To determine the effect of the karoo, male behavioral data were compared in four different ways. If true, karoo females should receive increased fitness benefits as a result of the karoo. The four ways in which male behavior was compared to determine the effect of the karoo.

The purpose of the call is to communicate the healthy status of the female to the male. In this context, karooing is a way to assess the dominance of the male karoo. In turkeys, the syrinx consists of the last two tracheal rings and the first bronchial cartilage (Çevik-Demirkan et al. 2007).

This data set compares male behavior during the focus trial (five minutes starting with the first karoo) with male behavior of the same male on a. This data set compares male behavior of the eavesdropper during the focus trial (five minutes before and after the karoo) with male behavior of the same male on another day without the karoo (five minutes before and after female activity). 4) Behavior from the male karooed until the focal trial (AC) compared to behavior of the eavesdropping male during the focal trial (BK). Variation can also be seen in the duration, frequency and amplitude of the karoo (Figure 4).

Mean rates of male behavior did not show much variation between years, with the exception of pecking (Table 4 and Figure 5a). The mean fraction of time displayed by males in 2008 also did not change dramatically in 2009 (Table 4 and Figure 5b).

Average Fraction of Time Displaying by Males

In 2008 and 2009, strut rate and the percentage of time spent displaying decreased after hearing a karoo among focal males compared to non-focal males and among focal neighbors compared to non-focal neighbors in 2008 and 2009 ( Annex A1-3) I would have preferred to hear it in an attachment. Consequently, higher rates of bracing and higher percentages of time displayed were no more likely to occur in focal males or focal neighbors after hearing a karoo compared to non-focal males and non-focal neighbors in 2008 and 2009 (Appendix A1-3). In 2008 and 2009, neighbors eavesdropping after hearing a karoo had, on average, higher rates of support and aggression and displayed higher percentages of time.

Although stuttering (randomization test, p = 0.08) and aggression (randomization test, p = 0.49) were not more likely to increase among eavesdropping men in 2008 after hearing a karoo, these men did spend more time in 2008 with ostentation than themselves before they heard a karoo. karoo (randomization test, p = 0.0004). Focal neighbors showed lower rates of strutting and rates of time in 2008, and lower rates of strutting in 2009 before hearing a karoo, compared to non-focal neighbors (Appendix A2-3). Although aggression was higher in focal neighbors before hearing a karoo, compared to non-focal neighbors (Appendix A2-3), this was not more likely to occur (2008, randomization test, p-randomization test, p = 0.37).

Comparing the difference between focal neighbors before and after hearing a karoo with the difference between non-focal neighbors before and after the corresponding female activity showed that focal neighbors strutted at lower rates and used a less. Higher rates of strutting and aggression and higher percentage of time display were not more likely to occur in focal neighbors than non-focal neighbors (Appendix A5). However, focal males strutted at higher rates and spent a greater fraction of time displaying (Appendix A6) and were more likely to exhibit higher rates of strutting (2008 randomization test, p randomization test, p = 0.003) and.

Tabular and graphical representations of the behavior of the focal male compared to that of the focal neighbor after hearing the karoo are provided in Tables 5, 6 and 7 and Figures 6, 7 and 8. Karoo hens were twice as likely to karoo while calling as opposed to previous call, because only 4 out of 12 hens carooed prior to call (Appendix B1). Therefore, karoo hens were more likely to karoo multiple times to a single male rather than just once.

In 2008 and 2009, focal males pecked at higher rates and pushed wire at lower rates after hearing a karoo. On average, focal males exhibited higher frequencies of hacking and pushing cords after hearing a karoo than their eavesdropping neighbors in both 2008 and 2009 (Table 5-6 and Figure 6-7).

In 2009, after hearing a karoo, higher rates of pecking (randomization test, p = 0.07) and thrust wire (randomization test, p = 0.31) were no more likely to occur among focal males than.

Results: Displaying in 2008 and 2009 Males

Shorter first request latencies were no more likely for karooing than non-karooing females (Appendix B5, unpaired t-test, mean difference = −4.846, p = 0.91). Support based on male behavior for the healthy female hypothesis is similar to that of the urgency hypothesis because the predictions of male behavior are the same in both hypotheses. Karooing females were not likely to exhibit longer first request latencies compared to non-karooing females (unpaired t-test, mean difference = -4.846, p = 0.09).

Pushing the wire at the front of the cage by a male was also used to measure a male's eagerness to mate with a female. Five of the eleven push wire tests showed an average decrease in the number of push wires among men who heard a karoo, compared to men who did not. A common theme of the urgency and healthy feminine hypotheses is the additional expression of feminine receptivity through the karoo.

The other methods of testing male behavior for the effect of the karoo showed decreases in the average strut rate for males who heard a karoo compared to males who did not. Almost all of the methods for assessing male behavior show, on average, higher rates of aggression in males who heard a karoo compared to those who did not. The posture of the woman during the karoo was an area of ​​interest in this study because it indicates the level of commitment of a woman to a man.

Comparisons of the frequency of calls by karooing females to non-karooing females were used to assess female mating urgency. Longer latencies of the first call occurred among karooing females; however, this result is not statistically significant. This method compared the focal man's behavior after hearing a karoo with the behavior of his eavesdropping neighbor after hearing a karoo to measure how the auditory and visual aspects of it.

Consequently, any differences between the two males may not be due to the karoo effect. I suggest that the act of solicitation increases the effect of karoo on men's behavior. I suggest, however, that the purpose of karoo is most likely explained by a competing hypothesis.

These results suggest that there may be a synergistic effect of the auditory and visual aspects of the karoo. Overall, the results of this study point to the competition hypothesis as the most plausible explanation for the function of the karoo.
