COMPARISON ANALYSIS OF SPELLING MISTAKES ON DETIKCOM AND KOMPAS.COM By

Abstract: The purposes of this study are: 1) To find out whether there are spelling mistakes in Detikcom and Kompas.com online newspapers. 2) To find out what types of spelling mistakes are often found in Detikcom and Kompas.com online newspapers. 3) To compare which online newspaper has fewer spelling mistakes. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method with document analysis instruments and simak-catat technique. It can be concluded that: 1) There were 60 spelling mistakes in 40 news headlines from Detikcom and 37 spelling mistakes in 40 news headlines from Kompas.com. 2) Italicization mistakes are often found in Detikcom with as many as 45 mistakes, while word writing mistakes are often found in Kompas.com with as many as 17 mistakes. 3) Kompas.com has fewer spelling mistakes than Detikcom in the March-April 2023 edition.

INTRODUCTION

Now that we live in a digital age, reading the news on a smartphone is a convenient option. Today, there are numerous online newspapers that provide factual information.

Still, this trend cannot prevent human mistakes in the process of writing the news, particularly in the spelling of words. It can ruin the word’s meaning and the author’s intention in delivering the news. It can also decrease readers' interest in reading the newspaper.

According to Warnisa et al. (2020), they found out there were 444 spelling mistakes in Serambi Indonesia’s headline news in the January 2020 edition, such as the use of letters, writing words, use of punctuation marks, and writing absorption words. Winata (2019) found that there are spelling mistakes on Detik.com, such as letters, words, and punctuation marks. Alfiyani et al. (2020) said there are 26 mistakes in writing words and numbers, using capital letters, commas, periods, colons, and particles in Jawa Pos Radar Solo newspaper. Next, Hidayat et al. (2021) found that there are some mistakes in Detik Finance and Detik News, such as using italics, misspelling of words, and using capitalization mistakes. Besides, word choice mistakes are also frequently found in the writing of Detik Finance and Detik News headlines. Rizki and Sutrisna (2021) said that there are some mistakes in the use of slashes, colons, dashes, dots and in the writing of names and titles in

Radar Cirebon 22 of the July 2020 edition.

Furthermore, Talitha et al. (2022) examine language mistakes in Tribunnews.com's January 2021 to March 2021 editions. Based on their results, language mistakes on Tribunnews.com consist of the use of letters, italics, basic words, abbreviations, acronyms, punctuation, and word writing. Next, Amalia and Nurhayani (2022) found that language mistakes in the TvOneNews.com October 2022 edition were the use of acronyms, spelling, using affixes and conjunctions, and non-basic word mistakes. According to Andiyanti et al.

(2022), there are some mistakes in the Radar Mandalika July 2020 edition, such as spelling, morphology, syntax, and lexicon mistakes. Further, Sari et al. (2022) want to find out how spelling mistakes in the Radar Bengkulu newspaper are formed and what factors influence the occurrence of spelling mistakes. They found out there were 18 spelling mistakes. The factors that affect spelling mistakes in the newspaper are the author’s inaccuracy and the existence of time constraints. Last, Jaya and Oktavia (2021) said that there are many language mistakes found in online news media, such as the use of syntax, spelling mistakes, non-basic word mistakes, preposition mistakes, typos, the use of capital letters, and mistakes in writing currency.

The difference between this study and previous studies lies in the research subject.

Comparison of language mistakes between two online newspapers is still rarely researched out there. The researcher intends to compare and analyze two well-known online newspapers to find out which one has the fewest language mistakes.

According to Hardi (2015), newspapers, or what can be called journalism, are very influential sources of information in life to find out about the latest news. Apart from print- out newspapers, nowadays they can also be found in online media. Romli (2012) says that online journalism, or cyber journalism, is the process of conveying information using the internet or websites. It can be said that cyber journalism is the process of delivering news through online media.

In cyber journalism, language is needed to convey the news to the audience.

Noermanzah (2019) argues that language as a communication medium is a row of sounds that are systemic, in the form of symbols, arbitrary, meaningful, conventional, unique, universal, productive, varied, dynamic, humane, and social interaction ways that replace an individual in stating or expressing something to the interlocutor in a social group as a way to communicate and become the identity of the speaker. It can be concluded that language is the most effective form of communication between humans because it is conventional and universal.

There are still a lot of linguistic mistakes being made nowadays, particularly spelling mistakes. One of them is incorrect punctuation (Sugono, 2009). It might be argued that there are numerous grammatical mistakes in online media. The causes of language errors can be divided into two categories: mistakes and errors. The mistake is a deviation brought on by things like poor memory, pronouncing words incorrectly, sprains, exhaustion, mental stress, and more (Parera in Suryaningsi, 2018). Because the condition that leads to these errors may be altered, they won't happen repeatedly. Errors are regular, systematic departures from the linguistic system that are acquired at a certain level (Suryaningsi, 2018).

Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia (PUEBI) and Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia

(KBBI) are the linguistic norms in Indonesian used as a guide to identify a proper or improper form of speech. There are four requirements for spelling according to Pedoman Umum Ejaan Bahasa Indonesia (2016), including the usage of letters, writing words, using punctuation, and writing absorption elements. Setyawati (2010) states that there are some mistakes in the application of PUEBI, including: (a) incorrect capitalization; (b) incorrect italicization; (c) incorrect word writing; (d) incorrect word cutting; (e) incorrect spellings of number symbols; (f) incorrect spellings of absorption elements; and (g) incorrect punctuation usage. While in the PUEBI, there are fifteen types of punctuation marks, such as: full stop (.), comma (,), semicolon (;), colon (:), hyphen (-), dashes ( – ), question marks (?), exclamation points (!), ellipsis marks (…), quotation marks (“ “), single quotation marks (' '), parentheses (( )), square brackets ([ ]), slash (/), and abbreviation sign or apostrophe (').

Online media are frequently cited by the public as a model for proper language usage.

However, it's easy to find linguistic mistakes on online media. The researcher chose this topic since it is still uncommon to conduct research on the comparison of linguistic mistakes between two online publications. Detikcom and Kompas.com were also picked as comparison points since they are well-known among Indonesians as reliable and trustworthy online newspapers.

Based on the explanation above, the researcher determined that the research problems are:

1. Are there any spelling mistakes in both Detikcom and Kompas.com online newspapers?

2. What types of spelling mistakes are often found in both Detikcom and Kompas.com online newspapers?

3. Who has the fewest spelling mistakes?

METHODS

This study used qualitative and descriptive methods with a document analysis instrument. Saryono (2010) states that qualitative research is used to investigate, find, describe, and explain the qualities or features of social influence that cannot be explained, measured, or described through a quantitative approach. Document analysis is a systematic procedure for reviewing or evaluating documents, both printed and electronic (computer- based and Internet-transmitted) (Bowen, 2009).

Besides, data collection techniques are also used as instruments in this study. Data collection techniques are used to collect research data from data sources (subjects and samples) (Iryana & Kawasati, 2019). Therefore, the data collection technique used in this study was the simak-and-catat technique. Sudaryanto (1993) states that the simak technique is the provision of data by reading and focusing on the language use of the data.

Mahsun (2012) stated that the catat technique was an advanced technique that was carried out when applying the simak method by taking notes from what was read.

By reading several news articles from Detikcom and Kompas.com March-April 2023 edition, researchers used the simak-catat approach to analyze specific documents. The researchers then made a note of any spelling mistakes they discovered in the news. They have read 80 news titles, 40 of which came from Detikcom and Kompas.com. The news was read in a variety of categories, including national, regional, international, sports, politics,

entertainment, business, health, and science. It was discovered that 15 news titles with spelling mistakes were from Detikcom, while 25 titles were from Kompas.com.

RESULT AND DISCUSSIONS

Language usage still includes a lot of mistakes, particularly in matters of spelling.

Punctuation mistakes are among them (Sugono, 2009). Setyawati (2010) states that there are some mistakes in the application of PUEBI, including: (a) incorrect capitalization; (b) incorrect italicization; (c) incorrect word writing; (d) incorrect word cutting; (e) incorrect spellings of number symbols; (f) incorrect spellings of absorption elements; and (g) incorrect punctuation marks. In the PUEBI, there are fifteen types of punctuation marks, such as: full stop (.), comma (,), semicolon (;), colon (:), hyphen (-), dashes ( – ), question marks (?), exclamation points (!), ellipsis marks (…), quotation marks (“ “), single quotation marks (' '), parentheses (( )), square brackets ([ ]), slash (/), and abbreviation sign or apostrophe (').

Previous studies stated by Nurohmah (2021) found 522 spelling mistakes in the Sinar Pagi online newspaper. The most common type of mistake was incorrect capitalization. Warnisa et al. (2020) also found out there were 444 spelling mistakes in Serambi Indonesia’s headline news, such as the use of letters, writing words, use of punctuation marks, and writing absorption words. It can be said that language mistakes are still often found in various online newspapers.

However, Sari et al. (2022) discovered that the Radar Bengkulu newspaper only contained nineteen mistakes in spelling. According to Apriliana et al. (2020), six news titles in the Jabar Tribunnews contained fifteen misspellings. Only eight spelling mistakes were also discovered in three news titles for Solopos (Prasetya et al. in 2022). Additionally, it can be said that the number of linguistic mistakes—particularly spelling mistakes—in various online newspapers was still within normal ranges.

RESULTS

Based on the results of a comparative analysis of spelling mistakes on Detikcom and Kompas.com, several mistakes were found by the researchers.

In PUEBI, there is a provision that italics are used to write words or expressions in regional or foreign languages. From the excerpt of Detikcom's March 30th, 2023 edition, there are some mistakes in the use of italics. The words "cafe", "modern", and "real estate"

come from foreign languages, so they must be written in italics.

From the excerpt of the April 2nd edition of the news with the title "Mahfud Md Blak-Blakan Ungkap Dilema Jokowi soal Host Pildun U-20", the writing of "sepakbola" is incorrect. In KBBI, the correct spelling is "sepak bola" using spaces. In addition, based on PUEBI, the writing of "host" should be italicized because the word comes from a foreign language that is not found in the KBBI. The writing of "Insyaallah" in this news is also incorrect because, according to the KBBI, the correct writing is "insya Allah".

In the news with the title "Suga BTS Debut Solo Lewat Album D-DAY, Rilis 21 April", there are several mistakes in the use of italics. Many words from foreign languages are found, such as "chapter", "member", "mixtape", "single", and "road trip", which should be italicized based on PUEBI.

In the April 3rd, 2023 edition of the news with the title "Ivan Gunawan Tunda Kunjungan ke Masjid Miliknya di Uganda", several language mistakes were found. First, there was a mistake in the writing of the word "kesibukkan". In KBBI, the word should be written as "kesibukan". Furthermore, in the sentence "Aku insyaallah ke Uganda jadinya Idul Adha. Karena roadshow ini (bisnis Mandjha Hijab) sampai mendekati lebaran. Jadi selesai ramadan, ya Idul Adha di sana," kata Ivan Gunawan ditemui di Depok, Jawa Barat", several mistakes were found. The correct spelling of "insyaallah", according to KBBI, is

"insya Allah". The word "roadshow" should be italicized because it comes from a foreign language. Meanwhile, "lebaran" and "ramadan" are holiday and month names that, according to KBBI, should begin with a capital letter. Finally, the writing of the word

"teraweh" in the sentence "Bahkan sudah dipakai untuk beribadah seperti teraweh dan buka bersama", is incorrect because, according to the KBBI, the correct writing is

"tarawih".

Italicization mistakes were also found in the title "Aming: Saya Tetap Asyik Meski Sudah Seperti Ini", which was published on April 3rd, 2023. The foreign-derived words in the news are "flexing", "humble", and "posting". According to PUEBI, these words should be written in italics.

Furthermore, in the April 5th, 2023 edition of the news article "MRT Jakarta Phase 4

Fatmawati-Kp. Rambutan Extended to Taman Mini", two types of mistakes were found. The writing of several sentences from foreign languages such as "feasibility study", "fully underground", "financing", "bidding", "design", and "groundbreaking" should be written using italics as regulated in PUEBI. In addition, the word "kerjasama" based on KBBI should be written with spaces, namely "kerja sama".

In the news article with the title "Puluhan Miliar untuk Lukas Enembe Bangun Hotel Terungkap di Dakwaan", published on April 5th, 2023, the word "fee" was not written in italics as it should refer to PUEBI. There were also mistakes in the numeric symbols spelling, precisely in the quote: "Rijatono didakwa menyuap Lukas Enembe sebesar Rp 35,4 miliar yang mana sebagian besarnya diberikan dalam bentuk pembangunan dan renovasi aset-aset Lukas Enembe, termasuk sebuah hotel di Papua." According to PUEBI, the writing of Rp as a currency symbol should not be separated by spaces, so the correct writing is Rp35.4 billion.

Next, spelling mistakes were found in "Hikmahbudhi Desak RUU Perampasan Aset Segera Disahkan!" published on April 5th, 2023. In the quote, "Yang dapat menjadi solusi atas permasalahan tindak pidana ekonomi tersebut, perampasan aset atau pemiskinan atas tindak pidana korupsi, TPPU, penipuan, dan pidana lainnya yang bermotif ekonomi. Perlu perundang-undangan sendiri sehingga kerugian negara dapat di kembali dan keadilan dapat ditegakkan," ujar Wiryawan". Furthermore, in the April 17th edition of 2023 with the title "5 Drama Korea Bertema Survival, Terbaru Duty After School", several foreign language words were found that did not use italics as written in PUEBI. These words include "survival", "thriller genre", "streaming platform", and "part". Not only that, in the April 18th, 2023 edition of the news entitled "Profil Moon Sang Min, Pemeran Wang Tae Man di Duty After School", italicization mistakes were also found in the words "survival-school", "lookbook", and

"brand".

Another mistake was found in the quote: "Gerhana Matahari yang InshaAllah akan terjadi pada hari Kamis, tanggal 20 April 2023 mendatang, adalah tanda jika Bulan Ramadan telah habis setelah gerhana tersebut selesai. Akan tetapi kita tetap harus menyelesaikan puasa sampai waktu Magrib tiba. Dan dimalam tersebut selepas Magrib telah memasuki Bulan Baru, 1 Syawal 1444 Hijriah," demikian tulis pemilik akun tersebut,"

which comes from "BRIN soal Viral Gerhana Matahari Tanda Masuk Syawal: Info Menyesatkan". Referring to the KBBI, the correct spelling of "InshaAllah" is "insya Allah".

Meanwhile, the writing of "dimalam" is incorrect because, according to PUEBI, prepositions di, ke, dari must be written separately from the word that follows. So the correct spelling is

"di malam".

In the April 25th, 2023 edition of the news with the title "Jokowi Minta Tunda Balik Mudik, ASN Bisa Perpanjang Cuti-WFH Seizin Atasan", italicization mistakes were found in the writing of the words "work from home", "work from anywhere", and "online"

because the three words came from foreign languages, which according to PUEBI must be written using italics. Similarly, in the news article "Ternyata Ini Penyebab Puncak Bogor Macet Horor" that was published on the same date, the word "one way" has also not been italicized.

Finally, in the April 26th edition of 2023, two news headlines were detected to have spelling mistakes. There are three mistakes in "Libur Lebaran Selesai, Stasiun Manggarai Kembali Dipadati Penumpang". Referring to the KBBI, the word "lebaran" should begin with a capital letter. In addition, the words "tap-in" and "exit" referring to PUEBI should be italicized because both words come from foreign languages. In the news titled "Akhirnya!

Satu Akun WhatsApp Kini Bisa Dipakai di 2 HP Sekaligus", there are also italicization mistakes on words that come from foreign languages. Words that have not been italicized are "multi-device", "chat", "end-to-end", "log out", "download", and "scan". In addition, a mistake was found in writing the word "sudut" in the sentence "Buka aplikasi WhatsApp di HP pertama kalian lalu buka menu titik tiga di sudur kanan atas dan pilih opsi 'Perangkat tertaut'".

Capitalization mistakes.

In the March 31st, 2023 edition of the news titled "Bansos Beras Mulai Disalurkan Bertahap Akhir Maret 2023", a mistake was found in the writing of numeric symbols. In the sentence "Dari rencana 34.00p ton saat ini sudah siap 30.000 ton..." the news writer mistakenly wrote 34.000 tons.

Similarly, in the news quote with the title "Trump Akan Menyerahkan Diri Hari Ini, Terbang dari Florida ke New York", the news writer mistakenly wrote the word

"menyampaikan" to "menuampaikan". Sari et al. (2022) stated in their study that the factors that affect spelling mistakes in the newspaper are the author's inaccuracy and the existence of time constraints. In addition, the writer also overused period punctuation at the end of the sentence.

In the news titled "Istri Pejabat Dishub DKI Juga Bakal Diperiksa Inspektorat, Imbas Ulahnya Sendiri yang Hobi Pamer Kekayaan", published on April 3rd, 2023, two spelling mistakes were found. According to PUEBI, the word "flexing", which comes from a foreign language, should be written in italics. In the next quote, the phrase "terseretdalam" should be separated by a space. According to KBBI, a phrase is a combination of two or more words that are non-predicative. The words "terseret" and "dalam", although they have become

phrases, are still two different words that must be separated using space.

Furthermore, in the news citation derived from the title "Praveen/Melati Kalah di Final Spain Masters 2023, Keraguan Jadi Kendala", there is a mistake in writing the word.

Looking at the context, the author should have written the words "laman PB Djarum"

instead of "lama PB Djarum".

Mistakes in the use of italics were found in the news titled "Jadwal dan Lokasi Penukaran Uang Baru di Medan untuk Lebaran 2023". The word "online" should be written in italics, referring to PUEBI. In addition, according to KBBI, the word "Ramadan" should be written as "Ramadan". Misspellings of “Ramadan” were also found in news excerpts titled

"Resep Kolak Pisang Ketan Durian, Kreasi Takjil Buka Puasa" and "Sepi Pendonor, Stok Kantong Darah di Kota Bekasi Menipis Saat Ramadhan".

In the news excerpt entitled "Polisi Gerebek Rumah Mewah di Duren Sawit, Warga Kaget Ternyata di Dalamnya Ada 20 Orang Diduga WNA" above, "debt collector" should be written in italics. Besides, according to PUEBI, single quotation marks are used to enclose quotations contained in other quotations. In the news quote above, single quotation marks should also be closed with single quotation marks before closing the quote with quotation marks.

In the news quotation titled "12 Cara Mengusir Nyamuk yang Berdengung di Telinga," there is a mistake in the writing of the word. In the KBBI, the correct spelling is

"menggigit" not "mengingit".

Italicization mistakes were detected again in the April 5th, 2023 edition of the news with the headline "Usai Ramai Curhatan Food Vlogger Magdalena, Chef Arnold: Jangan Ngemis Makan Gratis, Jangan Ngemis Minta Review". The words "food vlogger", "food beverage", "podcast", "viral", and "followers", which come from foreign languages, have not been written in italics, as required by PUEBI.

There are word-writing mistakes in the news excerpt with its title "Linda Pujiastuti:

Penderitaan Saya Bermula Saat Menghubungi Teddy Minahasa", published on April 5th, 2023, which stated, "Pada saat itu, lanjut Linda, dia dan Teddy melakukan ekspedis untuk menggagalkan peredaran sabu di Laut Cina Selatan." The news writer mistakenly wrote

"ekspedisi" because the KBBI does not contain the word "expedis".

Furthermore, in the news with the title "Makin Parah, Indeks Kemacetan DKI Naik ke Peringkat 29 Kota Termacet di Dunia," the writing of "u-turn" has not been written using italics as the provisions are recorded in PUEBI. Another spelling mistake was found in the headline "Mengenal Stratosfer, Lapisan Atmosfer Bumi yang Mencegah Radiasi Ultraviolet,"

namely in the writing of "bernafas" which should be written "bernapas" because in the KBBI the correct spelling is "napas" not "nafas".

In the news article "Penerimaan Taruna Akpol, Bintara, dan Tamtama Polri 2023, Ini Cara Mendaftar dan Kuotanya", there were some mistakes in using punctuation marks. In the following quote, "Sebagaimana keterangan di laman resmi rekrutmen.polri, pendaftaran dibuka mulai kemarin, 4 April 2023)", the news writer is mistaken in using parentheses.

The writer only uses closing brackets at the end of the sentence without using opening brackets at the beginning of the sentence. In PUEBI, one of the functions of parentheses is to enclose additional information or explanation.

Another mistake was detected in the news titled "Alasan Jaksa Tuntut AG, Mantan Pacar Mario Dandy, 4 Tahun Penjara". In the excerpt, the writer mistakenly wrote

"Pengadilan Negeri" as "Pengadilan Ngeeri". In the KBBI, "pengadilan negeri" means a judicial body at the first level that has the power to try all cases of legal misconduct within its jurisdiction.

Another mistake in the use of italics was found in the news titled "Hindari Razia Knalpot Brong, Dua Pengendara Motor di Makassar Saling Tabrak hingga Patah Tulang".

The writer does not italicize the word "racing", which comes from a foreign language. The KBBI itself does not contain the word “racing”. A similar mistake was also found in the news article "Hancurnya Karier Puluhan Tahun AKBP Dody dalam Sekejap karena Ikut Masuk Pusaran Narkoba Teddy Minahasa". The word "handle" should be written in italics because it comes from a foreign language.

Furthermore, in the news article "Bertemu Jokowi, Pedagang Ikan di Pasar Rawamangun Dapat Uang Rp 1,2 Juta", the word "buy" was mistakenly spelled. The writer mistakenly wrote the word "neli". The meaning of "beli" in KBBI is to obtain something through exchange (payment) with money.

Several mistakes were found in the news article titled "When the Topic "Saat Topik

"Kapan Nikah?" Tergusur Oleh "Ganjar Nyapres" pada Silaturahmi Lebaran..." published on April 23, 2023. First, the writer mistakenly wrote the word "dekat-dekat" into "deka- dekat". Then, in the following quote, "Pria yang akrab disapa Totok ini menilai, waktu pengumuman Ganjar Pranowo sebagai kader yang didukung PDI-P maju Pilpres 2024, sehari sebelum Lebaran, sudah sangat tepat", the author did not end the sentence with a full stop. According to PUEBI, a full stop is used at the end of a statement.

The next mistake was found in the news article titled "5 Fakta Menarik Masjid Cheng Ho Pasuruan, Sejarah hingga Tempat Wisata". The spelling of "China" in this article is incorrect because in KBBI, the correct spelling is "Cina".

In the April 26, 2023 edition of the news titled "Revisi UU Pengelolaan Zakat", several mistakes were found in the spelling of words. First, "Pegawai" is mistakenly written as "Pengawai". In KBBI, "pegawai" means a person who works for the government (company, etc.). Secondly, the correct spelling of the word "Majlis" according to the KBBI is

"Majelis". Furthermore, the word "nishab" should be written "nisab". According to KBBI, the word "nisab" means the minimum amount of property that is subject to zakat. Lastly, the author mistakenly wrote the word "sertifikat" as "sertifita".

Italicization mistakes were found in the news article "Wanti-wanti Pendatang Baru ke Ibu Kota, Disdukcapil DKI: Jangan Sampai Tinggal di Jakarta Malah Lebih Sulit". The word

"skill", which comes from a foreign language, should be italicized. Similarly, the word

"release" in "Sejarah Gempa Mentawai di Zona Megathrust hingga Memicu Tsunami".

However, in the news titled "Mengaku Telah Berselingkuh, Ini Isi Lengkap Surat Pernyataan Virgoun yang Diunggah Inara Rusli", the word "Instagram" should not be italicized. According to PUEBI, proper names, such as names of people, institutions, or organizations, in foreign languages or local languages are not written in italics. Instagram is a product of an organization, so it should not be italicized.

Last, capitalization errors were found in the headline "Cerita Pengunjung Museum Prasasti: Mengagumi Soe Hok Gie hingga Thomas Raffles". In the following quote, "Salah

"prasasti" should begin with a capital letter because according to PUEBI, capital letters are used as the first letter of the place name.

CONCLUSION

The researcher read 80 news headlines, including 40 each from Kompascom and Detikcom. They discovered 15 titles with spelling mistakes on Detikcom. There are 25 news titles from Kompas.com that could be identified.

There were 60 mistakes from Detikcom. Meanwhile, 37 mistakes were found on Kompas.com. Italicization mistakes were mostly found in Detikcom, with 45 mistakes.

Meanwhile, word-writing mistakes were found more often on Kompas.com, with 17 mistakes. Other mistakes that were also found in both online newspapers were punctuation mistakes, capitalization mistakes, and mistakes in writing numeric symbols. It can be concluded that Kompas.com has fewer spelling mistakes than Detikcom in the March-April 2023 edition.
