The
snakewas
foundfreshly killed in afarm
road a few miles west of Alexandria, Va. It is1090mm.
inlength (ofwhich
the tail forms 14.5 mm.),and
in color differs so widely from the bright,handsomely
spottedimmature
specimens hithertoknown
that its identitywas
not at firstsuspected. General coloraboveauniform brown, betweenthe oliveandbistreof Ridgway, faintlylightenedby the irregularappearanceat the surfaceof thecolor between the scales.Two
dark longitudinal stripes on eachside, thefirstonthe fourth
row
of scales(spreadingtothirdandfifth)thesecond on the eighthrow
(spreading to seventh andninth); thesestripescon- tinuous from slightlybehind headtobaseof tail. Incolortheyareso faintly darker than the surrounding parts that in certain lights they are quiteinvisible.They
are, nevertheless,sufficiently distinct tocause a strong resemblance to the color pattern of Coluber quadrivittatus.Bellyolive yellow withthe usual
