A hotel is a building managed by a person or company on a commercial basis, where the hotel will provide lodging or accommodation services, as well as food and drink services and other services and facilities.

Hotel History

The word hotel comes from French. The term hotel comes from the word hostel which means a place to shelter migrants and provide food and drink. The word hostel itself is taken from Latin, namely the word hospes

The history of the hospitality begins in Europe, namely England. Hotels were first introduced in London in 1797. This hotel was known as the Garni Hotel. This Garni Hotel is a house that is rented to someone who is traveling.

The history of international hospitality first occurred in England. Previously, hotel employees there were like civil servants or in other words public servants. However, as time goes by and more people use hotel services, they are starting to try to make a profit. In the history of hotels in the world, guests were charged a fee for staying overnight. In this way, the building of this house began to be renovated to make staying guests comfortable.

Despite this, the history of international hotel development has not changed, hotel service standards have not changed over the years. Until 1793, when the City Hotel was founded in New York City, this hotel became a pioneer in the construction of a new, more modern or fashionable style of hotel. This is because the basis for building the City Hotel is not only to prioritize strategic location, but also to consider the hotel as a resting place for its guests.

The history of the hospitality then began to develop. Legendary hotels emerged such as the Tremont House in Boston in 1829 which is rightfully called the best in the United States. Then there is the Tremont Hotel which competes fiercely with the Astor House which was founded in New York in 1836.

At that time in the history of international hotels, hotels were built at almost every transit train station. At that time, the construction of the railway network was in full swing.

So many people will stay in hotels near the train station.

Along with the development of hotels in the world and also technology, as well as the wider reach of land transportation, especially the introduction of motorized vehicles, the area around train stations no longer attracts investors' interest in developing the hotel industry.

People prefer to travel by car rather than using the train. The existence of transit hotels is starting to be rivaled by the presence of a new type of hotel, namely "motels". Motel

(2)

is an abbreviation of the words motorbike and hotel. So from here the history of international hospitality changed again

However, the motel's existence did not last long. Along with the development of the hotel industry and the rapid development of the city, the era of the motel also ended. This is because motels are less good than hotels in the city center in terms of facilities. Plus the emergence of resorts that offer lodging services that are no less good. So once again the history of international hotels changed again.

Apart from resort hotels, in the 1990s a new type of hotel emerged, known as extended-stay hotels. This hotel is a hotel specifically for guests staying more than 5 nights.

History of Hospitality in Indonesia

The history of the development of hotels in Indonesia has not been revealed much, nor have there been many books that reveal this dilemma. Indonesia has been known in the world of tourism since before World War I, but the number of tourists visiting is still in the thousands.

Along with the development of the history of hotels in Indonesia, the arrival of foreign tourists to Indonesia who needed adequate tourism accommodation facilities, during Dutch colonial rule, hotels began to develop in Indonesia.

The following is the history of hotel development in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial period

History of National Hotels

Most of these hotels are still operating today, some have been turned into Herritage Hotels, some have been renovated to be more beautiful and some have been completely redeveloped so that they no longer resemble their original form, such as the Hotel Des Indes.

In 1960 the hotel changed hands to the Indonesian government and was changed to the Indonesian Duta Hotel. In 1971 the hotel building was opened to make way for the Duta Merlin shop. The photo beside is a photo of the Hotel Des Indes 1925-1940 (source: Google)

After the period of the New Order government, hotel construction and attendance in Indonesia grew rapidly. Especially after the entry of international hotel 'management' chains, most of which invest in big cities in Indonesia.

In line with the development of hotels in Indonesia, the appearance of hotel

architecture in Indonesia is very developed and innovative. But this has become a benchmark for the history of hotels in Indonesia.

Hotel Development in Indonesia

Along with the growth of the world of Indonesian tourism, the history of hotels in Indonesia has even contributed to its success. The existence of hotels in Indonesia is of course really necessary in the tourism and hotel industry, considering that without adequate accommodation, it is impossible for tourists to want to visit.

Indonesia's tourism industry is increasingly growing when tourism in Bali begins to receive serious attention. In 1963, the Bali Beach Hotel was built, then in the next three years Ngurah Rai Airport was approved as an international port. In recent developments, hotels in

Bali are increasingly filled with foreign tourists who we can find in other areas, even in remote villages.

Not much different from Bali, tourism in other places has even revived. Like Malang, East Java, which has several potential holiday destinations. The one that stands out the most and is visited by visitors is the Batu area, with its hilly contours, apple and Selekta

plantations, as well as tulip plantations, so the atmosphere is similar to the Netherlands.

This shady city, which is 90 km south of the city of Surabaya, is starting to grow and organize supporting facilities and infrastructure. As if wanting to preserve historical heritage.

The Malang City Government consistently maintains hotels built during the Dutch colonial era.

As an example, Hotel Pelangi, which is classified as one of the oldest hotels in the city that we also know as Student City. Until now, this hotel, which is located on Jalan

Merdeka, has consistently been a hotel that is suitable for tourists to stay in and even provides an aesthetic reminiscence of the past via the "old school" photos displayed on the hotel walls.

Meanwhile, the condition of hotels in Bandung is also no less vibrant. The development of various businesses, such as distros, cuisine, cafes, home industries and factory outlets (FO), has made the Flower City attract many tourists. Especially on weekends or holidays, there are lots of visitors coming to Bandung.

As a result, the hotel business in Bandung also increased. Various classes of hotels, from jasmine class to star class, from cheap prices to expensive prices, can be found easily near busy centers or near holiday destinations.

So that was the discussion about the history of the world and Indonesian hotel industry. The development of hotels over time has indeed seen many changes so that we know hotels today.

According to a journal written by Agung Gita Subakti in 2013, it was stated :
