This research aimed to describe the woman struggle of Daenerys as the main character in Game of Thrones Movie describes Marxist Feminism. This research used Marxist Feminism theory which was proposed by Tong about Feminism Thought. This research applied the descriptive qualitative method. This research used note- taking as the instrument to get valid data. The findings showed that Daenerys Targaryen struggle with the slaves in Meereen city and the findings also showed that there were three forms of struggle carried out by Daenerys Targaryen the Queen of Justice, Breaker of Chain, and Mother of Dragon as the main character in this movie such as freeing the slaves, rule of justice, and merciful. 1 CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1. Study Background

Struggle describes the resistance effort by a person or group to achieve something desired with the processes and obstacles that had been faced in the community environment. The struggle in life is very important to achieve good and to succeed. Struggle gives an actor a sense of agency. By engaging in struggle, an actor is reminded that they are not merely slaves or circumstance (Spicer & Fleming, 2006). This ultimately builds self-esteem and conviction that an actor can indeed act upon the world and make a difference. Second, the struggle often promotes social interaction within a group. This is because “one unit to fight, and one fight under the mutually recognized control of rules and norms”. There are some events of struggle that occurred in the world, one of them is in Iraq. In the spring of 2016, sadr, supporters took the streets to demand the appointment of a new, „technocratic‟ cabinet. In March, Sadr himself marched into Baghdad‟s Green zone, where he was warmly hailed by the security forces.

Later in the month, his supporters stormed the Green Zone and forced their way into the parliament building, again apparently unrestrained by state forces. Sadr‟s intervention in the struggle for control of the sovereign ministries exposed Abadi‟s weakness, as the prime minister failed on three occasions in April to secure parliamentary approval for his proposed new cabinet (Mansour, 2017).

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that struggle is a process of

(13)

2 resistance to achieve own desires and rights. The struggle created a change and differences in a person, also the struggle can build a character of the person to achieve what they want because life is a struggle.

Women's struggle is included in the verses of At-Tahriim: 11.

(en.noblequran.org, n.d.)

Translation:

“And Allah sets forth an example for the belief (who are âmenû) the wife of Pharaoh, she had said: “my lord! Build for me a house in Your Presence in heaven and deliver from Pharaoh and his action. And deliver me from the unjust people”. (QS. At-Tahriim: 11) (en.noblequran.org, n.d.)

The verses describe the struggle of Pharaoh‟s wife who struggled in her abilities. Asiyah was forced to marry Pharaoh and was threatened that both of her parents would be killed if she refuses the proposal. Nevertheless, being the wife of Pharaoh, she continued to struggle and obey in the way of Allah even though she was in a condition of difficulty and was surrounded by wrongdoers.

Literature is a human behavior common to all societies, a means of communicating universally similar feelings, thoughts, and so forth which crosses ages and spaces. Literature also a process imagination of writing novel, drama, even a movie (Nurhalidasia et al., n.d.). A movie is a visual medium, it fails to adequately convey a story, especially fantasy (Brett Vaden, 2015). In the modern era, the phenomena of struggle have inspired many producers to make a movie about struggle, such as English Vinglish from India, Lemon Tree from Israel, Blue

(14)

3 is the Warmest from France, Marlina from Indonesia, Mother from South Korea, and the most phenomenal one is Wonder Women from America. These movies speak loudly to women around the world who have suffered male oppression and deviance from male patriarchal activities. A movie allows its viewers to feel the oppression that was dealt with by the dominant identity, by which male oppressors of the many cases portrayed throughout the movie. Film and Literature are the artistic expressions of the human mind. Man thinks of different ways of communicating human experience to broaden the enlightenment scenario (Ramrao, 2016). At the very outset, nobody takes an interest and favor towards the connection of filming and writing (literature). The film also a form of media to shows a scene. The film is a work consisting of literary aspects and staging aspects (Fitriani, Ika., Junaid, Syahruni, Rauf, 2016). The relation (connection) of both, film and literature are as old as humanity not only showed in movie form but also, many of them displayed in the book, novel, and drama on the entire nation, likes, Lajja Women at Point Zero, Dry, Dear Sugar, etc.

One of the popular movies which show the value of Marxist feminism is the Game of Thrones movie especially in season IV. The Game of Thrones movie has received multiple nominations and awards such as Peabody Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Emmy Awards, and Critic‟s Choice Television Awards to mention a few. The event has received altogether 110 Emmy nominations and has won 38 of them. These include for instance 6 nominations for the Outstanding Drama Series. Game of Thrones has won the award twice in 2015 and 2016 (Jokinen, 2018).

(15)

4 This movie describes the mythical continents of Westeros, several powerful families that fight for controlled the Seven Kingdoms. Game of Thrones season IV shows the value of Marxist feminism in Daenerys Targaryen as the main character. In this movie, Daenerys Targaryen tries to hold the power in seven kingdoms with her dragons and the strong army. Daenerys Targaryen wants to be a queen in seven kingdoms because she had a descendant of the mad king as the real king in seven kingdoms. Besides, she also wants to save the slaves in Westeros. Therefore, the writer analyzed Game of Thrones movie season IV by using the Marxist Feminism approach.

Marxist Feminism believes that social class or structure is the fundamental that causes discrimination against women. Marxists show that class conflict is the motor power of history and reject the notion that there are some differences between the interest of men and women (NAILAH, 2016). Marxists and feminists often have the same goal in struggles for woman‟s rights to describe the quality in the world. Nowadays, people can see the value of Marxist Feminism in the movie.

2. Research Question

Based on the study background, the problem of the study is:

How does the woman struggle of the main character in the Game of Thrones Movie describe Marxist Feminism?

3. Research Objectives

Based on the question above, the objective of the research is:

To describe the woman struggle of the main character in the Game of Thrones movie which describes Marxist feminists.

(16)

5 4. Research Significance

The finding of this study is expected to give some contributions to the following parties:

1) Theoretically, it is expected that this research contributed to the knowledge regarding Marxist Feminism theory that is described as the main character in the Game of Thrones Movie. The findings of this study are expected to give useful information to conduct similar studies.

2) Practically, it is expected that this research contributed to the awareness toward seemingly harmless Marxist feminism theory.

1. Research Scope

The writer focused on analyzing Marxist feminist characters in the Game of Thrones movie. In this research, the writer used Tong's theory based on her book “Feminism Thought” in 2009 which describes feminism.

LITERATURE REVIEW

1. Previous Studies

Related to the study, some writers have analyzed the city in novels or movies. “Woman’s Problems and the Struggle Against Man Domination as Reflected in The Color Purple” (BANGUN, 2015) is a thesis that discusses the life of a woman named Celie which is also the main character in the novel. What Celie problem during her lifetime, being a child who since childhood under the pressure of male domination and how Celie struggles to face her problems and how the role of women around her to help and to supported her to struggle against man domination until she finally successes to become an emancipated woman and gets her freedom. The method used in analyzing this thesis is a qualitative method which this method describes and analyzes the data from the novel and then gives some interpretations and explanations. From the analysis, the author takes the conclusion that men and women should have the same position so that no more women are under the pressure of male domination.

Furthermore,Struggle of Woman in the Novel Sing Me to Sleep by Angela Morrison (The Analysis of Feminism)” (Eka Serli Sudarni, 2017). The thesis talks about the kinds of woman's struggle to get their love in the novel Sing Me to Sleep. This research used a qualitative descriptive method and focused on Virginia Woolf's theory. The writer explains that there are three kinds of struggles of women. The first is the struggle to accept the facts of life, the second the

(18)

7 struggle to achieve a dream, and finally the struggle in the form of affection and struggles to get her love. The implication of this research is to give more information, description, and comprehension about the Struggle of women.

Moreover, it can be a reference for the students of Adab and Humanities Faculty who are attracted to observed similar research. Therefore, this research can be concluded that the novel Sing Me to Sleep (2013) showed ten of kinds struggle of women, and struggle to get her love like Beth struggle to make Derek survive and Beth tried not to think negatively about his feelings.

Eddard Stark‟s Persistence in George R.R. Martin‟s a Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones (Budhi, 2017). The thesis describes Eddard Stark is characterized as an idealist young man who has a great sense of justice and honor.

Eddard Stark is also characterized as a devoted father who teaches his children Stark's beliefs. Being an honorable leader is Eddard Stark's achievement as a great lord. The belief also influences makes him being merciful and honest. The hard life that he has experienced makes him a tough person who can endure any condition. Those characteristics are used to measure his persistence. Eddard Stark's belief makes him eagerly do his duty and motivates him to work hard. The enthusiasm of handling the duty makes Eddard Stark being ambitious and being a perfectionist in holding his belief. While in the psychoanalytic perspective, the persistence is revealed from the id's desire that looks for contentment. The ego as the part of the id represses and fulfills the id's desire based on the reality principle.

It makes Eddard Stark eagerly do his duties and makes him work hard. The feeling of dissatisfaction on the id's part makes Eddard Stark an ambitious person.

(19)

8 The superego‟s roles are to support and evoke the feeling of guilt and regret to the id and ego if they violate the standard morale. The superego also makes Eddard Stark a tough person who holds onto his belief despite circumstances.

Based on the review of several previous studies focused on the struggling woman, there are some similarities and differences. The similarity between Bangun and this research is the focused analysis about the woman struggle, then the differences are Bangun used the theory of Feminism and the object of the research is analyzing the novel, while this research used Marxist Feminism and the writer analyze about the movie. Then, the similarity of Sudarni and this research are focused analyze about the woman struggle, then the differences are the researches do not use Tong‟s theory that describes feminism, and one of the writers only focused on Marxism theory. Then the similarity of Budhi and this research are focused analyze the movie of Game of Thrones and same analyze the character of Game of Thrones, then the differences are, Budhi used psychoanalytic theory and describe the character of Eddard Stark, while the writer focused on Marxist Feminism who describes the woman struggle.

2. Conceptual Framework a) Definition of Struggle

The struggle is a people largely equal in physical and mental abilities but tends to overvalue their ability compared with the ability of others. The struggle has a concept for resources needed to live. The struggle can refer to citizens, especially for the woman. Many problems that occur as the result of gender

(20)

9 inequality for women are marginalization, subordination, labeling, violence, and workload (Spicer & Fleming, 2006).

There are three kinds of struggle as follows as the struggle to accept the facts of life, the struggle to achieve a dream, and the struggle in the form of affection (Eka Serli Sudarni, 2017). Women have only a little influence in society and have no rights in the public area in the society. In the era before the feminism movement appears, the rights of women are so limited. The participation of women was not considered necessary (Andriyani, 2016). On the other hand, men always dominate in any realm. Women are not allowed to get an education because women only need to take care of their families. Based on the explanation above, women tend to get limit on the rights of men. Do not have the opportunity to reach the goal.

Marxist feminists blame the capitalistic mode of production as one of the main causes of male domination and women's oppression in society. They attempted to locate a material basis for women‟s subjugation (Mahboob et al., 2016). To find a relationship between the modes of production, or capitalism, and women‟s status; to determine, in other words, connections between the realms of production and reproduction.

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that the struggle is an effort, hard work, to achieve ahead, doing the best as possible to get the aspired success, either materially or not material.

b) Feminism theory

(21)

10 Feminism concerns itself with women‟s inferior position in society and with discrimination encountered by women because of their sex. Feminism is a term that occurs long after women started questioning their inferior status and demanding an amelioration in their social position. Feminism affects for the woman to declare equality between man and woman in this world. After a long trip of making the world better by making new rules, creating new things, and changing ancient ideas and thoughts. Women were still struggling every moment and they were still looking for their rights (Freedman, 2003). There are many kinds of feminism in literature. One of them is Marxist feminism. The Marxist movement has championed female equality and women‟s rights while regarding women‟s oppression (like racial, national, and other forms of special oppression) as something that cannot be eradicated without overturning the capitalist social system that nurtures and sustains it.

Feminism is too white and the middle class shows that a contemporary critical look on feminism is still necessary because women‟s equality is something concerning the whole world (Laak, 2017). The purpose of feminism to make a movement made by women to reject anything that is marginalized or subordinated as gender balance. Feminism is divided into eight types: they are Liberal Feminism, Radical Feminism, Postmodern Feminism, Anarchist Feminism, Marxist Feminism, Socialist Feminism, Postcolonial Feminism, and Nordic Feminism (Tong, 2009).

that feminists do not consider language a side-issue or luxury, but an essential part of the struggle for liberalism. In other words, language, for

(22)

11 feminists, is a medium of representation and a weapon to achieve freedom (Cahyono, 2009).

Based on the explanation above, it can be concluded that Feminism is a form of women's struggle who experiences oppression by men and focused on gender equality.

c) Feminist Film Criticism

Feminist film theory is a product of 'Second Wave' feminism, which began in the 1960s. With the slogan 'the personal is political, the Second Wave drew attention to domains of women's experience hitherto considered non-political and revealed the hidden power structures at work there, including in the home and family, reproduction, language use, fashion, and appearance. It aimed to transform the entirety of women's condition and not just one aspect, unlike the earlier suffragette movement that exclusively focused on the campaign for women's vote and left other areas of life unchanged (Chaudhuri, 2006). Feminists have many approaches to cinema analysis, regarding the film element analyzed and their theoretical underpinnings. Feminism is a perspective that seeks to eliminate the subordination, oppression, inequalities, and injustices women suffer because of their sex (Sulistini, 2014).

d) Marxist Feminism

Marxist Feminism criticism focuses on the relationship between reading and social realities (Yu, 2016). This movement revolved around taking the

“burden” off women regarding housework, cooking, and other traditional female

(23)

12 domestic jobs. It indicates that women‟s oppression. Capitalism is the cause of women‟s oppression.

Marxist feminism describes the independence of women in economic matters. Women are capable of fulfilling life necessities by their selves. Always on call, women form a conception of themselves they would not have if their roles in the family and the workplace did not keep them socially and economically subordinate to men (Tong, 2009). Thus, Marxist and socialist feminists believe we need to analyze the links between women‟s work status and women‟s self-image to understand the unique character of women‟s oppression. They provide accounts of how social arrangements of pat- termed disparity can be internally rational yet unjust. But their specificity is not incidental.

Marxist-feminism critiques both the power rooted in the distinction between male and female, which focuses mostly on patriarchy, and the power rooted in the distinction between bourgeoisie and proletariat, which focuses on capitalism. Women are implied on both sides of understandings, and these two theories of power are interrelated through the sexual division of labor (Pratama, 2018).

Marxist and socialist feminists aim to create a world in which women can experience themselves as whole persons, as integrated rather than fragmented beings, as people who can be happy even when they are unable to make their families and friends happy (Tong, 2009). Marxist feminism explains to us that women must be confident and happy with their selves. They must enjoy themselves as whole persons.

(24)

13 e) Synopsis

Game of Thrones is the most popular show on HBO and has millions of fans from all over the world. The books and the show are infamous for killing off the main character without remorse and keeping the fans on their toes, praying that their favorite will not be next. Daenerys Targaryen and her army go to the slaver‟s bay to save the slavers there. They are going to divest the slavers from the intimation of the king in Slaver‟s bay. As functionally once a slave herself, Daenerys is determined to free the downtrodden slaves of the region. First Astapor and then Yunkai as the cities in Game of Thrones fell before Daenerys's forces, and hundreds of thousands of freed slaves now flock to her banner. Yet Daenerys must now face the last and greatest of the slaver-cities, Meereen and unlike her previous victories, they have had time to prepare for her arrival (Jokinen, 2018).

(25)

14 CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the writer discussed the method of this research. This chapter included of research method, data source, research instrument, data collection procedure, data analysis procedure.

1. Research Method

In this research, the writer used descriptive Qualitative. The qualitative descriptive study approach generates diverse descriptive accounts of the phenomenon while limiting abstraction to the level required to summarize and present data to its intended audience, rather than discover theory (GRANT, 2007).

The descriptive qualitative method can be identified as important and appropriate for research questions that focus on discovering the events or experiences and on acquiring insights from informants regarding a poorly understood phenomenon.

Qualitative research Is the method of research that generates descriptive data from people in written or oral and behavior that can be observed. It is a necessary approach to empower individuals to share their stories and minimize the power relationship between a writer and participants, therefore the writers can hear the silenced voice in groups or communities (Adila et al., 2003).

(26)

15 The framework in qualitative research is often applied to conduct research that involves socials and human issues like Marxist feminism that involves marginalized communities. Hence qualitative research design was used by the writer to analyze the criticism towards struggle woman in the Game of Thrones movie. Qualitative is about exploring issues, understanding phenomena, and answering questions by analyzing the data.

2. Data Source

The data source had been taken from Game of Thrones Movies as the primary data and related book and some references which are connected with the struggling woman toward Marxism Feminism as the secondary data in completing this research.

3. Research Instrument

Note-taking is the practice of writing down or otherwise recording key points of information. Note-taking is a method in assembling data required by using note cards to write down the data findings from the source of data. To find the data easily, the note cards are also completed by number and page where the data found (Junaid & Ikhsan, 2014).

Therefore, Note-taking is the practice of recording information captured from another source by using some media such as paper, pen, and pencil. The writer would get information clearly in Game of Thrones Movies using note- taking.

4. Data Collection Procedures

(27)

16 In the step of the data collection procedure, the writer needed both primary and secondary data sources. The writer then:

a) The writer starts with watch the Game of Thrones movies, which is the primary data of this research, and reads it over and over until the writer understands the story well.

b) The writer also looks into secondary data such as gathering data from books, articles, webs and other supporting material that is relevant to the topic of the study.

c) After the collection of raw materials, the writer starts to go through the data more thoroughly and takes down any notes for necessary explanations. This involves underlining and highlighting important data as well as quoting from the movie to provide concrete evidence. The data had been selected and organized by the problem of the study so finally, the writer can carry out an analysis.

d) Classify the data accurately by related to the problems and aims of this study within the movie.

e) Investigated and identified Marxist feminism that that reflected by Daenerys Targaryen in the Game of Thrones movie.

f) Identified and described data that Marxist feminism that that reflected by Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones movie.

g) The writer concludes the overall data analysis that has been identified and analyzed.

5. Data Analysis Techniques

(28)

17 When all the data and information related to the topic are collected, the analysis can be done. The writer used Marxist Feminism by Tong theory to analyze this research.

CHAPTER IV

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSIONS

It is two-part in this chapter, namely findings and discussions, in finding, the writer describes all the data that have been found in the Game of Thrones Movie.

1. Findings

In this part, the writer presents Game of Thrones Movie Season IV which focuses on the main character to analyzed woman struggle used the Marxist Feminism theory of Tong.

A. Daenerys Targaryen struggle with the slaves in Mereen City.

In-Game of Thrones Movie Season IV shows some oppression in several places, one of them is in Meereen city, many acts of slavery occurred in the city, the slaves were chained and killed by the masters. Daenerys as the main character made war to changed and take over the city, Daenerys must take over the city so slavery does not happen again.

Datum 1: Daenerys and Meereen city

(29)

18 Daenerys : I am Daenerys Stormborn. Your masters may have told

you lies about me, or they may have told you nothing. It does matter. I have nothing to say of them. I speak only to you (the Slaves). first, I went to Astapor. Those who were slaves in Astapor, now stand behind me, Free.

Next, I went to Yunkai. Those who were slaves in Yunkai, now stand behind me, Free. Now I have come to Meereen. I am not your enemy. Your enemy is beside you. Your enemy steals and murder your children.

Your enemy has nothing for you but chain and suffering, and command. I do not bring you command.

I bring you a choice. And I bring your enemies what they deserve. [Daenerys shouted firmly in front of the city Meereen]

Datum 1: The writer found the correlation between the dialog. The dialog and Tong theory define woman struggle.

Based on the dialog above, Daenerys Targaryen as the main character and her army go to Meeren city to save the slaves by fighting against the city. Daenerys told all the slaves in the city of Meereen that she came with a thousand of the army to make Meereen city to be her own and freeing all slaves also made a new rule about equality. (48:24 - 55:21 Season IV Episode 3, on Game of Thrones)

Datum 2: The rebellion of the slaves

Grey Worm : But I promise you. A single day of freedom is worth more than a lifetime in chains. [Talk to the slaves]

The Slaves : Who are you? [Confuse and Looked at the Unsullied while asking a question]

Grey Worm : This one is called Grey Worm. I was taken a baby by the Maters of Astapor, raised and trained as Unsullied. Now I fight for Daenerys, the Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains. [Explain the Slaves]

The Slaves : You are Unsullied? They taught you how to fight before you could walk. We are not soldiers!

(30)

19 We have no training, no weapons. [Feel hesitated and gave up]

Grey Worm : [Give out weapons]

Grey Worm : There are three slaves in this city for every Master. No one can give you freedom, brothers. If you want it, you must take it. [Explain and inspire to the slaves]

(30:17 - 31:23 Season IV Episode 8, on Game of Thrones)

2. Discussion

A. Daenerys Targaryen struggle with the slaves in Meereen City.

In the discussion of research, the writer discussed the problem questioned in chapter one, it was the woman struggle of the main character in Game of Thrones Movie describe Marxist Feminism.

In this part, the writer describes the data analysis which has been found from findings above about Daenerys Targaryen struggle that slaves in Meereen city and also Daenerys Targaryen the Queen of justice, Breaker of Chain, and Mother of Dragons. The writer analyzed using Tong Theory which describes Marxist Feminism. Marxist Feminism explains how people struggle and fight for rights and equality over oppression and slavery. Based on this movie, the writer focuses on explaining the character of Daenerys who struggle with the slaves for freedom, and how Daenerys change the system without slavery and oppression in

(38)

27 that city.

In Datum 1, Daenerys and her army go to Meereen city to free the slaves there, Meereen city was famous for slavery and oppression. In other than freeing the slaves, Daenerys also want to take over the city and also control the system as well as the rule of that city. Daenerys brought a full army, to anticipate any resistance that could lead to war. In datum 1, Daenerys notifies all the slaves in Meereen city of her arrival to save them from being oppressed by their masters and will change the rule. Then in datum 1, Daenerys throw the slaves necklace that she has freed and provides proof that she came and wants to save the slaves.

Based on the dialog above, the writer found the process of the struggling woman to fight against the rule and maters to save all the slaves in Meereen city.

Then in datum 2, the slaves talk about Daenerys plan to come and help them free from oppression, they plan resistance but they have had no equipment to fight, Daenerys army come and give them a weapon to fight the masters who have oppressed them and begin to plan to revenge. In datum 2, the slaves take revenge, beginning with the sign "Kill the Masters" and begin to kill the masters who have oppressed and killed their family. At the same time, the slaves carried out the first massacre that occurred in the city, and they also succeeded in acting with the support of Daenerys.

Based on the picture above, the writer found the process of justice to struggle for the rights of everyone. Because of Daenery's support, the slaves become convinced of their victory.

In datum 3, the struggle of Daenerys to take over the Meereen city is

(39)

28 succeeded, Daenerys freeing all the slaves in that city and give a rule about justice, all the masters were given punishment for their actions against the salves, besides, Daenerys advisor considered the punishment should be to provide forgiveness, but for the action of the masters oppressed, killed, and rape the slaves is a very cruel act. Daenerys denies forgiving the masters, they must feel what they are doing, Daenerys considers things as a matter of justice to the slaves.

In-Game of Thrones, slavery is an act that often happens in all cities and kingdoms it is commonplace, the masters consider slavery as a job for the lower classes to survive, but the lower class cannot fight what they experience, such as being oppressed, killed, and treated like an animal. Daenerys character in this movie, want to fight and change all those rules, make a peace and equality the way the slaves wanted.

C. Daenerys Targaryen the Queen of justice, Breaker of Chain, and Mother of Dragons.

Daenerys struggles to make the city order of Meereen better, slavery and oppression no longer exist, also the tradition in the city about slavery has been eliminated, and prioritizes the welfare of the people in the city, even though Daenerys is a woman, she can make a dream become reality. Every city and kingdom she visited was free from acts of slavery, as Marx in Tong said in his theory. The mode of production of material life conditions the general process of social, political, and intellectual life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but their social existence that determines their

(40)

29 consciousness (Tong, 2009).

In this part, the writer found 3 forms of struggle and change that occurred in those movies namely freeing the slaves, Daenerys purpose, and merciful. In datum 4, Daenerys has freed the slaves in Meereen city, with his victory and efforts, the slaves are very happy for the struggle and help to free them, also the slaves call Daenerys by the nickname “Mysa” or Mother which means savior for them. After a long time, the tradition of slavery in Meereen city is disappeared, and oppression was also removed from the city. The presence of a new leader made the city order of Meereen better and allowed the slaves to live happily.

In datum 5, Daenerys has a goal and plan to rule all kingdom so that slavery across the kingdom can be erased, however, to achieve her purpose, Daenerys adviser suggested preparing more army and preparation so that can be fulfilled. Daenerys has a fairly strong army including 8.000 The Unsullied, 60.000 Dothraki, and 2000 Second Sons army. The army is known for its courage and killing skills which are very cruel and also known for brutality. Daenerys also has the main weapon; she has 2 Dragons that can destroy the kingdom with one burst on fire. despite having many armies and dragons, the power has not been able to control the whole kingdom. Every kingdom has prepared a way to face Daenerys army.

In datum 6, in these scenes, one of the slaves faces and asks Daenerys to give him a chance to become a slave. The slaves had no job and have no family but to serve their master. He explained that his master was very kind and wise.

Daenerys felt a little confused about the slave's person. The reason Daenerys took

(41)

30 over the city to free them, but they asked to remain a slave to the masters, not even a few asked for such things, many slaves willing to queue to ask for the same thing. Daenerys has no choice but to grant that request based on his rights and wishes if he feels free and saves to be slaves, but with some conditions that they must obey and follow. Daenerys must understand what people feel and also Daenerys must take the right choice to be well accepted by the people of Meereen city as a new leader.

In datum 7, when Daenerys goes to Meereen city, her journey was stopped. She saw on every route of Meereen city many slaves died and were crucified. Daenerys ordered the advisor to count the number of slaves who were crucified. They were crucified because of the mistakes they do to their masters.

Daenerys thought it was very cruel and inhuman, Daenerys advisor ordered some of his men to bury their bodies. before the slaves were buried, Daenerys wanted to see and remember the faces of the slaves who were crucified on every route she passed. Daenerys seemed very disrespectful of the master's treatment of the slaves. She planned to pay back what the masters do to the slaves who had abused and killed arbitrarily. In datum 7, after Daenerys victory and taking over the city of Meereen, she promised to repay the master's action against the lower classes.

She gave the same punishment by crucifying every street in the city of Meereen.

For atrocities committed by the masters, Daenerys intolerance and compassion toward them.

In datum 8, Hizdahr zo Loraq came to Daenerys to ask for his father who had been crucified to be free. Hizdahr zo Loraq said that his father was one

(42)

31 of the masters who opposed the tradition of slavery, but Hizdahr zo Loraq‟s father was one of the masters, and all the masters in Meereen city had been punished by Daenerys. Due to this misunderstanding, Daenerys decided to release and bury Hizdahr zo Loraq‟s father properly by costume and lay manner. Daenerys tolerate Hizdahr zo Loraq for a reason that made Daenerys change her mind. Daenerys decision made Hizdahr zo Loraq very happy and grateful for the opportunity that he gave.

In datum 9, sir Barristan as Daenerys advisor receives a letter from a child containing a warrant to spy on Daenerys. The spy is Jorah who is also Daenerys advisor. Ser Jorah has been a spy for Daenerys Enemies. Jorah leaks information and secret about Daenerys position, the number of her army, and all the power. Jorah also confessed his action in front of Daenerys and her officials, he gave all the information about her power and weakness, he also almost made plans to kill her, but Jorah said loyal to Daenerys because he was attracted and love her. Because of his love, Jorah decides to loyal. That reason did not make Daenerys forgive Jorah, Daenerys decides not to kill him but rather remove Jorah from her kingdom and is ordered to return and loyal to Daenerys enemies.

The writer found the similarity of the datum between the previous findings of Sudarni, Bangun, and Budhi. In Sudarni's thesis, a child Beth loves her mother and struggles to fight injustice because his ugly face becomes a mockery of her school. While the Bangun thesis, Cellie is a character in the novel The Color Purple who becomes a slave to her stepfather, and Cellie struggle against physical violence by the man around her. In this thesis, Daenerys as the main character

(43)

32 struggle for the slaves of all the city who oppressed by the Masters. The writer concludes the similarity of the research between previous findings is the research is the women struggle to deal with acts of injustice, and struggle to achieve what they want about equality of gender. Then the differences of this research in Sudarni thesis is, Beth struggle against injustice to herself, and did not describe the struggle to others, Beth describes her problem in her life, people around her bullying her for having an ugly face and explain how a woman can survive and struggle to herself, does not affect to others, then Sudarni used the theory of Feminism. While Bangun thesis, thesis used feminism theory, then explain the woman struggle of Cellie to fight against men who oppressed and rape her, the research describes the struggle for the rights of the main character to be free from the act of oppression but to become a leader in freedom is not describe in the research. This thesis describes the woman struggle to fight against men who oppressed her and all people, the main character in Game of Thrones describe how woman struggles to become the leader and get the right about justice and also have an impact on others. This thesis used Marxist Feminism theory, Marxist Feminism describes the struggle to be a leader and have an impact on the whole people, and prioritize the theory to make a piece of others. The similarity of Budhi and this research have described the character of being merciful and having faith in a goal to be achieved, the writer analyses the character of Daenerys about merciful in point B part 3 of the findings, Daenerys goals was to become a leader to save the salves. Also, Budhi and this research used the same movie about Game of Thrones. The differences in the research are Budhi used the theory of

(44)

33 Psychoanalytic to describe the character of Eddard Stark, while this research used Marxist Feminism to describe struggle woman.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

In this chapter, the writer presents several conclusions and suggestions.

After analyzing the data, the writer makes some conclusion and suggestion to the readers related to the research, as the following:

A. Conclusion

After analyzing Game of Thrones Movie Season IV, the writer makes conclusion related to the study woman struggle as follow:

1. The writer found the process of woman struggle as Daenerys in Game of Thrones Movie Season IV, first, in Meereen city many slaves are

(45)

34 oppressed and killed by the masters, and Daenerys came with her army to take over the city and eliminated the oppression and slavery in the city.

Daenerys managed to take over the city and make herself to be queen, according to her promises and her purpose, the slaves were free from the cruelty of their masters. Second, Daenerys plans to take over the city by giving the weapon to the slaves to fight and against the masters, the slaves are assisted by Daenerys army to fight the power of the masters. After her plan was smooth sailing, under the leadership of Daenerys, she promised to give punishment to the masters who had tortured, murdered, and oppressed the slaves.

2. The writer found the form of struggle woman which Daenerys did in Meereen city. There are several forms of struggle women during her leadership in Meereen city such as Freeing the slaves, Rule of Justice, and Merciful. A struggle not only fights for the rights of others but also for oneself. Daenerys not only fought for the rights of the slaves but fought against her ego. Daenerys must remain fight against her very cruel past, where she was raped, tortured, and even sold by her brother. She did not want it to happen again. Therefore, she trying to fight herself to achieve her dream. During her leadership in Meereen city, she had to be faced with several requests from the slaves and the people of Meereen. Although several requests made Daenerys refuse, she had to give up and approve it with the reason and purpose that she led in the city. However, behind Daenerys kindness, she must also be firm in leading, when she gives

(46)

35 punishment to the masters for their action. On the other side, she also had to expel her advisor who turned out to be a traitor.

B. Suggestion

Based on the conclusion above, the writer suggests the below:

1. The writer suggests to the reader to focus more on increasing their knowledge in the literature approach. They have to learn about the literature approach especially on the Marxist Feminism by Tong's theory so that women can know how to form of the struggle and also how to be a leader.

2. The writer who wants to analyze it are expected to study more about Marxist Feminism because there is a lot of discussion and theory about Marxist Feminism in Tong's book "Feminism Thought"

3. Woman have their rights; they must believe and have a leadership spirit without having to depend on men. A woman can also be what she wants as long as she wants to struggle for it.
