Overview
Usinga projected
map
outline,studentswillgeneratean
oversizedrenditionoftheSilkRoad
traderoutesfrom Europe
toEast Asia. Studentswillthen apply
elementssuch
aspoliticaland
topographicfeatures, theSilkRoad, products ofthe regions,and
thetravel routesofkey
travelers. Studentsmay
continuallyadd
informationtothemap, and
themap may be used
asa referencetoolthroughouttheteachingunit.Objective. Students will
•locate
and map key
topographicfeaturesalongthe SilkRoad.

and map
the SilkRoad, key
cities,and
tradeproducts.
•generate
and use
amap
key.• gain
an understanding and
appreciation of the terrainalong
the SilkRoad.

Procedure
1. Set
up
asmany overhead
projectors as possible.Each overhead
shouldbe ananged
toprojectthemap image onto butcher paper
orposterboard
thathas been taped
to asmooth
wall surface.Center
theimage so
thatitfillsthe entirepaper,then
tape the transparencyto theoverhead
projector'ssurface to avoidslippage.2.
Have
studentswork
inpairs to tracethe outline of themap and
rivers usingpermanent
markers.Avoid
jostlingtheoverhead
asitisdifficulttorealign the image. Tracing requiresabout 20 minutes per map. Trace
