INTRODUCTION

Research Background

Previous Research

A reading test measures a student's reading comprehension through the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) Strategy. Rizka Jannatul Muthoharoh (2021) entitled: "Using the Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) Strategy to Improve Eleventh Graders' Critical Thinking Skills in Reading".

As one of the students reads, the teacher asks the students what the title is about. The teacher asks students to open their book after predicting the title of the reading text.

Approach and Type of Research

This chapter presents the research method of this current research which consists of research approach and design, research location, research topic, data collection technique, data analysis, validity of data and research procedure. Descriptive research is aimed at providing systematic and accurate symptoms, facts or events regarding the characteristics of a particular population or region.47 Descriptive qualitative research is only to describe the situation of the object or phenomenon without drawing some general conclusions. and this was done to give a detailed picture of the phenomenon. The purpose of descriptive research is to make a systematic, factual and accurate description of the facts and characteristics of the population.48.

It meant that the result of this research was described through some activities that took place at the beginning of this research, such as the preparatory study, when the strategy was implemented and the instruments used were applied and until the end of this research at analyzing the data.

Research Location

In this research, the researcher chose the descriptive qualitative research because this design appropriated with this current research that it described about the phenomenon that happened in the society, deeply involved in emotional, expression, motivation, ambition according to the field as the research location on SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember. The second reason is that this place is suitable as a place or research field with the title of this research and is proven by the results of the preliminary studies that the researchers did. The uniqueness of the research location as a field in this study is that all students in this school are taught English as a compulsory subject and this also applies to their Islamic boarding school activities.

Thus, by using this strategy, students easily accept it as an effective alternative in the teaching and learning process in the classroom and help students with reading comprehension.

Research Subject

In qualitative research, subjects who felt suitable as research subjects were identified and recruited using purposive sampling.49 Purposive sampling is appropriate for this current study because it concerns the place and people who are instrumental in understanding the central phenomenon in the field. Then, the types of purposive samples used in this study were homogeneous samples, so this type was suitable for the phenomenon. According to the above information, this study used semi-structured and was conducted face-to-face.

So this research took only 30 students from 7A class of SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember as the research subject to do observation.

Data Collection Technique

In this research, the observation was made on the objective conditions of SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember and during the implementation of the teaching of reading comprehension by means of Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy. Semi-structured Interview where the interviewer casually revises questions for the students without disturbing their comfort when the interview section is going on. Furthermore, the entire research subject involved in the interview part enjoyed the interview.

In this research, one-on-one interviews were conducted with the English teacher of SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember while the focus group interviews were conducted with the 4 students of the first grade at SMP SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember.

Data Analysis

In this research, the researcher wrote summaries of what was obtained from the data collection, comprising the purpose, the material, the steps and the evaluation of the teaching of reading comprehension by means of Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy. The data in this stage was organized by the acquisition of the data taken. After that, the researcher described the results of the content of the data to make a verifying conclusion.

The conclusion was made after the presentation of the collected data and facing the in-depth understanding of the data, then the researcher checked the data by checking the correlation of the data with what data was presented, with new data to be used as conclusions purpose, material , steps and evaluation of teaching reading comprehension using the Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy.

Validity of Data

Triangulation of data sources was assessed for the credibility of the data, to check the obtained data for several sources involved in person, place, time, etc. While triangulation of technique was assessed for the credibility of data, to check the same data at different methods. After the data were collected from non-participant observation, one-on-one interview, focus group interview and document review, the researcher had to compare all the instruments.

Then, in this research, for example, where the interview data gave the positive perception about the Direct Reading Thinking Activity Strategy (DRTA) because it was supported by the observation result.

Research Step

Before conducting research, the researcher needed permission in the form of a cover letter from the State Islamic University KH Achmad Siddiq (UIN KHAS) Jember as an application for research permission submitted to SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember. After receiving permission, the researcher began to explore and assess the field to better know the background of the research object and all the circumstances to be investigated, with the aim of making it easier for researchers to dig up data. Once all data is collected, analyze the entire data with qualitative analysis techniques by presenting an overview of data obtained during data collection - the result of the analysis described in the data exposure and research findings.

Once the data was conducted and collected based on the results of observation, interview and document review, the data was analyzed using Huberman and Saldano's model.

RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

Description of the Research Object

At the Bustanul Ulum Mlokorejo Islamic boarding school there are two types of education, namely Islamic boarding school education and formal education. Islamic residential education includes Islamic residential activities (kitab kuning recitation), while formal education includes junior high school (SMP), senior high school (SMA). The creation of a generation that is pious, intelligent and skilled, creative and committed to mutual cooperation, respect and courtesy towards parents, kinship, love for the alma mater and the motherland.

From the interviews conducted by the researcher with the English teacher (Miss Aini), it can be concluded that there are three objectives of teaching reading comprehension through the DRTA strategy in the first grade of SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger-Jember, specifically: to make students more. focused on the text, make students more critical in understanding the content of the story and students to be more confident in arguing and expressing their opinions. From the researcher's interviews conducted with the English teacher (Miss Aini), it can be concluded that the teaching of reading comprehension through the DRTA strategy to the first grade students of SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum Puger Jember is narrative text material and began to explain the structure . of the text to its linguistic elements. The teacher asks the students to guess the content of the reading based on the title and the pictures given, then asks the students to read to match the predictions.

The data collected above regarding interviews, observation and document review of the evaluation of teaching reading comprehension through the DRTA strategy in the first grade in SMP Plus Bustanul Ulum.

Suggestions
