Canon of the Mass From Concerning the Abomination of Low Mass (Canon Missae From Yore Greuel Der Stillmesse, 1525). He still lives in the seal he left on the worship of the Church.

Buchwald 7:151 f

St. Louis 10:221f

John, which immediately follows in the Christmas Octave, instead of the customary possessions of those Days. Considering the difference in the personalities of the translators, the two German texts are very close to the original.

THE CANON OF THE MASS

CONCERNING THE ABOMINATION OF LOW MASS

The Missals of the Luther period are rare, especially those in which the Canon missae are printed. Then he prays for peace again, bows before the body of the Lord and says. Here he takes the paten with the body of Christ and says I will take the heavenly bread and invoke the Name of the Lord.

A PREFACE

SUGGESTED FOR USE AT THE HOLY COMMUNION

Weimar 19:47

AT THE HOLY COMMUNION

But those who remain obstinate in open sins, such as greed, hatred, anger, envy, usury, impurity, and the like, and are not resolved to cease [these things], to them this [dinner] is hereby refused, and they have been faithfully warned to they do not come so that judgment and damage to souls do not come to them like St.

EXHORTATION TO THE CHRISTIANS IN LIVONIA CONCERNING PUBLIC WORSHIP AND UNITY

Walch 10:286ff

Just as we hope and pray that the gracious Father will preserve you and us and perfect us in one sense, according to the likeness of his dear Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Nevertheless, both you and your preachers must use all diligence to the end that all may proceed harmoniously and with one accord, and such work of the devil be opposed and combated. It is both profitable and necessary as far as you are concerned, and to the honor and praise of God who has called you into His light.

THE GERMAN MASS AND ORDER OF SERVICE

  • LUTHER’S ATTITUDE TOWARD VERNACULAR SERVICES
  • THE PREPARATION AND INTRODUCTION OF LUTHER’S GERMAN SERVICE
  • THE GERMAN MASS AND ORDER OF WORSHIP
  • CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES
  • IMPORTANCE AND WORTH

However, in the Formula missae, Luther suggests the possible omission of the Gloria if the pastor so desires. The text given appears to be a translation of the Collect for the Third Sunday after Trinity. But this was certainly a mistake, owing to the impulse of the moment to introduce a catechetical feature, viz. the Paraphrase of the Lord's Prayer.

MARTIN LUTHER’S PREFACE

The second is the German Mass and the Order of Service, which concerns us here and which should be introduced for the sake of the simple laity. Because we want to keep the youth in the knowledge and use of the Latin Bible, as said above. Therefore, it is best to plan the services in the interests of the young and simple-minded that may arise.

THE ORDER OF BAPTISM TRANSLATED INTO GERMAN

THE ORDER OF BAPTISM NEWLY REVISED

HOW ONE SHALL PROPERLY AND

INTELLIGIBLY BAPTIZE A PERSON INTO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH

INTRODUCTION

The Creed that immediately preceded the Lord's Prayer was omitted at this point, giving the Lord's Prayer its true character: the prayer: the Confession of Faith. The reasons why this Order was translated and promulgated, and why he made no radical changes to it, are very explicitly stated in the statement which Luther initially appended to the Order and later printed as a preface.

DAS TAUFBUECHLEIN AUFS NEUE ZUGERICHTET

Radical changes indeed, the majority deals with the "ceremonies." But there were no new additions in material or any revolutionary changes in structure. Luther added it to the Small Catechism and it was included in many of the contemporary church.

WIE MAN RECHT UND VERSTAENDLICH EINEN MENSCHEN ZUM CHRISTENGLAUBEN

TAUFEN SOLL

One may readily attribute such interest on the part of many of these devoted and pious men; and it is not beyond probability that there could be a personal reason in the family life of one of these officials which would have moved him to make such a request of Luther. That this is a mere German display of the Bamberg agenda's office is certainly not against it, since the Bamberg custom was what Luther was accustomed to. The small writing has by no means been proven false based on the arguments advanced by some critics.

THE ORDER OF BAPTISM

TRANSLATED INTO GERMAN BY MARTIN LUTHER

His servant: for God and our Lord Jesus Christ out of his goodness called him to his holy grace and blessing, and to the fountain of baptism, that you never dare disturb this sign of the holy cross which we make on his forehead. ; after him who comes again to judge, etc. I adjure you, unclean spirit, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, to come out and leave this servant of God, N. Then the priest places his hand on the child's head and, together with the godparents who are kneeling, pray the Our Father.

MARTIN LUTHER TO ALL CHRISTIAN READERS,

I adjure you, unclean spirit, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, to come out and depart from this servant of Jesus Christ, N. Then the priest places his hands on the head of the child and, together with the godparents who are kneeling, prays the Our Father. Communion of Saints, forgiveness of sins, resurrection of the body and eternal life after death.

INTELLIGIBLY BAPTIZE A PERSON INTO THE CHRISTIAN FAITH,

The Baptist: Do you deny the devil and all his works and all his pride and boasting. The baptist pours water over him and says: Ego baptizo te in nomine patris et filii et spiritus sancti. The baptist says to the child when he puts on the baptismal robe: Receive a white robe that you must wear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that you (can) have eternal life.

A SHORT METHOD OF CONFESSING TO THE PRIEST, FOR THE USE OF SIMPLE FOLK

A MARRIAGE BOOKLET FOR SIMPLE PASTORS

Weimar 303:74

A MARRIAGE BOOKLET FOR SIMPLE F299 PASTORS

For even if it is a worldly wealth, it has the Word of God in its favor, and is not invented or created by men, as was the wealth of monks and nuns. And the Lord God formed a woman from the ribs, which he took from the man and brought to him. And God spoke to the man: Because you listened to your wife's voice and ate from her tree.

ORDINATION OF MINISTERS OF THE WORD

  • The examination of the candidate as to his worthiness and fitness;
  • election to the office;
  • confirmation and commendation in the presence of the (calling) congregation;
  • the Church’s intercession for the chosen candidate

After this, another prayer, developed from the first three prayers in the Lord's Prayer, can be prayed. Second, — The Ordinator f301 and the priests f302 or presbytes f302 in the Church with the Ordinands f301 in the middle next to the Ordinator, must kneel before the altar. Fifthly, - Then with the hands of the entire presbytery placed on their heads, the ordinator says the Lord's Prayer in a clear voice.

THE LATIN LITANY CORRECTED

There is no evidence to prove the use of the Litany in the churches of the Reformation Movement from. In the same way I speak against the sayings of many masses and the many invocations of the saints. In reforming or "correcting" the ancient Litany, Luther gave a lasting gift to the worship life of the Church.

LATINA LITANIA CORRECTA

THE LATIN LITANY, CORRECTED

That you would f332 be worthy to destroy all sects f333 and all crimes; f334 to lead back the erring f335 and mislead on the way of truth; — v to trample f336 Satan under our feet; to send faithful laborers into your harvest;. That You would be worthy to forgive our enemies, persecutors and slanderers and convert them to give and preserve the fruits of the earth;. O God, merciful Father, who does not slight the groans of the penitent and does not despise the emotion of the sorrowful: f353 Be present f354 at our prayers that 'in the midst of trials that overwhelm us so heavily f355, we fall before You out, and listen to them graciously, so that what has been laid against us as traps, f356 the deception of the devil and of man, may be reduced to nothing f357 and may be scattered according to the counsel of your goodness, f358 until the end who is not smitten by any reproach. f359 we may always thank You in your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

THE GERMAN LITANY

O thou Lamb of God, who bearest the sin of the world, O thou Lamb of God, who bearest the sin of the world, O thou Lamb of God, who bearest the sin of the world, Christ. Lord, almighty God, who does not despise the sigh of the despondent, and who does not despise the longing of [those] troubled hearts: O look upon our prayer, which we offer to thee in our distress, and graciously hear us, that all who strive against us, both of the devil and of men, may come to nothing, and according to thy good providence may be turned away from us, that we, unharmed by every temptation, may thank thee in thy . Lord God, heavenly Father, who delights not in the death of wretched sinners, nor willingly suffers them to perish, but desires them to repent and live: We humbly beseech thee that thou wilt graciously turn away from us well-deserved punishment for our sins, and graciously grant us Your mercy, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord, in order to improve us in the future.

HYMN BOOK PREFACES

This book is known as the Achtliederbuch and contains four of Luther's hymns; the first four in the previous list. This book is known as the Erfurter Enchiridion; it contains twenty-five hymns, eighteen of which are by Luther, numbers one through eighteen in the preceding list. It was published to give the congregation, the common people, the opportunity and means to become familiar with the songs that are sung in church, so that they would understand what might be going on there.

GEYSTLICHE GESANGK BUCHLEYN

SPIRITUAL HYMN BOOKLET

Therefore I pray that every devout Christian may be satisfied with this, and if God has given him greater or equal gifts in such things, assist [this good cause]. Even apart from this, unfortunately, the whole world is too careless and indifferent to the teaching and training of the youth, that no one should be allowed to be the first to offer an encouragement in this direction.

GEISTLICHE LIEDER AUFFS NEU GEBESSERT ZU WITTEMBERG

SPIRITUAL HYMNS NEWLY REVISED AT WITTEMBERG

In order to protect us as much as possible from such an experience in the future, I have gone through this entire booklet again and arranged our own hymns in order myself and printed the name in connection with them, something I refrained from doing before because the distinction or fame, but is now necessarily driven to it so that strange and unfit hymns will not be sold under cover of our name. I beg and admonish all who love the pure word [more than those who are guilty of such dubious usages], that in the future they will not attempt to improve or enlarge our little book without our knowledge and consent. For we are diligent to preserve our treasure in the value in which we hold it, and not against anyone the privilege of making for himself a better one - so that God's name alone is praised and our name is not sought.
