OUT 'N' AROUND

-The University of Michigan, which had the highest Big Ten tuition and the fifth highest tuition of all state universities, has reduced tuition 5 per cent for the current semester • • • Southern Illinois University has dismissed 104 faculty and staff members, effective at the end of the academic year. SIU President David R.

Derge (former I.U. vice-president) immediately filed a class action suit to establish that the university acted lawfully and to prevent suits by any of the 104, some of whom are tenured. The dismissals were prompted by enrollment and budget declines

(English enrollments are down 40 per cent since 1969) . • • The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to review -- and thus let stand -- a U.S. District Court decision that the University of Nebraska is legally able to impose mandatory student fees which are used for "controversial" speakers and publications • • .
