous legislation established during the 1980s mostly focuses on controlled use of these highly dangerous substances and pollution control.

Voluntary regulations

Regulations on packaging and packaging waste

REACH becomes one of the drivers that makes manufacturers and importers start asking their suppliers to disclose the use of chemicals in their production and products. In this regard, many regulations have already been developed to control the use of the most dangerous substances and to track the production and use of chemicals.

The wastewater from malting could be treated to human consumption standards, so that 70 percent of process water could be saved. Procurement frameworks

Buying organizations can try to push for industry-wide standards and regulation to improve the sustainability of bottleneck goods. To keep processes simple and efficient, certifications can be used to achieve the sustainability criteria.

Sustainability labels and certifications

For all items, supply risk may increase as the number of potential suppliers decreases due to those who do not meet sustainability criteria or do not want to contribute to the sustainability agenda. However, these standards are set by the awarding organization and often focus only on a particular aspect rather than the overall sustainability of the product or service.

Fairtrade

Certifications are mainly used for suppliers of non-critical items and leveraged items; nevertheless, they are also found in other supplier categories. In the following paragraphs, we will look at some of the more well-known environmental certifications.

Maritime Stewardship Council

Certifications and labels are also a way to avoid pressure from campaigners, as they provide evidence that the company has met the set standards.

Another criticism is that the comprehensiveness of ISO 14001 standards varies widely from vague generalizations to detailed goals. ISO 14001 also does not cover supply chain and supplier selection; its scope is limited to the accredited unit and in some cases it may ignore the main sources of a product's emissions (Krut and Gleckman, 1998).

Lifecycle assessment

For example, it provides a threshold so that inputs in the inventory analysis can only be considered insignificant if they contribute less than 1 percent of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of a product. In the assessment using the CEPI framework, only 90 percent of greenhouse gas emissions were taken into account.

Charcoal BBQ versus LPG grilling

The production and combustion of LPG emits so much less CO2e than coal that the emissions from the cylinder system are more than offset. By comparison, each charcoal grill emits 6.7 kgC02e, almost half of which comes from burning charcoal.

Reverse logistics and recycling

From a circular economy perspective, the various reverse logistics and recycling systems that enable reuse, renovation, remanufacturing and upcycling are crucial to keeping products, materials and components at the highest utilization and value at all times. Both governments and commercial organizations have increasingly recognized the urgent need for effective reverse logistics and recycling systems to manage our waste and waste.

Circular economy and regulations

For example, if the product is still functional, it can be reused or shared by someone else. Reuse involves using a product or some parts of a used product if it can be shared, refurbished, repaired or remanufactured.
