Research Design

In the learning speech, the teacher recognizes several aspects that influence the students' speech learning process. Finally, it can be concluded that the teacher should establish a relaxed environment in the classroom by following the instructions for using story completion technique.

Phenomenology also emphasizes subjectivity with the aim of maximizing the depth of the information gathered. Based on the previous statement, this research aims to investigate how the story completion technique can build students' speaking skills by considering the teaching objectives, the material provided, the steps used and the evaluation of learning for 8th grade students in SMPN 1 Kunir.

Research Subject

Data Collection Technique

In this study, the researcher chose a non-participant observer because the researcher only focused on class observations, field notes and taking photographs during observation activities. In observation activities, the researcher made observations when the teacher entered the class, starting with greetings, prayer, checking student attendance and giving perceptions about the material to be explained. Afterwards, the researcher observed how the teacher applied the story completion technique, which focused on students' speaking skills, such as forming groups, discussion sessions between groups, to presentations for each group.

Through this observation process, the researcher knows the learning objectives in teaching speaking skills, the material taught by the teacher, the steps related to the story completion technique, and the evaluation given directly to the students. In the current study, the researcher used in-depth interviews in the form of semi-structured interviews. In this study, researchers used in-depth interviews in the form of semi-structured interviews.

The researcher uses a semi-structured interview because the researcher wants to distribute questions without disturbing the students' comfort. In addition, in-depth interviews were conducted with English teachers and eighth grade students at SMPN 1 Kunir. In this research, the researcher used lesson plan as document review because the researcher wants to ascertain the data collected about whether the teaching objectives, the material taught, the learning steps applied and the assessment given to students follow the lesson plan which by the teacher so that the data obtained by the researcher can be stated as data valid.

Data Analysis

Based on the previous statement, in the current study, the researcher analyzed the lesson plan as a document review. Lesson plan with basic competencies, core competencies, learning objectives, learning materials, learning media, learning techniques, learning activities and assessment. Miles, Huberman, and Saldana emphasize interactive models, including data condensation, data representation, and inference drawing.53.

The first step is data condensation, the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting, and transforming data that emerges in the body of written field notes, interview transcripts, and documents. In this step, the researcher collected data from observation and interviews about the process of speaking during the implementation of the story completion technique. The data is then reduced, summarized and classified into different categories based on the formulation of the topic under investigation.

The second step, data display can be defined as an organized and compressed collection of information data that allows to conclude. Based on the previous statement, data will be presented in narrative form to incorporate organized information logically and comprehensibly. Thus, with the reduced and presented data, researchers will draw conclusions supported by concrete evidence during the data collection.

Validity of Data

Thus, in this research, the researcher used triangulation in two ways: source triangulation and technical triangulation as follows;. For example, the researcher conducted interviews related to the material taught in the teaching of speaking using the story completion technique. The teacher said that the material is a narrative text with the theme of personal experience, which consists of social functions, text structure and linguistic features.

Technical triangulation means that the researcher checks the data obtained from the same source through different techniques to test its credibility. As an example, after the researcher obtained interview conclusions from the English teacher and students regarding the material taught in teaching through the story completion technique, the researcher made observations by paying attention to the teacher explaining the material in class . The researcher observed that the teacher explained the narrative text material from personal experience, including text structure, social function and language features.

To strengthen the results of the interviews and observations, the researcher analyzed the lesson plan that the teacher had made. The researcher sees in point D that the written material is personal retelling text, including social functions, text structure and linguistic features. Therefore, the data has been confirmed genuine by triangulation, giving researchers confidence in the validity of the data.

Research Procedure

In this phase, the researcher begins a field assessment to define the problems or focus of the research. Before going to the research site, the researcher will create a field design, choose a research field, obtain licenses and prepare letters such as observation letters, research letters, etc. Then the researcher will investigate and evaluate the research site, while also choosing and using the research site . the knowledge.

In addition, the researcher also prepares the research equipment, including paper, notebooks, stationery, mobile phone, voice recorders and other things. Researcher collects data depending on research focus and research objectives through observation, interviews and document analysis. The researcher processes the research data by collecting and applying the collected data and information to this research study, especially by describing the learning process, specifically by using the technique of story completion in speaking teaching.

After certain data is collected, all collected data will be double checked and traced back to the source. The confidentiality stated in this study is more personal, which means that the researcher will only know the personal problems of the respondents reported by this research. After the completion of the three stages, the overall results were reviewed and systematically organized until they were written in the form of a thesis, which began with an introduction, a literature review, a research method, a presentation of the research results, and a conclusion.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Research Findings

It is clear from the teacher's statement that the subject is taught according to the curriculum for the eighth grade of the second semester. From the student's statement, it is clear that the teacher explained the narrative text with the theme of personal experience. In the observational activities, the researcher observed that the teacher was teaching the material on text narration with the theme of personal experience.

Therefore, the teacher instructs the students to search the Internet for information related to the narration of the text on the topic of personal experience. The teacher's statement shows that the teacher divides the learning phase into three parts. Then the teacher instructs the students to observe the examples of text narration in their books.

In addition, it was strengthened by the lesson plan in point F for the narration of the textual material on the topic of personal experiences that contained the step of teaching speaking skills through the technique of completing the story were: 73 a) the teacher instructs the students to form groups , b) each group does a simple personal recount, c) each group presents the results of the discussion in front of the class with confidence, and d) students receive feedback from the teacher on the results of their discussions. Seen from the teacher's statement, it appears that the teacher gives an assessment at the end of the lesson. Afterwards, the teacher also conducts practical evaluations, namely the presentation of the results of group work in front of the class.

Discussion

Therefore, the researcher hopes that using the technique of completing the stories can be an alternative to teaching speaking to get a new circumstance in the learning and teaching process. The use of story completion in teaching speaking to the eleventh grade students of Sman 2 Tenggarong Seberang in the academic year. The implementation of the technique of teaching speaking through story completion in the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kunir – Lumajang in the academic year 2022-2023.
