ABSTRACT

Introduction: There are numerous studies elucidating the impact of acupuncture on pulmonary functions. In all those studies acupuncture points were selected in combination or based on individual yin yang pulse. Also certain studies used moxibustion as separate or in combine with acupuncture points. Hence, in this study Conceptional Vessel- 17(CV 17) point was planned to access its impact on pulmonary functions of Bronchial asthma patients.

Objective: This research work aims at finding the effects of CV 17 in improving the Pulmonary functions of Bronchial Asthma patients

Study Design: Randomized Control Trial.

Method: A total of 60 study subjects were selected with age groupof 15 years and above

fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The study participants were randomized into study (n=30) and control group (30). The study group underwent 20 mins treatment CV 17 acupuncture with moxibustion and control group with placebo acupuncture and moxibustion for a period of 14 days. Base line and end line pulmonary function assessment were done on day 0 and day 14.

Result: The study revealed significant changes in the spirometry values of the study participants. The pulmonary function observed to be significantly improved with moxibustion toConceptional Vessels 17 acupuncture instudy participants.

Conclusion: The practice of this CV 17needling with moxibustion into the daily life of bronchial asthma patients for a short period of time will facilitates in improving the PEFR and strengthening the pulmonary function significantly.
