GENERAL INFORMATION

The entire hospital consists of members of the teaching staff of the Faculty of Medicine. In addition to the clinical facilities offered by the departments and clinics of the University Hospital, the Faculty of Medicine has clinical privileges. A year later, the Nashville Academy of Medicine donated to the school the private library of Dr.

Early in the first semester, these students are given a short orientation period on the arrangement and use of the Library. This lectureship was founded in 1947 by the members of the then second year class.

ADMISSION

The Medical College Admission Test must be taken during the year prior to applying for admission to the Medical School. School records, together with the recommendations and the result made in this exam, will be used by the Admissions Committee in reviewing applications for admission to the School of Medicine. This deposit is credited for the payment of the first tuition and in case the student does not matriculate, it is not returned.

Application forms may be obtained by applying to the Registrar, School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, Nashville 5, Tennessee. A check or money order for $10, payable to the School of Medicine, Vanderbilt University, must accompany each application when submitted. Applications for advanced standing must be submitted according to the procedure described for admission to the freshman class, and acceptable applicants must make the same deposit of $50. Applicants must provide acceptable evidence that they have satisfactorily completed the entry requirements in an accredited.

For their own and others' protection against communicable diseases, all new students are expected to have a chest X-ray within a twelve-month period prior to admission to the University and a smallpox vaccination within the previous three years. . Daily care of the sick: The Student Health Service Office is maintained for ill students who are confined to bed. Hospital care: A student who is seriously ill can be admitted to the hospital authorized by the Student Health Service.

This includes the services of a private physician or surgeon paid by the student for professional services. Special medicine, special services such as nursing care, X-ray examination, special laboratory tests and referrals to specialist doctors are paid for by the student. The plan is designed to supplement the Student Health Service and provides hospital, surgical and inpatient services.

REGULATIONS

They must complete at least four years of study as matriculating medical students, unless this requirement is waived at the discretion of the school based on proof that they have satisfactorily completed equivalent studies. They must have successfully completed all mandatory subjects of the medical curriculum, pass all prescribed exams and be free of debt to the university. Upon completion of the four-year course, any student who meets these requirements will be recommended for the title of Doctor of Medicine.

All second year students must take Part I and all fourth year students must take Part II of the National Board Examinations. Students who engage in outside work must report such activity at the beginning of the school year or at any time during the school year that such work is undertaken. This medal is awarded to the student in the graduating class of any school of the university who has achieved the highest average in scholarship during four consecutive years of study.

No more than one-fifth of the students in the fourth-year class are eligible for membership, and only one-half of the number of eligible students may be selected for membership during the latter half of their third year. Beauchamp, in memory of her husband, who was for many years superintendent of the Central State Hospital in Nashville, is awarded to the student who shows the greatest progress in neurology and psychiatry, and who is otherwise worthy and deserving. This award, established in 1945 by the Borden Company Foundation, Inc., gives $500 annually to the person 10 the graduating class of the School of Medicine who, during any year while enrolled in the School, has performed the most meritorious bachelor's research in the medical field.

Candidates for the award must apply to the Dean of the School of Medicine for consideration. The author of the first place paper will receive $100 and the author of the second place paper, $50. The choice of the papers is decided by the Dean or by a committee appointed by him.

EXPENSES

All students are required to provide themselves with hemocytometers, hemoglobinometers and ophthalmoscopes before the beginning of the second quarter of the second year. Vanderbilt University School of Medicine is pleased to announce that a number of scholarships and loans are available to worthy applicants. Information and application forms can be obtained from the Committee for Scholarships and Scholarships or from the Dean of Medical Students.

Rooms may be occupied on the day before the opening of the semester and through the last day of the semester. Basic furniture is provided by the University, and the resident is responsible for the condition of both furniture and room, and is responsible for all damages. Students who withdraw from the University for any reason, or who are dismissed or requested to do so.

Rooms for men can be reserved by applying to the office of the Dean of Men; rooms for women, by application to the office of the Dean of Women. Refund of the room booking deposit will be considered if the cause for the request is judged to be a matter beyond the applicant's control and if the request is received, in writing, by 1 July. A list of rooms and apartments for rent near campus is maintained in the office of the Dean of Men.

Students joining prior to the semester must register with the Office of the Director of Food Services. Students are reminded that parking spaces are not available for all registered cars and are urged to park off campus during the school year.

PLAN OF INSTRUCTION

Students are given an understanding of the dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship and of the responsibilities inherent in this interpersonal relationship. Vanderbilt University School of Medicine was one of the original medical schools to conduct a program of military and disaster medicine under the National Defense Medical Education Plan. In addition, aspects of military medicine are emphasized at appropriate places in the vanous courses.

These courses are conducted under the supervision of the Director of Post Graduate Studies and the Head of the concerned department. The costs of special and intensive courses are decided by the dean and the director of postgraduate studies in cooperation with the head of the department where the classes are held. 10 regular courses or special elective courses, if such students are accepted by the heads of the respective departments and are enrolled in the Graduate School of the University.

Graduate work in the medical sciences is arranged by the faculty of the Graduate School. Candidates for the Master of Science in Audiology and Speech Pathology degree may work in this field at the Bill Wilkerson Hearing and Speech Center and the School of Medicine. Graduate work in this division is regulated by the faculty of the School of Medicine.

COURSES OF STUDY

ELECTIVE COURSES IN SURGERY

In this course, students are taught the theories and techniques of treating surgical wounds. This instruction is provided weekly by members of the orthopedic surgery staff during formal ward rounds to the students serving as clinical clerks on the wards, and in weekly seminars in the outpatient clinic. All students are subject to the Honor Code and fall under the jurisdiction of the Honor Council.

The fees give all students the privilege of the health service provided by the University. Emphasis on basic physiological principles of speech production and psycho-acoustics of hearing. The course, with the approval of the Division, may also be taken for credit hours for topics unrelated to the thesis.

A study of the theory and practice of hearing measurement with emphasis on basic pure tone and speech audiometry, including instrumentation. A consideration of the theories and problems encountered in the development of speech and language in acoustically impaired children. A consideration of the impact of hearing impairment on the pre-school child, the school-going child and the adult.

Research studies in the field of the social, motor, intellectual and psychological development of the individual, and the role of the deaf person in contemporary society. A review of the important research in the field of stuttering, with an emphasis on etiologies and therapies. A study of the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of speech and language disorders associated with neuropathologies, structural abnormalities, and physiological dysfunction.
