This study aims to determine the organization, quality and appropriateness of learning materials and experiences that students get from an English textbook titled "Work in Progress" for class X. The researcher used McDonough and Shaw's theory and criteria to help the researcher analyze content in English text. The results of this study show that the English text "Work in Progress" for grade X students meets the external and general assessment that the researcher uses based on the theory of McDonough and Shaw.

The result of the analysis is a set of concepts or categories, and the goal is to create a short and thorough explanation (providing knowledge, new insights, a picture of reality and a practical plan for action) of the phenomenon34. By analyzing the content, the researcher gains an in-depth understanding of the subject of research, which can be presented in various forms. The researcher reads several times until he is sure that he already covers all aspects of the analysis.

In this external evaluation, other important things that should concern the researcher are whether the textbook is used as a main or supplementary resource, role and existential of the textbook, additional verbal content, visual, cultural value, etc. providing digital materials and providing tests. According to Indonesia's Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology, Nadiem Makarim, there are several policies regarding the Merdeka curriculum concept. This policy was written in the decree of the Minister of Education and Culture no. 43 in 2019.

In theory, the textbook is one of the learning resources that can support both students and teachers in achieving learning goals.

Data Findings

Other findings that indicate the suitability of the English material in the Work in Progress text for tenth grade students are that the listening materials are clear and the speed and length are average. Furthermore, the researcher found that the speaking and listening activities in the English text titled "Work in Progress" for tenth grade students are appropriate for the student's ability level. The author asserted that the textbook is designed as a primary classroom text, as found in the text's introduction.

A total of 79 supporting visual materials are integrated into the texts of the English textbook entitled “Work in Progress” for tenth grade students. The arrangement of images may be one of the reasons why the textbook titled “Work in Progress” for tenth grade students is concise. From the analysis of the materials in the English textbook entitled “Work in Progress” for tenth grade students, the researcher discovered the representation of some minority groups.

The researcher found several evidences related to the test included in the English textbook titled "Work in Progress" for tenth grade students.

THE MATERIAL QUALITY BASED ON THE CRITERIA OF

The researcher found that the English textbook's "Work in Progress" material for grade ten students follows the objective learning of the Merdeka curriculum, which provides multimodal texts. Conclusion

The results related to the clarity of layout and presentation of the English textbook titled "Work in Progress" for tenth grade students will be described as follows.
