The children of Israel remained faithful to the Lord God throughout the days of Joshua and throughout the days of the elders who lived after Joshua. These people had seen all the miracles and great works that God had done for the Israelites. This is the history of the judges of Israel – the time period between the death of Joshua and the establishment of the United Kingdom under Saul, David and Solomon.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Othniel and he fought against the king defeating him (Judges 3:7-11). When Sisera brought his army to the valley for battle, his chariots got stuck in the flooded plain, "...the Kishon River swept them away" (Judg 5:21). Again the children of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, who delivered them into the hand of the Midianites.

The angel asked Gideon to save Israel from Midian and assured him that the Lord would be with him (Judges 6:11-24). When the children of Israel did evil, into whose hand the Lord gave them. When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, what did the angel tell him?

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon and he blew a trumpet and gave the call to arms.

J EPHTHAH

JEPHTHAH'S MISSION

Jephthah said that the Lord God gave Sihon and his people over to Israel, who defeated them, so that Israel took possession of the whole land.

JEPHTHAH'S DAUGHTER

Or did Jephthah dedicate his daughter to the service of the Lord for the Lord. Or did Jephthah devote his daughter to the service of the Lord for the rest of her life. How can Jephthah be called faithful if he did something that is an abomination to the Lord?

When Jephthah made his vow, he said, “…whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me…will surely be from the Lord…”. Although a promise once made to the Lord must be kept, Old Testament law provided for and permitted the fulfillment of certain vows. A person dedicated to the Lord by a vow could be redeemed by paying silver to the priest (Lev. 27:1-8).

But when devotion was added to the vow, the devoted person was holy to the Lord and could not be redeemed (Lev. 27:28). It is therefore possible that Jephthah fulfilled his promise, not by offering his daughter to God as a burnt offering, but by devoting her to God's service, unable to marry and bear children for the rest of her life. In those days a woman who was unable to bear children was considered a reproach, and since Jephthah had no children other than his daughter, he was unable to pass on his name and family heritage if she remained childless.

In order for Jephthah to fulfill his promise in this way, both he and his daughter were required to offer a great sacrifice, not a bleeding burnt offering, but a living spiritual sacrifice (Ex 38:8; I Sam 2:22) ). The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah when he went into battle and made his vow (Judg 11:29). The daughters of Israel commemorate Jephthah's daughter there (the mountains) for four days each year (Judg 11:40).

A burnt offering could only be offered on the altar at the tabernacle by a Levitical priest (Lev. Jephthah had just defeated the Ammonites, who were guilty of the abomination of human sacrifice (1 Kings 11:7; Lev. 20:1-5). ).

SAMSON'S RIDDLE

If the guests could declare it within the seven days after the feast, he would give them thirty linen garments and thirty changing garments. If they could not solve the riddle during that time, they were to give Samson the thirty garments and thirty changes of clothing (Judg 14:12-13). On the seventh day, the guests still had not answered the riddle, so they threatened Samson's wife, who accused Samson of hating, not loving, her.

Samson said to the men, "If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have discovered my riddle." The Spirit of the Lord came upon Samson, and he went to Ashkelon, a Philistine city, and put to death taking their clothes and giving them to those who interpreted the riddle; Then he went home angry. Her father said he thought Samson hated his daughter, so he visited his wife.

Her father said that he thought Samson hated his daughter, so he gave her to Samson's companion. The Philistines then threatened to attack a city in Judah if the men of that city did not hand Samson over to them. When the men of Judah as the men of that city did not deliver Samson to them.

When Judah's men confronted Samson, he said he would surrender to them if they did not kill him.

Each time the Philistines lay in wait, and the first three times Delilah did as Samson told her.

NAOMI AND RUTH

Elimelech, his wife Naomi, and their two sons left Bethlehem and moved to Moab because he was there: (Ruth 1:1-2). After ten years both sons also died and Naomi returned to Bethlehem accompanied: (Ruth 1:22).

RUTH AND BOAZ

If the close relative did not want to fulfill the duty of being a close relative (marrying Ruth), then he (Boaz) would fulfill the duty. Boaz asked this close relative of Naomi if he would buy Naomi's land and marry Ruth. The man gave up his right of redemption to Boaz, and to confirm their agreement, as was customary in redemption and exchange, the man took off his and gave it to Boaz.

THE BIRTH OF SAMUEL

When Elkanah and his household next went to offer the annual sacrifice, Hannah told her husband when she would go: (I Sam. 1:21-22). When Hannah weaned Samuel, she took him to the house of the Lord to Eli and took him with her (I Sam. 1:24). Hannah told Eli that she was the woman who prayed to the Lord for a child, and He granted her request; therefore she lent (granted) him to the Lord: (I Sam. 1:26-28).

I SRAEL W ANTS A K ING

THE PEOPLE DEMAND A KING

Many years later when Israel became very wicked and idolatrous, God spoke a prophecy to the people through the prophet Hosea: (Hos. 13:11). Exalt the Lord our God, and worship before his footstool; for He is holy.

SAMUEL ANOINTS SAUL AS KING

As Saul and his servant went up to the city, he came out to meet them. Samuel gave a feast, and Saul and his servant sat in the place of honor among about thirty guests. The next day, as Saul and his servant were leaving the city, Samuel told Saul to ask his servant to go before them.

When the two of them were alone, Samuel then poured oil on Saul's head and said that the Lord had anointed him (Saul) to be that. Later, Samuel called the people together in Mizpah and told them that they had rejected the Lord by asking for a king. Nevertheless, the Lord would grant their request, and somehow the choice of the king was made among the tribes and families.

When Samuel told the people that Saul was the man the Lord had chosen, what did the people shout? The Ammonites, ancient enemies of Israel, laid siege to the city of Jabesh Gilead, east of the Jordan River. When the men of the city asked the city of Jabesh Gilead, east of the Jordan River.

When the men of the city asked for a confederation, the leader of the Ammonites threatened to put out the right eyes of all the men who submitted. The men of Jabesh then asked for a seven-day truce and sent word to all Israel and Saul. The messengers were sent back to Jabesh to tell the people that they would be delivered tomorrow.

The next day, Saul divided his army into three companies and attacked at dawn, defeating the Ammonites until the heat of the day. Some Israelites wanted to kill the men who had mocked Saul, but Saul said that no one should be put to death because the Lord had wrought a great deliverance (salvation) that day. Samuel then told the people to go to Gilgal, and there they would renew the kingdom.
