Tohoku University Graduate School of Life Sciences Application Guidelines for Academic Year 2015-2016

International Students Program of the International Course of Advanced Life Sciences

The following are the application guidelines for the Tohoku University Graduate School of Life Sciences International Course of Advanced Life Sciences for the academic year 2015-2016.

Students who are enrolled in this program may be awarded, upon selection, scholarships from the Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) through their Support Program for International Students (JASSO Scholarship).

1. Number of students to be accepted Six

(Note: The maximum number of JASSO scholarship students per month is six, and the maximum accumulated total is 72 student-months over 12 months.)

2. Application requirements

Students who are eligible to apply for this program shall satisfy each of the following conditions:

(1) Students who are enrolled as graduate students in regular graduate courses of universities in their home countries that have concluded a provision of “exemption of tuition fees” based on the

university-to-university academic exchange agreement ratified with Tohoku University and, after completing the term of this program at Tohoku University, will return to universities in their home countries to continue their graduate studies.

(Note: If the above exchange agreement has not been ratified with Tohoku University, please contact prospective supervisors in your desired field of research and consult them.)

(2) Students whose major is in the field of natural sciences.

(3) Students who are motivated and satisfy the following (4. Requirements for completion) and have the ability to study at the graduate level and conduct joint research at the International Course of Advanced Life Sciences.

Specific fields of research (biomolecular sciences, developmental biology and neurosciences, and environmental life sciences)

3. Period of the program

From October 2015 to September 2016 (one year)

4. Requirements for completion

#Core A (Ethics) and Core B are compulsory subjects, and specialized subjects are electives; must

participate in seminars and the project experiments (A) held at laboratories where accepted. Students must report the results of the credits approved by their home universities. The method of credit approval is pursuant to the provisions of their home universities.

#The following reports must be submitted without delay.

- A research report (ca. five pages on A4 size paper)

- The reports required using JASSO-specified forms (only for students awarded JASSO Scholarships)

5. Application procedure

Select a prospective supervisor in the research field of applicant’s interest; contact him/her directly and after obtaining their consent to be supervisor, apply for acceptance into this program.

b. Written acceptance (copy of email text for communication, etc.) (arbitrary form using A4 size paper) c. Academic transcript from the students’ universities in their home countries and a certificate of

enrollment

(Jointly submit notes with explanation of academic evaluation standards and the method of evaluation)

* Please calculate GPA on JASSO-specified scale using the Application Form for the JASSO Scholarship. Please note that students are required to have a minimum GPA of 2.30 to receive the JASSO Scholarship.

6. Expenses for studying in Japan

Enrolled students shall bear the expenses related to studying in Japan. However, some participating students may be awarded the JASSO Scholarships.

7. JASSO Scholarship

The JASSO Scholarship is awarded upon selection to students who participate in this program and satisfy the qualifications and requirements for this scholarship.

(Note: Applicants who will be awarded other scholarships in addition to the JASSO scholarship must check any requirements or restrictions of the scholarships. If other scholarships exceed 80,000 yen per month, the applicant cannot receive a JASSO scholarship.)

- Number of JASSO Scholarship students per month: six - Amount of monthly stipend: 80,000 yen

8. Type of enrollment at Tohoku University Special non-degree research student

9. Others

(1) In the following cases, students may not be allowed to participate in this program even though they have been selected for this program:

- Students who have not received approval for studying abroad from the universities in their home countries.

- Students who are not expected to satisfy the eligibility requirements for this program when they submit the application documents

- Students who become ill and cannot complete their course of study.

- Students who are considered inappropriate, for some reason, to participate in this program.

(2) Procedures for coming to and from Japan (applying for certificate of eligibility, arranging for accommodations, etc.) are the responsibility of the laboratories accepting the students.
