THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Figurative Language

As in literature, adding figurative language to a literary text will provide aesthetic value that can enhance one's emotions through the text. Figurative language is included in the linguistic structure in which there is syntax, phonology, morphology and literal semantics.5 Figurative language refers to words and groups of words that exaggerate or change the usual meaning in figures of speech of the constituent words. . Figurative language are words that carry suggestive or symbolic meaning beyond the literal level.6 Meanwhile, Dancygier and Sweetser stated that figurative language is thought to be related to an aspect of what gives a text in expressing the idea in a particular language and a text poetic - special aesthetic. value.7.

Since it makes it easier for people to communicate with each other, figurative language is an essential part of literature. Besides, when someone uses a figurative word when they speak, it indicates that they don't mean what they say literally. Speakers and writers can use figurative language to express a variety of meanings in various ways.

Abrams argued that figurative language is a striking departure from what users of a language consider the standard meaning of words, or else the standard order of words, to achieve a special meaning or effect. Figures are sometimes described as primarily poetic, but they are integral to the functioning of language and indispensable to all forms of discourse. Figures of thought, or figures of speech (meaning 'alter conversions'), in which words or phrases are used in a way that produces a noticeable change in what we take to be their standard meaning.

The standard meaning, as opposed to its meaning in figurative usage, is called the literal meaning. Figures of speech, is the use of language mainly through the arrangement of their words to achieve special effects, and not through a radical change in the meaning of the words themselves. Figurative speech, in which the deviation from standard usage is not primarily in the meaning of the words, but in the order or syntactic pattern of the words. 10.
