The two wires coming from the installation connect to the black wires and the white wires from the ceiling. Lift the new fixture up to the ceiling (you may want a helper for this) and connect the bare copper ground wire from the power supply cable to the ground screw or clip on the mounting strap.

Recessed Ceiling Lights

Recessed Materials

How to Install Recessed Ceiling Lights

First, you will need to remove the cutouts and ensure that the cable is secured with a wire clip within 8" of the entry point into the box. Connect the ground wires and screw them to the ground screw or clip in the box.

How to Connect a Recessed Fixture Can in a Finished Ceiling

Connect the black fixture wire to the black fixture wire, the white fixture wire to the white fixture wire, and then connect the ground wire to the ground screw or Push the mounting clips back to grip the drywall and hold the fixture in place.

Track Lights

If you currently have a ceiling-mounted light fixture that doesn't meet your lighting needs, it's easy to replace it with a track light fixture. With track lighting you can easily change the type and number of lights, their position on the track and the direction they aim.

How to Install Track Lighting

Place the track part in the assembly seat on the assembly tape and temporarily hold it in place where it will be installed. Insert the light heads into the rail by pushing the stem into the rail slot and then twisting it so that the electrical contact points on the head are pressed against the electrified internal rails of the rail slot.

Undercabinet Lights

How to Install a Hardwired Undercabinet Light

Cut a hole in the back panel of the base cabinet to gain access to the wall behind it in roughly the area where you know the neighboring container is. Drill an access hole into the kitchen wall for the cable that will feed. Cut a small access hole or so) in the back panel of the base cabinet directly below the base cabinet light location.

Route the cable into the access hole on the light until the end reaches the bottom access hole. Reach into the access hole and find the free end of the cable, then pull it out through the access hole when you find it. Tip: Drill a new cable access hole close to the square access hole to make patching the cabinet easier.

Hang the pipe with hanging straps attached to the base cabinet frame or back panel and drill holes in the side walls of the cabinet where necessary to run the pipe through. Install the electrical distribution box on the back of the cabinet near the outlet that provides the power. Some models have a removable diffuser to allow access to the fixture wires and these must be screwed to the overhead cabinet before you do your wiring.

Vanity Lights

How to Replace Vanity Lights in a Finished Bathroom

Install the boxes about 66" above the floor and 18 to 20" from the centerline of the mirror (the mounting base of some fixtures is above or below the lamp, so adjust the height of the bracket accordingly). If the right location is on or next to a stud, you can attach the box directly to the stud, otherwise you will need to install blockers or use boxes with adjustable brackets (shown). Open the side knockouts in the electrical box above the vanity. holes in the centers of each stud between the old and new fixtures.

Run two NM cables from the new boxes to the fixtures to the box above the vanity. Secure the cables with cable clamps, leaving 11" of extra cable to connect to the new fixtures. Connect the white wires from the new cables to the white wire from the old cable, and connect the black wires from the new cables to the black wire from the old cable .

Cover all open boxes and then replace the drywall, leaving openings for the fixture and the old box. Attach the fixtures by connecting the black circuit wire to the black fixture wire and connecting the white circuit wire to the white fixture wire.

Low-voltage Cable Lights

Low-voltage Cable Lighting Kit

Low-voltage cable lights are unobtrusive and easy to install, but provide a surprising amount of light.

How to Install Low-voltage Cable Lighting Cable Light Kits

Place a parallel line for the screw eyes used to hang the cables. Install wall anchors at the indicated locations for the screw eyes from which the cables will be hung. Thread the screw eyes into the wall anchor sleeves making sure they are tightened in equal amounts and not overdone.

Install a set of screw eyes equally spaced on each opposite wall in the installation area. Cut two lengths of low-voltage cable so that they can be stretched between the screw eyes on opposite walls. Recommendations may vary: for the project shown here, the cable was cut 12 inches shorter than the cable.

Slide the tensioners over the screw lugs and tighten until the cables are taut. The model shown here has a separate chrome cover that is secured with a set screw after the transformer is mounted on the transom. Route the short cables into the holes on the screw terminals on the transformer.

Wall-mount It

Hang the fixture holders from the cables and tighten the screws in the ends of the hanger until their probes pierce the cable jacket and make contact. It's a good idea to hang all the fixtures and arrange them as desired before you start tightening the screws and piercing the mantel. Place the special low-voltage lamps in the luminaire holders and secure them as indicated (here we tighten a set screw).

Turn on the power and test the lights and adjust the angles and directions of the bulbs.

How to Install Low-Voltage Landscape Lights

Drill a hole through the wall or edge beam through which the low-voltage cable and any sensors can pass. If a circuit begins in a high-traffic area, protect the cable by running it through a short length of PVC pipe or conduit and then into the shallow trench. Many low-voltage lighting fixtures are modular, consisting of a nailed base, a riser, and a bulb.

On these units, run the wires and wire connector from the light section down through the riser and into the base. Disassemble the connector box and insert the ends of the wiring wire and the low-voltage horizontal cable into it. Insert the wire connector back into the light base and attach it to the lamp holder according to the instructions.

Carefully force the cable into the slot formed by the spade; do not tear the wire insulation. When the lamp is stabilized, insert any additional wire into the opening using the paint stick. No part of the wire must be exposed when you have finished the work.

Motion-Sensing Floodlights

It has an infrared eye that activates the light device when a moving object crosses its path. Choose a lighting fixture with: a photocell to prevent the light from flashing in daylight; an adjustable timer to control how long the light stays on; and the range control to adjust the range of the motion sensor eye. Keep the motion sensor adjusted to cover only the area you want to secure - if the coverage area is too large, the light will flash frequently.

How to Install a New Exterior Fixture Box

Estimate the distance between the inside switch box and the outside motion sensor box, and cut a length of NM cable about 2 ft. Use fishing tape to pull the cable from the switch box to the motion sensor box. Place the cable in the box so that at least 1/4" of the outer sheath enters the box.

Apply a heavy bead of silicone or polyurethane to the flange of the electrical box before attaching it to the wall. Insert the box into the cutout opening and tighten the mounting screws until the brackets pull the outer flange firmly against the sidewall.

How to Replace a Floodlight with a Motion-Sensor Light

With the light switch on, insert the sensor probe into the electrical box and hold it within 1/2" of the wires inside to make sure no voltage is flowing. Examine the ends of the three wires coming out of the box (one white, one black and one bare copper). If the electrical box is non-metallic and does not have a metal grounding terminal, install a grounding terminal or replace the box with one that has a terminal and make sure that the grounding wire is attached to it securely.

If yours has one, attach the house ground wire directly to the terminal. Start by sliding a rubber or foam gasket (usually supplied with the fixture) over the threads and onto the flange of the. Then connect the black wire from the box and the single black wire from the fixture with a wire connector.

You may see a pair of black wires and a red wire already connected to the fixture. Align the holes in the gasket with the holes in the box, then place the fixture over the gasket so that the mounting holes also line up with the gasket. Press the fixture against the gasket and tighten the four mounting screws in the box.
