Online learning is a learning method carried out by all educational institutions during Covid-19 pandemic aims to break the chain of spread of Covid-19. English language subjects at the time of online learning other than provides many conveniences, there are also many obstacles faced by students. It is causing various students’ perception. This study aims to investigate the university students’ perception on English online learning and students’ obstacles faced on English online learning during Covid-19 pandemic.

To explore the university students’ perception on English online learning, an online-based questionnaire and an offline- based interview were used as the methods of collecting the data. The instruments used in this research were questionnaire and semi-structured interview which was adapted from (Harisma &
Agustin, 2021) and (Erlina Sulistiyawati, 2020). The questionnaire used in this research was using Likert Scale, hence the data was analyzed by using theory derived from Sugiono (2016).

All in all, the students have a negative perception on English online learning during Covid-19 pandemic.
CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION
In the first chapter of this study, the researcher presents several points related to this study. Those points include the background of the study, research problem, objective of research, significance of research, scope and limitation of the research, and definition of key terms.
1.1
Background of The StudyPerception is an internal process that is recognize by individuals in selecting and regulating external stimuli (Suranto, 2011). These stimuli are captured by the sensations of person and the emotions and thoughts of person give the meaning of spontaneous stimuli. In perception, there are three several basic components related to perception, i.e. cognitive component, affective component, conative component.
(Allport, 1961). The cognitive component is related to knowledge, views, and beliefs. Then, the affective component relates to feelings or pleasure and displeasure. While the conative component is related to the tendency to act on the object of attitude. In case of education, students’ perception has important role in improving learning activities. Students’ perception of learning is the point of view or understanding of students on the material or information that has been received by students when learning activities take place.
In early 2020, several countries in the world, including Indonesia that change activities that impacted aspects of life caused by a virus called Covid-19. One of the activities that got the impact of the spread of Covid-19 virus was learning activity. The Covid-19 emergency period required lecturers and students to carry out the learning process from home which resulted in many changes such as location and learning methods. According to Simamora (2020), students and lecturers cannot meet in class, they must deal with changing conditions and develop alternative strategies, such as completing online learning Now, online learning becomes one of the most current and potential issues in Indonesia.
Online learning is an open and distributed learning system using educational tools, implemented via internet and network technology to facilitate learning and build knowledge through action and interaction (Dabbagh & Ritland, 2005). It means that online learning refers to technology-based environment in which students are required to have learning aids such as computers and internet connection. According to Stern ( 2018), online learning is education that takes place on the internet. It is often referred to as “a learning” among other terms. However, online leaning is just a type of
“distance learning”, the general term for any learning that takes place across distance and not in a traditional classroom. In brief, online learning is a learning process that connect students with their teachers to interact and communicate even in different place by using the internet that can be done anywhere and anytime depending on the needs of human resources.
Several previous studies related to using online learning have been carried out.
Agung et al., (2020) looking at students’ perceptions of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic at STIKP Pamane Talino, the result of the study explain that students were not ready with the new style in learning and their gadgets also did not support sudden high- technology changes. Only 54.5% of students can comprehend the material easily and some of them were more satisfied on offline class. A study by Jalilinia (2021) in Iran revealed that ungood results were shown during the online learning process. The majority of participants in the study had negative attitude towards online learning. On the other hand, in another study according to the results of research conducted by Hannay &Newvine (2006) show that the findings of this study indicate the most of the students showing a positive attitude towards online classes. Online learning was found to be useful for students who have many other personal commitments. There are some people who prefer online learning and there are also some people who like offline learning. So that these differences create perception for students towards online and offline learning.
University of Islam Malang has carried out online learning for two weeks in the beginning of March 2020, then due to worsening conditions and the increasing number of Covid-19 patients in Malang City, the campus must comply with government regulations to extend online learning until an indefinite time. Although learning activities were conducted through online class, students must be able to master the materials as good as when learning through offline class. In this condition, sometimes
students do some class activities individually. Thus, it made the researcher interested to explore the university student’s perception on English online learning.
Regarding to the facts above, the researcher want to study further in the form of research under the tittle “University Students’ Perception on English Online Learning during Covid-19 Pandemic”. The uniqueness of this study compared to several previous studies could be seen from the research method. Where in this study, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive approach, while previous research used quantitative research. Not only that, the researcher escalated the participants into a university level non-English students major.
1.2
Research ProblemBased on the discussion above, the problem in this study is formulated as follows:

1.5
Scope and Limitation of The ResearchThe scope of this research is focused on the second semester of non-English major UNISMA. Then the limitation of this research is limited participants. Not only that, since the researcher was difficult to observe and to collect the data directly at UNISMA due to the Covid-19, the researcher used WhatsApp as a means to ask the subjects to fill out the questionnaires. Furthermore, in this session, the researcher conducted the offline-based interview.
1.6
Definition of Key TermsIn order to avoid misunderstanding or get some perception of the terms used in the study, the following definition are given:
1. Students’ perception
In this study, students’ perception includes students’ opinions and responses towards students’ motivation in learning English through online learning, the effectiveness of online learning, accessibility, the lecturer’s role in opening and
answering questions, materials delivery, understanding the material, and motivation to do assignment.
2. Online Learning
Online learning is a learning that is done through the internet. Where the students and lecturers’ position are in different place. This research study will discuss about university students’ perceptions on English online learning in the second semester of non- English major UNISMA
CHAPTER V
CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS
This chapter would present some conclusions and suggestions based on the findings and the discussions in the previous chapter.
5.1 Conclusions
Related to the findings and discussions presented in previous chapter. Then, the researcher gives several conclusions regarding to this research as follows. The result of this study showed two main points of student perception. First, it was about students’
perception on English online learning during covid-19 pandemic. First, the majority of students showed negative perception on English online learning and students’ opinions about online learning are considered less effective. Second, it was about the obstacles faced by students in online learning. The obstacles faced by students on English online learning consist of unstable internet networks, expensive internet quota prices, students’ lack of understanding material, and the lack of seriousness of students in learning during online learning.
5.2 Suggestions
Based on the research that had done, there are several suggestions that researcher gives as below:
1. For the students and lecturer: it was suggested to be more sensitive what the importance of evaluating online learning preparation both lecturers and students. Because, online learning implemented during covid-19 pandemic generally is still difficult. Not only that, the importance of motivation in the learning process, teaching materials, implementation, and evaluation of problems faced by lecturers and students in order to increase their understanding during online learning.
2. For other researchers: it was suggested to other researchers will be able to conduct research using a more in-depth research problems related to online learning process.
3. For Institutions
Institutions should pay attention to the obstacles faced by students in the implementation of English online learning to find solutions, so that students can study well even though they study at home.
