But today, in light of the death of one who had such abundant opportunities to be of use to the world, it seems more like the triumphant statement of someone who knew the meaning of life. The Ormal College of the American Gymnastic Union has been in existence for many years and is under the reliable leadership of its President, Dr. He is an example of the type of individual we would all like to be.

To the members of the basketball team, he is "coach" who has taught them many of the finer points of the game. His external research and probing deeper and deeper into the psychology of the human race has enabled him to give his students a greater knowledge of human nature and its needs.

The other interesting thing about the College is that it has never abandoned, even in a small way, its idea that the primary purpose of physical education is to develop a healthy, strong body which will enable its possessors to enjoy his physical life, and to do with greater efficiency and with joy to himself any intellectual or spiritual task that may be his. There must have been times when the fledgling college was moved from one town to another, where more students and more money would have been welcome; but never for the sake of these has it wavered in its principle. For good reasons, Turnerbund has chosen to change the way it supports the college and set up a maintenance fund for that purpose.

Professor Babbitt of Harvard said that the small college, adequately endowed, is the hope of any educational ideal. The friends of the Normal College and the former pupils, to whom the school has given an interesting livelihood, dear friendships and an honorable professional standing, will surely respond to the call. Since reading the book review, I have often thought of our school, not in terms of our simple housing and modest equipment, not even in terms of the beautiful work that was done, but as an inspiring procession that spanned almost five seventy years long, of "strong hearts with an idea." It seems only a just reward for these brave spirits that there should be a reasonable financial security for the school and its sound system of physical education which they founded and supported.

Two of her previous pledges, Elizabeth Gutermuth and Martha Washburn, were initiated and are now enjoying the privileges of active members. After working diligently at Ru h Books to qualify girls to join an organization, our efforts were well rewarded when four girls accepted our offer. The year's program included a swimming party and a theater party for the whole school.

CALENDAR

Although it was fun play- ing all the games, going for walks, and dancing to Rosalie's playing, the best time of all was joining the long line for f-o-o-d. Of course some wenl thru the line three, four or even five times; .. but then the appetites at Normal College never were small. The main attraction of the eve- ning was the excellent service rendered by the very capable pin- girl.

The team of Ricigliano and Steele caused as much of a sensation as Diestel and W eissmueller the year before. Imagine all the normal college huskies splashing around at the same time - the pool almost overflowed. Of course, the Frosh were entertained with their nursery rhymes, and the upperclassmen did their best to look dignified – ( Oh, well, it was Halloween and masks were allowed.).

How they got through that basketball game on skates with nothing more than "damaged pride" is a wonder to everyone. 24-Thanksgiving - Everyone came out for the Tri-Brotherhood Dance - they needed some practice to finish the big Thanksgiving Dinner and besides it was a great opportunity to meet everyone who came back for Homecoming . Someone must have been practicing hard - It must have been the Sophs, as they finished on top.

24-Corrigan Hop-Nothing but the best for the gentleman (even if the girls were broke for a week) The vegetable corrigans were very impressive and healthy too ~ with a little salt. 25-Basketball game - The whole school cheered and cheered; the sideline coaches gave the best advice; the team played hard and fast - but alas - we lost to Taylor.

BROSIUS LIFE

Then there are Altoona flashers Bink and Ches, who do well at the pitching ball (Bink follows Ches around to set his shoulder back when he throws extra hard). Over at the shot we find Brogan putting the 16 lb. Now that trail period is over, we're all ready for a nice cool (or should I say cold?) dip in the lake. There's nothing like a swim in Lake Elkhart on a crisp June morning.

This rest period is over far too soon, and afternoon classes continue as normal. Everyone must have been extra thirsty when beer di appeared in the first half hour. When it was the girls' turn to entertain, they did their best to copy a radio show.

Quiz, Buck enny and his vlayers and Walter Winchell with all the gossip of the camp. Hester for you) who guides Wild Nell from the plain (Vi for you) to his tragic end. One of the most fun evenings was Saturday evening when the freshmen had a dance in Jahn Hall.

Although it was not an evening program, who can ever forget that exciting trip to the swamps. Lehsten's me-fortune was the only feature that prevented the day from being a complete success. but then there is no room for a car in the marshes. All the acts were unique, but no one will be. never forget Brogan and Goldenberg doing their hand at handling balancing act.

BASKE TBALL

As the school year enters its final stages and as the "GIMNAST" goes to press, the varsity baseball team looks forward to a successful season. This year's team will be made up largely of last year's players along with several promising Freshmen. The pitching department is well bolstered with Miklas, Binkley, Lando and Guenther, while Schlaplokl appears to be the leading candidate for the catcher's job.

The infield will consist of veterans including Frazer, Bowker, Butler, Lehsten and Taperman. The schedule has not been released yet, but with the team following Coach Schreiber's course and practicing a lot, we may find the Phy Eds playing .500 baseball. They were matched against the best pugilists in the city and county, and two of the boys won the championships in their respective weight classes, while several of the others struggled in the semi-finals.

Leibinger took top honors in the 147-pound novice division, while Joe Ciesielski was second in the 175-pound novice division. The team this year was made up mostly of sophomores and freshmen; so next year Ooach Treichler will have an experienced team ready to eagerly await the A's.

WRES TLING

INTRAMURAL S

All three guns were received by the junior class under the able guidance of Mr. Some of the students held exhibitions with all three weapons, which everyone enjoyed. The team is anxious to get some fencing done outside and negotiations are now underway for a meeting with the Indianapolis Fencing Club after spring break.

During the month of March, a single elimination tournament was held in Epee in the Junior Class, which was won by Don Chestney and runner-up Ralph Sigel. A schedule for a Saber tournament is currently being worked on, and the guys are looking forward to it because it is their weapon of choice. The current team is small, but next year it will become bigger when the second year students join us.

GIRLS INTRA MURALS

Although the frosh lacked sophomore experience, the former team rallied to a hard-fought victory, leaving the sophe far behind in third place. The junior class gained extra points when the results showed that Mildred Muench was runner-up, leaving Ruth Baecher, a junior, in third place. Throughout the entire internal program, especially junior girls dominated the scoring.

Through their efforts and accomplishments, they have helped the junior class maintain its lead in intramural scoring. The junior name has been inscribed on the intramural trophy for the past two years and it is their hope to gain the honor again this year.

MEN'S INTRA MURALS

MIKLAS '40

The home of the "Galloping Gaels" whose football records were sensational year after year, its cheap academic endeavors and enormous gate receipts could not prevent it from being auctioned off to a mortgagee committee. Professional football can do to college football what professional baseball did to college baseball. Our students of the Normal College, and prospective teachers of physical education should be especially interested.

How can we, as future leaders in various sports, influence a more even distribution of sports activity among the students of our educational institutions. The success of our teams depends on the individual initiative of each student.
