1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents some topics related to the introduction of the
research. They are the background of the study, research problem, objective of the study, significance of the study, and scope and limitation of the study.
1.1 Background of the Study
Language is a very important tool in language communication and turns to be the most important way of communication between people worldwide. As an English student, according to Hamid (2014), English serves as the second language after mother tongue, which is commonly used in both formal and informal activities. The use of language as an oral communication tool is often found in daily communication.
As a matter of importance to communication, each country has its own national language. There are so many kinds of languages in the world, and English is one of the most used foreign languages in the world. English is one of the languages used as an international language in the world. As an international language, it is very important to learn English to communicate with other people in other countries. Subiyanti (1995) stated that there are many languages spoken in the world and English is considered to be one of the international languages.
2
Nowadays, English has been taught in schools throughout the world, both as a foreign language and a second language. In Indonesia, English is an international language that is utilized after the first language, and English is a second language in various countries such as in Singapore, Malaysia, Pakistan, Sweden, Netherlands.
According to Faliyanti (2017) that English is very important because all countries are use it to communicate each other. This proves that language is essential for
interacting with others.
Listening, speaking, reading, and writing are the four skills that must be acquired when studying English. In addition, the students also must know the language components in learning English, such as grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, and pronunciation. Pronunciation is how the students articulate the sound of word that it also includes attention to the sounds of language and aspects of speech beyond the level of the individual sound, like intonation, stress, rhythm, correctly. According to Dewi et al. (2020) that there are four language skills that students need to learn in English, such as listening, reading, speaking, and writing. In addition, English also has components such as pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc.
Teaching pronunciation is a key aspect of foreign language instruction. Before students can speak, they must first master the skill of pronunciation. Andianto (2013) stated that pronunciation is a structured sound, it is not the same as writing. This is the languages spoken form, and it is a way of pronouncing the sound of a language.
Pronunciation is the art of appropriately pronouncing vowels and consonants. Maybe some people have good grammar understanding and good writing skills. However,
3
people will judge their English skills from speaking. If someone can speak well, with good and precise pronunciation, then someone will be assessed as being able to speak English well. Because most of a person’s assessment lies in how the ability to speak with good pronunciation.
Based on the afore-mentioned, it motivated the researcher to conduct an observation at SMAN 5 Malang since there were problems related to pronunciation, such as some students had good grammar skills but encountered difficulty in
pronouncing the words correctly.
Besides the emergence of the problems that existed at the school, it turns out that there is an interesting learning method used by the teacher and it is hoped that it can improve students’ pronunciation, namely learning by listening to the song.
According to Andianto (2013) that song is one of the very useful ways of instructional learning process because teachers and students find singing song
entertaining and relaxing. The reason why the listening song is expected to be able to influence learning English is that majority of English songs consist of native
speakers’ voices that students will learn for their pronunciation. Therefore, it has the potential to help students improve their speaking skills. In learning English, students must master several skills, and the basic skill is listening. Ge (2009) stated that listening is a fundamental skill in learning English, so students must listen first before moving on to the next skill.
In light of the issues and some of the viewpoints expressed above, it seems that learning by using songs can effect the students’ pronunciation, and also learning to
4
the listening song seems to have a positive effect on students’ ability to pronounce words correctly. As a result, a researcher would like to know more about a correlation of the topic between students who listen to English songs and their ability to
pronounce English words at SMAN 5 Malang, particularly in the eleventh-grade students.
1.2 Research Problem
Based on the background of the study, the problem of this research is as follow:
is there any correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English word at SMAN 5 Malang in the eleventh-grade students?
1.3 Objective of the Study
The aforementioned research aims to see if there is any correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words at SMAN 5 Malang eleventh grade students.
1.4 Significance of the Study
The researcher would like to collect empirical data on the correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words.
The researcher hopes that the outcome will provide the following benefits:
5 1. Theoretical advantages
a. The study result may be utilized to demonstrate a correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words.
b. The outcome can indicate the correlation for the teacher between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words.
2. Practically advantages
a. For the benefit of the students
This study hypothesized that listening to English songs will improve students’ ability to pronounce words more effectively than before.
b. For the educator
Based on the students listening to songs in English, the teacher will have new references on students' ability to pronounce English words.
c. For the benefit of the school
To improve students’ pronunciation, the researcher will advise the usage of the school by listening to English songs.
6 1.5 Scope and Limitation of Study
The scope of this research is focused on the students listening to English songs and their pronunciation ability at eleventh-grade students of SMAN 5 Malang. The researcher limited the problem mainly for exploring the correlation between students listening to English songs and students’ ability to pronounce English words. Only eleventh-grade students were utilized as a sample in the study of the correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
To minimize misunderstandings, the definitions of crucial phrases are supplied.
Some terms used in this research needed to be defined:
Correlation, a statistical technique for determining the correlation between two or more quantitative variables. The researcher wants to determine if there is a
correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words.
The pupils can appreciate the song My Love by Westlife while listening to English tunes. Students can learn a variety of topics through the songs, like real love, new vocabulary, and how to pronounce them. It suggested that the researcher would like to know how to appropriately and correctly pronounce the word when students listening to songs in English.
7
Pronunciation is one part of the English language acquisition process. It is also one of the parts of English to communicate with others, even there are many
differences between the symbol and its sounds. It means that the researcher wants to know how the students pronounce the word from the lyric of the song.
36 CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
The researcher summarizes the study’s findings in this chapter and offers recommendations based on research performed with SMA Negeri 5 Malang eleventh-grade students.
5.1 Conclusion
Based on the data and finding above, the problem of the study could be summarized. Since the significant value, the research concluded no correlation between students listening to songs in English and their ability to pronounce English words (0.168) was higher than 0.05.
Students that are used to listening to songs in English and enjoy listening to songs in English do not necessarily have good pronunciation. And students who are not used to listening to English songs and who don’t like English songs, do not necessarily have bad pronunciation. Because good pronunciation is not only by listening to songs in English but also by other factors.
Finally, it is possible to assert that there is no correlation between listening to songs in English and their pronunciation ability. Listening to English songs isn’t the only approach to improve pronunciation; there are other options.
37 5.2 Suggestions
The researcher would like to give some suggestions that can be considered as follows:
1. English teachers are supposed to motivate their students to improve their listening and English skills, as well as to get them acclimated to imitating native speakers and to improve their pronunciation ability.
2. It is recommended that students not only listen to English songs, but also explore themselves to use other media to support them in learning English pronunciation, the students should build confidence to practice pronunciation ability, and the students should be more creative and have the motivation to learn their pronunciation ability.
3. The next researcher focused on the relationship between listening to songs in English and the ability to pronounce English words correctly. It is therefore advised that the association between pronouncing ability and other abilities be investigated for the next investigation.
