Long-term project visits Galeta
Lynn Atkinson from the University of Connecticut and her 5-year old son Benjamin, collect alates and workers from multiple-queen colonies of the termite Nasutitermes corniger in Galeta, to assess reproductive apportionment among co- occurring queen and kings. This is part of a long-term project to examine the causes and consequences of N. corniger variation in colony reproductive structures. Atkinson and assistants focus on the number of breeding females and males (queens and kings) and reproductive skew. They collect the workers opening a small portion of the nest and vacuuming the specimens, to avoid damage to the colony population or the nest. As an additional way to monitor changes in colony structure over time, they will collect workers from nests previously sampled in 1992, 1994 and 1995 at several sites around Panama City, Gamboa and Galeta. The group also plans to initiate long-term monitoring of Nasutitermes corniger nests on BCI. The nests will be photographed and their locations along BCI trails noted so that they can return to them in future years of this project and beyond.
Lynn Atkinson, de la Universidad de Connecticut y su hijo Benjamin de cinco años, colectan termitas aladas y trabajadoras en colonias de múltiples reinas de termitas Nasutitermes corniger en Galeta, para examinar las proporciones entre los reyes y reinas presentes. Este estudio es parte de un proyecto a largo plazo para examinar las causas y consecuencias de la variación de N. corniger en las estructuras reproductivas de las colonias. Atkinson y sus asistentes se concentran en el número de machos y hembras criadoras (reinas y reyes) y la curva de reproducción. Ellos colectan termitas haciendo una incisión en el nido y aspirando los especímenes, para evitar daños a la población de la colonia, o al nido. Como manera adicional de monitorear los cambios en la estructuras de las colonias a través del tiempo, también colectan termitas en nidos donde han colectado previamente en 1992, 1994 y 1995 en varios sitios alrededor de la ciudad de Panamá, Gamboa y Galeta. El grupo planea también iniciar el monitoreo a largo plazo de nidos Nasutitermes corniger en Barro Colorado.
Los nidos serán fotografiados y se anotarán sus localizaciones a lo largo de los senderos en BCI, para poder regresar a ellos en los próximos años de este proyecto y aún después.

STRI records one of the hottest years in Panama
Steve Paton (left) STRI’s local weather data guru, reports that the period of Dec 2002 to Mar 2003 was the 5th most arid recorded in 75 years on BCI. In addition, this period was one of the warmest since records began in 1972. Only the major ENSO (El Niño) event of 1983 was warmer. Average mid-day relative humidity in March dipped below 60% (58.1%) at the Clearing Weather Station for the first time ever; still muggy for some, but significantly lower than the long term average of 67%. Relative humidity may have been even lower in 1983, but no relative humidity data were collected that year. Moisture availability such as soil moisture and run-off from the Lutz’s catchment are also near record low levels. This is an El Niño year, says Paton. On a global scale the event of 2002-2003 has been a relatively weak one–much less severe than the last event in 1997-98. However, for Panama, the current event has been made unusually strong by the presence of persistent pools of warm surface water near Panama’s Pacific and Atlantic coasts.
Lake level is not necessarily a good indicator of dry season severity. For those of us who remember the Gatun Lake in 1998, Paton explains that a very dry year in 1997, plus a very long and dry season in 1998, drew the lake down such bays along the Canal became fields of exposed stumps (see photo). This time, two very large storms in November and December left Gatun and Alajuela lakes fully charged at the beginning of dry season. Respectable rain showers this week across the Isthmus presage swarms of winged social insect queens and other lovely indicators that "winter" has
returned. And what of El Niño? Conditions in the Pacific are rapidly returning to neutral and are expected to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

El nivel de los lagos no es necesariamente un buen indicador de la severidad de la estación
seca. Para aquellos de nosotros que recordamos el Lago Gatún en 1998, Paton nos explica que la combinación de un año muy seco en 1997, y una estación seca muy larga en 1998 dejó las bahías a lo largo del Canal convertidas en campos de viejos troncos expuestos (ver foto del Lago Gatún, en 1998). Sin embargo, esta vez, dos grandes tormentas dejaron a los lagos Gatún y Alajuela totalmente cargados a
principios de la estación seca. Lluvias respetales esta semana a través del Istmo presagian enjambres de reinas de insectos alados y otros hermosos indicadores de que el “invierno” ha regresado. Y qué pasó con El Niño? Las condiciones en el Pacífico se están
neutralizando rápidamente otra vez, y se espera que se mantengan así en el futuro cercano.
