Johnson says he and his de facto Coaches of the Year evaluate the returners and sign. With four of the previous seven seasons each ending with nine losses that devastated fans, a little levity was welcome.
Bowled Over
Well, actually, before he embarks on that trek, he first sets the record straight for the Coach of the Year honor bestowed upon him by his conference peers at the conclusion of the 2008 season. Head coach Bobby Johnson was named SEC Coach of the Year, an honor he earned shared with Alabama's Nick Saban and Ole Miss' Houston Nutt. Other season standouts: Punter Brett Upson was named Music City Bowl Most Valuable Player for consistently beating Boston. College Eagles deep in their own territory.

Moore was named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press and first-team All-SEC on defense. Marve was one of only four unanimous selections, and the first Commodore to be chosen unanimously since Kwane Doster was named Freshman of the Year in 2002. The high-profile reorganization of the athletics department that Vanderbilt completed in 2003 with the nobles. the ambition to fully integrate athletes into the student body may have been controversial at the time, but by and large the reorganization has been considered a success.

Four Commodores earned Freshman All-SEC honors: linebacker Chris Marve, tight end Brandon Barden, defensive tackle T.J. The administration] wants you to win, but they want you to win the right way, with the right kind of student-athletes," Johnson says. "That makes working here a lot of fun."

Under the terms of the law, the government would pay all nursing school costs plus a small stipend. Wearing their snappy cadet uniforms – gray wool with brass buttons, red epaulettes and handy berets – the nurses headed to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, in one of the school's black Fords. One of the girls was quick enough to turn the wheel, and the car was stopped by a fence post.
A Few Good Women
In 1941, when the United States faced an acute shortage as it prepared to enter World War II, the Vanderbilt School of Nursing became one of 88 schools that the U.S. received. By then, the Vanderbilt School of Nursing had expanded its public health program and entered into an agreement with the Veterans Administration hospital in Murfreesboro to develop its psychiatric nursing program. The Vanderbilt School of Nursing would continue to evolve in the post-war years, offering a new four-year B.S.N.

The warm plasma mantle is a rarefied region that begins on the night side of the planet and wraps toward the day side, but then gradually fades on the noon side. Tom Moore and Barbara Giles of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and Dominique Delcourt of the Center d'etude des Environments Terrestre et Planetaires, Observatoire de Saint-Maur in France – used satellite observations to measure the properties of the ions at different locations in the magnetosphere. An important part of their analysis was a computer program developed by Delcourt that can predict how ions move in the earth's magnetic field.
Obama Effect”
It is powered by low-energy charged particles that rise into space above the Earth's poles, are carried behind Earth in its magnetic tail, but are then swung around 180 degrees by a twist in the magnetic fields that pushes the particles back toward Earth in a region. called "plasma sheet". When the researchers applied this computer code to satellite observations, several patterns became clear for the first time. One was predicting how ions could move up from the ionosphere to form the warm plasma mantle.

They had a national impact on learning disabilities,” says Craig Kennedy, chair of Peabody's Department of Special Education. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), “Learning disabilities are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do math. These statistics add up to a public health challenge, according to the NIH, which funds learning disability research by the Fuchses and other investigators.

As researchers at the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research in Human Development, the Fuchses—along with colleague Donald Compton, associate professor of special education—led research on a number of successful teaching strategies. Typically, about 20 percent of students in the general population are identified as at-risk. All but about 5 percent of students respond to the special help they receive in small group classes.

But being in these situations has also caused some of the most difficult times in my own life. Our first lesson in aviation medicine was how to open the door of the plane,” Morris says with a laugh. Morris Jr., professor of surgery and director of the Division of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care.
It’s like practicing intensive-care
As a flight nurse, you really feel like you're doing something that matters," says Yeatman. The following year, Morris joined the faculty, beginning his tenure a few weeks early to coincide with the arrival of the medical center's first helicopter. The man is quickly loaded into the back of LifeFlight 1 for the flight to Vanderbilt University Hospital, arriving at the Vanderbilt port at 2:23 p.m., where his lengthy hospitalization begins.
A former LifeFlight flight nurse with more than 1,000 patient transports under her belt, Yeatman rose through the ranks to serve as its program director since 2003. The move was part of a larger strategy by the medical center to build and brand top-tier trauma surgery and emergency medicine programs. Unconscious and intubated, the patient is manually ventilated by EMS personnel on the scene.
Kevin High, who has been with LifeFlight since 1993 and now serves as head of the trauma program, agrees. The hardest part of Yeatman's job, she says, is "being ahead of the curve and feeling like I'm proactive and not reactive. The opening of the skygate in December 2000 solved several of LifeFlight's logistical problems, bringing together several parts of the program to one place.

The opening of the airport in December 2000 solved some of LifeFlight's logistical issues, finally bringing together in one place several parts of the program. below the landing pad sit the flight crew quarters and program administrative offices. JANUS
The city prides itself on attracting new industry and calls itself the 'Gateway to the New South'. But Clarksville is also a place that “represents the perfect circle of classical studies,” says Professor Barbara Tsakirgis, chair of Vanderbilt's Department of Classical Studies. Over the years that I have been at Vanderbilt, we have had a steady stream of high school students from Clarksville come to us.”
RISING
But here in the South, and especially in Tennessee, there was less of that pressure,” says Tsakirgis. Beginning in the 1980s, enrollment in classical studies came gradually and grew each year at Vanderbilt. I stayed in the field, partly because I saw great opportunities to reshape our awareness of women's history.”
MANNA FALLS on
Some volunteers sign up to work through Alternative Spring Break, arriving in groups of college students who work for a week under the direction of the Manna Project. Eakin's remarks hint at one of the dramas of Project Manna's story: the theme of transformation. Today, Project Manna is deepening its roots in Latin America, spreading its vision throughout the US.
Manna Goes Viral
The beginnings of the Manna Project grew out of one such fateful, shocking encounter of Vanderbilt students with the larger world. Another theme expressed by volunteers is the humbling feeling of facing the social issues that arise in the work undertaken for the Manna Project. Nevertheless, another theme resonates among the Manna Project alumni: an unexpected self-discovery regarding their sense of vocabulary.

Pollster John Zogby calls today's demographic of 19- to 29-year-olds "First Globals"—the first generation truly at home with global perspectives. We hope that an old attitude is changing – the division of service work and work in the ‘real world.’ They do not need to be separated. Lead singer Lee says his Vanderbilt professors couldn't have been more accommodating to their busy music schedule, calling the experience "the best of both worlds." Nielson recently told an academic advisor that he was part of the reason they had moved into a position where success was possible.
Music
Hailing from rural Georgia and North Carolina respectively, Lee and Nielson met at boarding school in the 1990s, where they began playing music together and set their sights on a record deal. The band members' post-grad work consisted of relentless touring and launching an underground NASCAR circuit hit about Dale Earnhardt. There was a point where when we got a hotel, it was a $19 hotel and all five of us went into the room,” says Nielson, the band's principal songwriter. “But when you do that and you finally get to this place [of success], you realize how special that was: six years of touring America together and the community that brings.”

For the first week I was in the country, I maintained my own panicky, paranoid vigilance. Most of my work at Vanderbilt involved studying Islam, Arabic culture and politics, and the Arabic language. Iraq is recovering, although the scars of years of poverty and destruction remain.

Green Planet Blues
At this point, however, I had yet to experience the traditional sacred harp singing at full volume. The list is run by a singer from Minnesota and the site is run by a singer from California. indeed, it was a great internet revelation that the Sacred Harp network is by no means limited to the Deep South. Best of all, Sacred Harp is not a closed subculture, but open to anyone who wants it.
MAKE BIG
Here, however, a revolutionary new development was opening up the Sacred Harp network to me and many others: the Internet. As it happened, for about 20 years, completely under my radar, there had been a great revival of the Sacred Harp. Not that the Sacred Harp is likely to become "popular", though; the music and lyrics remain their often forbidden selves, except for the most popular music.
POSSIBILITIES HAPPEN
I quickly learned that a total stranger can show up to a sacred harp, and if he comes prepared to sing and shows respect for the tradition and those who have carried it forward, he will be welcomed with open arms. Of all the surviving forms of tone singing, the Sacred Harp is the most widespread and vital. Sacred Harpsang may be of a primarily rural-based style, but it is hardly easy to learn.
Sweet Affliction
It lay at the intersection of several of my personal involvements: the history and culture of the South, religion and choral singing. Unlike most standard hymnbooks, form-note tonebooks are wider than they are long, and are laid out with each of the three or four parts on a separate stave. Singers usually begin by "singing the forms." Beginners (and for that matter, veterans with a tongue) can fake it, but learn the four note shapes - a triangle (fa), a circle (sol), a square (la) and a diamond (mi) - and their relationship to each other in the scale is critical to understanding the structure of the music.
