The types of nursing degrees include diploma, an associate degree in nursing (ADN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing (Ph.D., DNP, DNS) (. (Fig . 4.5) and have gradually declined in number, with only a handful remaining in the United States. The difference lies in the training behind the license, the opportunity for advancement and, in some cases, the salary.
Nursing school schedules usually include long days in the hospital in addition to classes and labs on campus. A DNP is a clinical doctorate and is the highest level of training in clinical nursing and a rapidly growing field as evidenced by a significant increase in the number of programs across the US (.Fig. 4.9). According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), there are more than 270,000 NPs in the US.
Not all NPs practice independently, and nurse practitioners should understand the range of training in the state in which they practice (American Nurses Association 2020b; National Councils of State Boards of Nursing. 2019). NNPs specialize in the care of newborn babies with acute illnesses who require postnatal care in neonatal intensive care units, emergency rooms, delivery rooms or specialist clinics. They write prescriptions, interpret electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring, evaluate patient responses to medications, and have other advanced skills used in the care of acutely ill patients.
