Evening of the Arts – April 2
Evening of the Arts, an annual event showcasing the performing arts talents of IUSM students, faculty and staff, will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School.
For college basketball fans reluctant to miss the Butler Bulldogs fight their way to the top in Saturday night’s NCAA Final Four matchup, the lobby will be set up with computers streaming the game. Go Dawgs!
In addition, Evening of the Arts will include a silent auction of student, faculty and staff artworks, whcih will begin when the doors open at 5:30 p.m. and continue through the intermission.

Health Engagement Program feedback session
Faculty and staff are invited to participate in an interactive community conversation on the IU Health Engagement Program from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 4, in the IUPUI Campus Center, room 450C.
Participants will be able to provide feedback on how IU can best design and implement a health engagement program that creates a climate of healthy lifestyle engagement, meets the needs of employees to maximize participation and is supported by the culture and environment at IUPUI. Input is sought for all aspects of health engagement, including, but not limited to, dietary support, exercise programs and lifestyle initiatives.
A reservation is not required to attend a session.

Associate director for entrepreneurship sought
The search to fill the leadership position of associate director for entrepreneurship,
Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (Indiana CTSI) and assistant dean for entrepreneurial research at the IU School of Medicine, has been initiated by David Wilkes, MD, executive associate dean for research affairs.
This position will be a part-time (about 25 percent). Candidates must be current senior, experienced research faculty at IUSM.

Lillemoe farewell party
A farewell party for Keith D. Lillemoe, MD, chair and Jay L. Grosfeld Professor of Surgery, will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 8, at the University Place Hotel and Conference Center.
Dr. Lillemore has been named the surgeon-in-chief and chief of the Department of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Student Showcase
Rock for Riley VII with Matt and Kim – April 7
Matt & Kim will perform live in Indianapolis at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at The Vogue Theatre in Broad Ripple as part of the seventh installment of the annual Rock for Riley concert series.
Matt & Kim have a large fan base and have won an MTV Video Music Award in 2009 for Breakthrough Video. Matt & Kim recently released their third full-length album in November 2010 that features “Cameras” as the first single from Sidewalks. This concert will be a great opportunity to hear their new album live before the start of their Sidewalks tour in late May.
Rock for Riley is a one-of-a-kind organization, created and managed by IUSM students.
As IUSM’s largest student-run philanthropic group, Rock for Riley gives students a unique opportunity to donate their time and energy to pediatric patients in a creative way. Rock for Riley’s primary mission is to organize an annual benefit concert in support of the Riley Hospital for Children, Indiana's only comprehensive children's hospital.
Each year, the Rock for Riley show features a nationally recognized band at an established Indianapolis music venue. Rock for Riley’s inaugural concert featured Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe and raised nearly $25,000. Subsequent concerts have featured well-known
musical acts, from Wilco and My Morning Jacket to local rising stars Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s. IUSM faculty, staff, residents and students are encouraged to attend the show.

Student orchestra to perform spring concert
The IU School of Medicine Orchestra, a musical ensemble featuring students, faculty and friends of the school, will hold a spring concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the Indiana Historical Society.
The concert will include performances of Nabucco Overture by Giuseppe Verdi, Variations on a Shaker Melody by Aaron Copland, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace by John Williams (arr. Jerry Brubaker) and Voyage for String Orchestra by John Corigliano.
The IUSM Alumni Association will host a reception immediately following the

Creative Arts Therapy founder recognized
Katy Dickerson, MS4, founder of the Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) program sponsored by the IUSM Office of Medical Service-Learning, presented an overview of the CAT program at the Society for Humanism in Medicine 41st Annual Conference in February.
As noted in the conference program, Dickerson’s presentation discussed “how a group of like-minded students created a vibrant organization that helps examine non-traditional aspects of health care within the context of a classic medical student education.

New MCAT Exam recommendations released
The AAMC has released preliminary recommendations for a new version of the Medical College Admission Test. The proposed recommendations were developed by a 22-member advisory panel appointed by the AAMC in 2008 to review the current MCAT Exam.
The recommendations will be introduced with the 2015 MCAT Exam, pending approval by the AAMC Board of Directors in February 2012.

IU Health News
Simon Cancer Center researcher receives $100,000
Chunyan He, ScD, assistant professor of public health at IUSM, will receive $100,000 from the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation for Cancer Research, during a news conference and check presentation at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Kay Yow Cancer Fund partners with the National Collegiate Athletic Association each year to leave a $100,000 research grant in the NCAA Women’s Final Four host city.
All are welcome to attend the press conference. Free parking is available inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The check presentation will take place on Pagoda Plaza.

World Hunger Banquet – April 3
The third annual IUPUI Hunger Banquet will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 3, in the IUPUI Campus Center, room 450.
This fundraiser and advocacy event will raise awareness about world hunger. Keynote speaker will be Dave Miner, national chairman for Bread for the World. All proceeds of this year's event will benefit the IU-Kenya Orphans and Vulnerable Children's Program and the Tumaini Children's Center in Eldoret, Kenya.
The banquet will feature entertainment groups and booths showcasing the work of other IUPUI and Indianapolis organizations. Guests will be seated in first-, second- and third-world dining areas with ethnic cuisine representing each region.

Center for Teaching and Learning workshops
The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning will offer several workshops next week focusing on research and education.
Tuesday, April 5: “IRB Review for Education Projects” from noon to 1:30 p.m., in the IUSM Library, room 1116, will address the definition of human subjects research and the qualifications for different IRB review levels including levels of risk, consent and subject
population. The presenters also will discuss the review and approval process of the Human Subject Office.
Thursday, April 7: This online workshop from noon to 1 p.m. will focus on creating an inclusive curriculum and a classroom environment. Attend this session to learn how to create a positive classroom environment supporting the success of all students by using effective techniques to increase inclusivity and maximize learning.

Public health conference registration open
Registration is now open for the 2011 Indiana Joint National Public Health Week Conference on April 5-6 at the IUPUI Campus Center.
This year's theme is "Safety is NO Accident, Live Injury Free!" Fairbanks Ethics lecture on palliative care
Holly G. Prigerson, PhD, will present a Fairbanks Ethics lecture entitled "Dying Better:
Lessons from the Coping with Cancer Study" from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the Methodist Hospital Pettigrew Auditorium.
Dr. Prigerson is director of the Center for Psycho-Oncology and Palliative Care Research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, associate professor of psychiatry in Brigham and Women's Department of Psychiatry, and associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.
Her research focuses on advancing understanding on the interpersonal and intrapersonal factors that influence the quality of life of individuals confronting advanced cancer.

Medical Humanities-Health Seminar
The final Medical Humanities-Health Studies seminar of the semester will be from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in the IUPUI Campus Center, room 305.
Emily Beckman, DMH, an assistant scholar with MHHS, will present "The Content of Hope,"
a discussion about the role hope plays for cancer patients. She will discuss the possibility that what a patient hopes for may have a profound effect on discussions regarding the patient's treatment options and quality of life.

Grant writing workshop for research faculty
The Research Faculty Development Series will present a grant writing workshop from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, in the Walther Hall (R3) auditorium.
This workshop, which will feature lecture and group exercise components, will provide participants practical rhetorical strategies for describing their research proposal as a short story rather than a novel. It will introduce sentence-, paragraph- and section-level tips for writing concisely without sacrificing core content. The value of reflection and rewriting during proposal preparation will also be discussed.
The workshop will focus predominantly on the NIH R01 proposal format. Excerpts from proposals written in the new format will be used to illustrate key concepts.

Research Technologies Fair – April 15
University Information Technology Services and the IU Pervasive Technology Unit will co-host a Research Technologies Fair from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, April 15, in the IUPUI Technology Building, second floor student lounge.
This event will provide in-depth information to anyone interested in learning more about the university's research computing systems, from long-time collaborations to new members of IU's research community. Participants will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with UITS technologists or arrange a consultation session to learn how to leverage IU's world class research computing infrastructure for data analysis, storage, management, visualization, publishing and database needs.

Indiana CTSI third annual meeting
The third annual meeting of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute will be Monday, April 25, at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel. The theme of this year's meeting is "Enhancing Health Care and Research Through Public-Private Partnerships."
The keynote speaker will be Barbara Alving, MD, director of the National Center for Research Resources at the NIH. Additional guest speakers will include Andrew Schafer, MD, chairman of medicine at Cornell University, and Jan Lundberg, PhD, president of Lilly Research Laboratories, as well as internal updates from the IU Health, Wishard Hospital and the Indiana Institute for Personalized Medicine. Woodard Memorial Scholarship fundraiser
Tickets are on sale for a May 13 tent event to raise funds for IUSM's Keith Woodard Memorial Scholarship Fund at Rick’s Café Boatyard, 4050 Dandy Trail, Indianapolis. The event will begin at 7 p.m.
The Woodard Scholarship was established in memory of Keith Woodard, MD, an IUSM alumni who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 2008. Dr. Woodward helped people in severe poverty and those hit by disasters around the world. He was part of a tsunami relief team in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, went to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and made several trips to Kenya to assist people with limited access to health care.
Rick’s Café Boatyard will contribute $5 from every $20 admission ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the door or at 290-9300. Food, music and drink specials are included in the ticket price.

Frank McCormick, PhD, associate dean and director of the Helen Diller Family
Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of California, San Francisco, will deliver the keynote address at IU Simon Cancer Center Cancer Research Day on Thursday, May 26, at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel.
IU Simon Cancer Center Cancer Research Day is an annual event that aims to increase understanding and awareness of IU Simon Cancer Center research endeavors and encourage collaboration with other cancer research institutions in Indiana.

Kids Healthcast podcasts from pediatric residents
Kids Healthcast, a monthly podcasts from pediatric residents at IUSM that provides
easy-to-understand, evidence-based health information, celebrated its first year on-air last month with a themed episode focusing on childhood obesity.
The residents who produce the podcast research and present six topics during each
30-minute episode, many focused on concerns or questions raised by parents of the patients the residents have seen at Riley Hospital. Over the past year, monthly downloads have increased ten-fold as listeners from across the country—and beyond—have tuned in to learn more about topics including transitioning babies to solid food, teen driving, seasonal allergies and how to prevent colds and flu.
Kids Healthcast is available without charge anytime in the iTunes store and may be played on an iPhone, iPad, MP-3 player or computer. The program is funded by the Division of General and Community Pediatrics of the Department of Pediatrics.

This Week on Sound Medicine
This weekend, Saturday, April 2, and Sunday, April 3, Sound Medicine, the award-winning radio show airing on WFYI, 90.1FM, and on many other public radio stations, IU
health-policy authority Aaron Carroll will explain health benefit options for the nation’s new Affordable Care Act. Also this week, experts discuss how radiation exposure will affect Japanese citizens, why less sedation is better in the ICU, and what predisposes people to psoriatic arthritis. Sound Medicine
Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act last year, actuaries at insurance companies have been working out the coverage and benefit details. Sound Medicine’s health policy analyst, Aaron Carroll, MD, will join Barbara Lewis to provide insight on this process. Dr.
Carroll is an associate professor of pediatrics at IU School of Medicine and director of the IU’s Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research.
It’s been more than three weeks since the Japanese nuclear power plant was damaged by earthquake and tsunami. The evacuation zone has been expanded, and there have been runs on bottled water in Tokyo. Barbara Lewis will speak with radiation expert Peter Johnstone, MD, to discover what medical problems lay ahead for workers at the power plant and for the people who live nearby. Dr. Johnstone chairs the department of radiation oncology at IUSM.
Common practice in intensive care unit has been to keep patients heavily sedated and often immobilized during the healing process. Now, the emphasis in the ICU is on lighter sedation and rousing the patient as soon as possible. Geriatrician Malaz Boustani, MD, MPH, researches the effects of sedation. With Sound Medicine’s Steve Bogdewic, PhD, Dr. Boustani will explain the problems heavy sedation causes and the need for new ICU protocols. Dr. Boustani is an associate professor of medicine at IUSM and a researcher at the IU Center for Aging Research.
The Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia, opens this week. Expected to be among the top finishers is veteran Phil Mickelson, who plays with a different sort of handicap. Mickelson suffers from psoriatic arthritis, which can make it difficult to grip and control his clubs. To learn about this condition, Sound Medicine’s Kathy Miller, MD, will speak with Cleveland Clinic arthritis specialist Elaine Husni, MD, MPH. Dr. Husni is vice chair of rheumatology and director of the Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Center at the Cleveland Clinic.
Also on this week’s show, nutritionist and essayist Alix Litwak will provide advice for “spring cleaning” our cupboards and refrigerators.

Spirit of Medicine — request for applications
Spirit and Medicine, an IU Health Values funded reading and discussion program to begin in August, is accepting applications.
The Spirit of Medicine program will include monthly evening meetings to discuss seminal readings and meet with leaders in spirituality and medicine. The program deals not only with the human body but also with the human spirit, and excelling as a physician, which frequently requires knowledge, experience and skill in both domains.

IU Simon Cancer Center seeks poster abstracts
Students, fellows, and faculty conducting cancer research at IUPUI, IU-Bloomington, Purdue University, and the Walther Cancer Research Center at the University of Notre Dame are eligible to present their current cancer research efforts at the May 26 IU Simon Cancer Center Research Day.
Cash awards for best posters by graduate students, post-doctoral/medical fellows, research technicians, and clinical nurses in all three research categories will be selected by a review board.
Abstracts should be submitted for basic science, translational/clinical research, or population science/epidemiologycategories. Individual laboratories may submit multiple abstracts; if space becomes limited, each laboratory will be asked to identify representative posters.

LGBT mini-grants available
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Faculty/Staff Council at IUPUI is awarding multiple mini-grants up to $500 for faculty, staff and students who wish to promote or enhance knowledge, tolerance, sensitivity and/or develop understanding of LGBT
issues and/or the LGBT community through the development of co-curricular academic programming.
Examples are, but not limited to, attending or hosting LGBT-focused event(s), purchasing LGBT-related film/media or books, paying LGBT-focused speaker honorariums/fees and supporting LGBT-focused research.
Deadline for Summer/Fall 2011 Programs is 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 22. Award notifications by May 2.

Wright Scholarship – request for applications
The William J. Wright Scholarship is awarded to third- and fourth-year medical students, physicians in cancer-related post-doctoral training programs and medical doctors employed by IUSM and pursuing cancer-related fellowship training.
Eligible applicants should demonstrate the commitment and potential for conducting cancer research as well as outstanding character and well-defined professional goals. It’s also expected eliigable students will devote at least two months of their school year to a project that will further the care of patients with cancer, including a formal basic, translational or clinical science research project; quality improvement project, health outcome research or cancer awareness program.

Research Funding Update
The IU Office of the Vice Provost for Research and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research offers weekly digests containing information about funding opportunities including those that limit the number of allowable pre-proposal or proposal submissions.

Roberta A. Hibbard, MD, professor of pediatrics, has been selected to receive the 2011 IUPUI Chancellor’s Faculty Award for Excellence in Civic Engagement. This award will be officially conferred Friday, April 29, at the University Place Conference Center and Hotel auditorium.
James F. Malec, PhD, professor and research director of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, has been awarded the prestigious Moody Prize for his contributions to clinical care and research. The award, which includes a $10,000 honorarium, a citation and an inscribed statue, will be presented on May 5 at the Galveston Brain Injury Conference in Galveston, Texas. Dr. Malec is known for his work in cognitive and behavioral rehabilitation, vocational reintegration and outcome measurement, including the development of the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory.
Candice Marcum, MD, a fourth-year resident in the Department of Surgery, has won a Society of University Surgeons Travelling Fellowship Award for her talk entitled "Racial Disparities in Breast Cancer Outcomes: Are They Predestined?" Dr. Marcum will present her research at the 46th annual meeting of the European Society for Surgical Research on May 25-28, in Aachen, Germany. Her award winning paper will be presented during at the prestigious Walter Brendel Award Plenary Session at the ESSR meeting.
Danielle Osterholzer, MD, assistant professor of clinical medicine and clinical pediatrics, infectious disease, was named the IUSM Med Peds Faculty of the Year by students in the Pediatrics/Medicine Residency Program.
Rajiv Sood, MD, has been named recipient of the prestigious Achievement in Medicine (AIM) Award. Dr. Sood cares for and treats nearly 400 inpatient and 2,200 outpatient burn patients each year and has been cited for being "instrumental in leading patient care through innovative burn care research and ongoing positive clinical outcomes." The AIM Award recipient is selected by the St. Margaret's Hospital Guild.

Campus Blood Drive – April 28
The IUPUI Staff Council, Circle K Student Government and the Indiana Blood Center will host a blood drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in Van Nuys Medical School Building atrium and Taylor Hall Bloodmobile.
The Indiana Blood Center collects 550 units of blood every day to support over 60 Indiana hospitals. This nonprofit community service organization provides a continuous, safe and adequate supply of blood products and testing services to the people in Indiana.

IUPUI Walking Challenge – register April 4
The IUPUI Work/Life Walking Challenge kick off will be from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Friday, April 8, in Lecture Hall 100, south of Cavanaugh Hall.
This year’s kick-off event will include a guest speaker, Avis Frieson, an IUPUI staffer who’s achieved considerable health and fitness benefits by becoming a more dedicated walker.
Participants in the program will record their steps for three weeks from 6 a.m. Saturday, April 9 to 5:59 a.m. Saturday, April 30.
The first 100 people to sign up will receive a free pedometer at the kick-off event.
Participants who wish to receive additional materials, including a booklet, record sheet and plan for working up to 10,000 a day, contact Maggie Stimming at [email protected].

MedTV
The Office of Public and Media Relations now manages the MedTV screens on the medical school campus. This closed-circuit TV system, part of the IUPUI network, presents a wonderful opportunity for faculty, staff and students to communicate events and information of interest to others. It also serves as a source for broadcasting emergency information on campus.
The MedTVs are located in public areas of the HITS building, the VanNuys Medical Science Building atrium, the Daly Center, Research II, Walther Hall (R3) and the Cancer Research Institute (R4).
Announcements from departments and offices are welcome. To have your department or office announcements posted on MedTV, please read the MedTV guidelines: medicine.iu.edu/medtv.

Scope submission guidelines
Scope wants your news items.
The deadline for submission is 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays. Scope is published electronically and sent to faculty, staff, students, and residents on Fridays (except on holiday weekends when it is published on the following Monday).
There are three easy ways to submit story ideas or information to Scope:

Contributions submitted by e-mail should be forwarded in 12 point, plain text format. Word document attachments in lieu of fliers are encouraged.
In the interest of accuracy, please do NOT use:

• campus building codes (use full, proper name of building and include the room number)
• Dr. as a preface before names (designate MD or PhD)
