Awareness programme on

“Insurance of Livestock and Poultry”

An awareness programme on “Insurance of livestock and poultry” was organized by

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR, Tura in Marapara village (Dalu block), West Garo Hills, Meghalaya on 27th May 2014 under the

project “National Initiative on Climate

Resilient Agriculture (NICRA)”. Insurance of livestock and poultry is very much essential for the farmers to minimize the risk of loss due to death of those from any disease or accident (inclusive of fire and lighting, flood, inundation, storm,

hurricane cyclone, Torando, tempest and earthquake) or surgical operations or strike, riot and civil commotion. The programme was conducted by the KVK to make the farmers fully aware about the benefit of the insurance of livestock to them and popularize it with the ultimate goal of attaining qualitative improvement in livestock and their products. The participants were also taught the guidelines and conditions of insurance policies of livestock and poultry including the documents to effect insurance coverage and claim procedures.

A total of 33 nos of farmers (mostly women farmers) of Marapara village benefited from the programme. Lectures were given by Dr. Sagarika Borah (Progm Asstt, Animal Sc.), Mr.A.S.Singh (SMS, Horticulture), Mr. Greatush Marak (SRF, NICRA) and Ms. Abila Sahkhar (SRF, NICRA), KVK, ICAR, Tura.
