extensively, watching extensively, looking for fascinating topics, a lot of practicing speaking, and taking small notes.
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
In this study, the researcher explains some points. They are background of the study, statement of the problems, research objectives, hypothesis, significance of the study, scope and limitation of the study, and the definition of key terms.
1.1 Background of the Study
Reading, listening, writing, and speaking are four skills that must be mastered and understood by students when learning English. One of the most important skills to develop and master when learning English is speaking ability. Speaking is the most critical and important of the four language skills, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This is essential for good communication (Ur, 1996) .
However, in Indonesia, speaking English remains a problem and is sometimes hardly used in the social environment of students in the English classroom. The classroom environment is crucial to the teaching and learning process. According to Hannah (2013), the classroom is a place where students can develop some of the required and important skills for learning.
The classroom environment is where the teaching and learning process takes place. The communication between teacher and pupils, students with peers, equipment, and classroom conditions all contribute to the classroom environment. According to
Zandvliet & Fraser (2004), the three aspects of assessing the classroom environment are the physical, psychological, and social framework. The social classroom
environment is one of the factors that help English students communicate in English in their daily lives.
However, at the beginning of 2020,several nations throughout the world, including Indonesia, suffered challenges that disrupted human operations and had a significant influence on all sectors of life, as a result of the Covid-19 virus. The
spread of coronavirus (covid-19) has had an impact on many aspects of global society, including the Indonesian people and academic community. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become increasingly difficult to get students to speak English properly in the classroom.
The effects of the severe COVID-19 pandemic prompted the switch to online learning mode. Because, as the Covid 19 pandemic increases students must attend online daily lessons. The Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbud) has released Circular Letter No. 15 of 2020, which contains guidelines for organizing learning from home in the Situation of Covid-19 spread. The aim of adopting learning from home, according to this circular, is to ensuring that students' rights are respected.
Protect residents of education units from the bad impacts of Covid-19 (KEMENDIKBUD, 2020).
Schools and universities have been shuttered indefinitely because of the COVID- 19 pandemic. This transforms the traditional classroom learning approach into online
learning. Teachers attempt to involve online learning media into their lessons despite knowing little about how their students utilize online learning media to develop their speaking abilities. Because students are at the core of the learning process, teachers need to understand their perspectives of online learning in order to assist those constructing instructional activities that are relevant to improve their speaking abilities.
Therefore, based on the background of this research, the researcher tried to investigate students' perceptions on EFL students’ in online learning towards speaking ability by students of the English Education Department of UNISMA. So that it can be seen clearly what it is and how it helps teachers to find out students' perceptions of the difficulties faced by students.
1.2 Research Problems
Based on the background of the research stated above, the research problem is formulated as follows:
1. What are EFL students’ perceptions on online learning towards their speaking ability?
2. What are the problems faced by EFL students while interacting in online classes?
3. What strategies are used by EFL students to improve their speaking ability during online learning?
1.3 Objective of the Study
Based on the background of the study and the research problems above, there are three objectives of this study:
1. To investigate students’ perceptions on EFL students online learning towards their speaking ability.
2. To investigate the problems faced by EFL students while interacting in online classes using English for speaking.
3. To investigate the strategies used by EFL students to improve their speaking ability during online learning.
1.4 Significance of the Study
To make sure that this study is significant, the researcher hopes that it is useful both theoretically and practically. Theoretically, this study is expected to verify, confirm, or enrich the literature on learning to speak English with relevant previous studies on EFL students’ perception in online learning towards speaking ability.
Practically, this study will be useful to students in better developing their speaking ability. This study will help teachers better understand their students’ problems in interacting on online learning. The teachers can also use this study to encourage the students’ speaking abilities to be better.
1.5 Scope and Limitation of the Study
This study focuses on the perception and experience of EFL students in online learning towards their speaking abilities during the covid 19 pandemic. The limitation
of this study is that researcher cannot make direct observations due to the situation and condition of research activities carried out during the pandemic. Further, the instruments utilized in this study are less valid to provide specific answers to the research problems, and the subjects or participants are less accurate, because the selection of student semesters is not accordance with the objectives of this study.
1.6 Definition of the Key terms 1. Perception
Perceptions are the opinion, overview, and understanding given by the EFL students on online learning towards speaking ability.
2. Online learning
Online learning is a method of education in which students learn virtually.
3. Speaking ability
Speaking ability is the ability to improve speech that is used to make words that can be understood, so that they can be understood by the interlocutor when
communicating and interacting in the classroom and outside the classroom with using English Language.
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
This chapter presents the conclusion and the suggestion of research based on the findings and the discussions. The suggestions are addressed to the students, English speaking lecturer, and the future researcher.
5.1 Conclusion
This study was created according to the category of the research questions and, based on the findings.First, with the holding of online learning in this pandemic era, it makes EFL students have to interact online with each other by speaking English during online learning, which makes EFL students admit that they have difficulty interacting through online learning. This is indicated by the first finding that the majority of EFL students chose to disagree with the choices in each question of the questionnaire and the results of the interview that the students have many problems with their interactions using English to speak during online learning.
Second, the problems faced by EFL students while interacting in online classes using English for speaking during online learning, are linguistic elements and unstable networks.Third, the strategies are used by EFL students to improve their speaking ability during online learning, are obtaining more input like as reading and listening, practicing speaking, and taking tiny notes were all strategies for improve their speaking. So that students could handle their problems in speaking activities by using these strategies.
5.2 Suggestions
Finnaly, based on the results, this suggestions are suggested for EFL students, English lecturers, and future researchers.
5.2.1 For EFL Students
There are several suggestions for the students. First, they should constantly practice actively and extensively with their peers. Second, read more English novels with light and entertaining storie, write unfamiliar vocabulary and research its meaning, listen to more English music, and watch English podcasts on YouTube or other media platforms. Third, don't be scared to make mistakes; only practice and ask a friend to fix your English. Finally, remind yourself that speaking English is
extremely essential in today's world.
5.2.2 For English Lecturer
The lecturers is suggested to to be able to use a more attractive media platform for students to use so that they can more interactive and be active in online classes. Could assist and encourage students to find a solution to challenges encountered during online learning in order to enhance their speaking abilities.
5.2.3For Future Researcher
The researcher realizes all the limitations and shortcomings of the researcher in conducting this research. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic which has changed face-to- face learning to online learning, it is difficult to meet face-to-face with participants, so researchers only use questionnaires via Google forms and conduct online
interviews to collect data, instruments that still lack specific answers in this study,
and the subject or participant of this research which is less accurate, because the semester students do not match the title of this research. For future researchers, researchers suggest using instruments that can answer specifically and in detail for the research to be carried out and subjects or participants for data collection, using the right student semester according to the title of the research to be carried out and more EFL students to verify the results clear and detailed.
