GENERAL NOTES.

Note on

the

name

Rhopoclchla.

Rhopocichla

was

firstused

by

Gates in1889

(Fauna

Brit. India, Birds,

I, 159) for an Indian Timeline bird.

Two

years later Dr. Allen

em-

ployed the

same

term (Bull.

Am.

Mus. Nat. Hist., Ill, 199, 1891) for a South

American Ant

Thrush.

As

theuseof the

same name

in

two

families of birds isliable toleadto

some

confusion itis proposedto re- place Dr. Allen's Rhopocichla by Bhopornis (type Myiothera ardesiaca Wied).

The

technical

names

of

two Dogbanes from

the District of

Columbia.

In his recentlypublished

Manual

of theFloraoftheNorthernStates and Canada, Dr. N. L. Britton transfers the

name Apocynum medium

Greene to the

Dogbane

which, in

my

paper onthe species occurringin theDistrict of Columbia,*I describedasA. speciosum. FortheApocy-

num

medium, as there defined, he proposes the

new name

A. milleri.

Beyond

thebrief citation of

noreasonisgivenforthese alter- ations; andaftera carefulexaminationofthefactsI

am

forcedtoregard thechangeasquiteunwarranted.

At

the time of

my

revisionofthe species ProfessorGreene informed

me

that he

had

based the

name medium

ona plantgrowingatawell-

known

locality in Brookland, D.C.

At

thisstationthereis found only onespeciesof

Apocynum,

living

and

which

furnished the material for

my

description. Since the publication of Doctor

Notes.

Britton's 'Manual' I have examined, in

company

with Mr. Chas. L.

Pollard, thespecimeninProfessor Greene'sherbariumstated

by him

to be the type of

Aporynum

medium. It agrees in all respectswiththe plantto

which

Iapplied thename,

and

inno

way

suggests A.speciosum,.

The name

milleri Britton is therefore a

synonym

of

medium

Greene.

The two

speciesinquestionshould standasfollows:

A

fullyadult

specimen

of

Ophibolus rhombomaculatus.

On

October16, 1901, Iobtained a fully adult OpMbolus rhombomacula-

tus, apparently the first to berecorded.

The

snake

was

foundfreshly killed in a

farm

road a few miles west of Alexandria, Va. It is1090

mm.

inlength (of

which

the tail forms 14.5 mm.),

and

in color differs so widely from the bright,

handsomely

spotted

immature

specimens hitherto

known

that its identity

was

not at firstsuspected. General coloraboveauniform brown, betweenthe oliveandbistreof Ridgway, faintlylightenedby the irregularappearanceat the surfaceof thecolor between the scales.

Two

dark longitudinal stripes on eachside, the

firstonthe fourth

row

of scales(spreadingtothirdandfifth)thesecond on the eighth

row

(spreading to seventh andninth); thesestripescon- tinuous from slightlybehind headtobaseof tail. Incolortheyareso faintly darker than the surrounding parts that in certain lights they are quiteinvisible.

They

are, nevertheless, sufficiently distinct tocause a strong resemblance to the color pattern of Coluber quadrivittatus.

Bellyolive yellow withthe usual

dusky

blotches.

The

oliveyellowex- tends over the back on the skin between thescales. Lips andentire space between rami pearly gray, thickly sprinkled with

brown

dots.

At

first sight the back appears to be quite

unmarked,

except forthe longitudinal stripes, but on close inspection in a veryfavorable light faint traces of the rhombicspots

may

be detected, particularlyonthe tail

and

posteriorhalfofbody.
