Romance Genre Elements as Seen in Colleen Hoover’s November 9

Nerawati Fadriyn 14111129

This research is aimed to explain the eight elements of romance in a romance novel from Colleen Hoover’s November 9. The story of the novel is about the love journey between Fallon and Ben. The writer studied November 9 as a unit analysis and used genre study approach and romance genre theory by Regis (2003). The writer uses qualitative-descriptive analysis as the method of the research, which tries to explain about the eight elements of romance in Ben and Fallon love story which the data was taken from November 9 novel. The analysis qualitatively uses the theory of romance theory book entitled A Natural History of the Romance Novel from Regis (2003) that show the events that happened in a romance novel.

Meanwhile, the writer uses genre study as the approach of the research to find the elements of novel. Based on the result of the data analysis, the research finds eight elements of romance in the novel that has been chosen, they are: society defined, the meeting, the barrier, the attraction, the declaration, point of ritual death, the recognition, and the betrothal. Therefore, the writer concludes that all essences in romance elements can be found in November 9.
