[A. Hart] Hi. I’m Amanda Hart, your host for the April 15th edition of IUPUI’s The Spot.
IUPUI is one of the most outstanding urban research universities in the United States. From
nanotechnology to biomedical engineering and the impact of homelessness, our research breakthroughs address needs across the globe. In celebration of IUPUI's state‐of‐the‐art research, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research invites you to their open house during IUPUI's Research Day, beginning at 9am on Friday, April 24th. The Vice Chancellor for Research has more details.
[K. Varahramyan] Research Day is IUPUI’s open house celebration of its research enterprise, and it provides an opportunity for our campus as well as the outside community to come together and gain a better understanding as far as the wide range of research efforts and also scholarly activities that we have going on on our campus.
Again, Research Day is open to faculty, staff, and students from IUPUI as well as the outside community consisting of people from our immediate region as well as people from industry, government, other universities. Everybody is welcome.
There is no cost associated with Research Day. All the participants are simply welcome to join us for this celebration of the research enterprise on the IUPUI campus.
[A. Hart] In conjunction with IUPUI’s 40th Anniversary, The Spirit of Philanthropy Luncheon and Awards Ceremony will recognize individuals and corporations for their contributions and donations. The
ceremony will be on Wednesday, April 22nd, from 11:30am to 1:30pm. More details can be found under the calendar tab at forty.iupui.edu.
Interested in a job in accounting, communication, technology or others? The 19th annual Indiana Collegiate Career Fair will be Wednesday, April 22nd from 10am to 3pm in Crowne Plaza at Historic Union Station. Over 80 employers are expected. Admission is free with professional dress required. For more information visit careerfairs.iupui.edu.
The Hermano a Hermano Program will be traveling to the Dominican Republic to give school supplies to its young children. Before they leave, they are asking for your support during their supply drive. We talked to Juhanna Rogers about the supply drive and the Hermano a Hermano Program.
[J. Rogers] The Hermano a Hermano Project is a service‐learning program that takes IUPUI and IU students to the Dominican Republic for ten days. During the course of the ten days, students learn about Dominican culture and history. We also cover topics such as Afro‐Dominican, Dominican‐Haitian conflict and African American history within the Dominican Republic. The program was designed to engage more students of color in international programs and international service‐learning.
Our next trip, our 3rd annual trip, actually, will be May 17th through May 29th, 2009. In the next month or so, 17 Indiana University – Purdue University students will be traveling to the Dominican Republic as a part of this program.
As part of the program we do service learning projects in three different Dominican communities. One is in a rural community helping Dominican schools and beautification projects, building libraries, painting, updating classrooms. We also do a community service project in what are called Haitian bates with Haitian refugees that are living in the Dominican Republic. If you would like more information you can contact myself directly at junroger@iupui.edu.
