INSTALLING THE SOLVER PLUG-IN

1.  Click on “File” from the top left corner of the Excel Window.

2.  Go to “Options” and select “Add-ins”.

3.  In the “Add-ins” window, select “Excel Add-ins”

from the drop-down menu at the bottom of the screen and click on “Go”.

4.  Check “Solver Add-in” in the list that is displayed and click on “Ok”.

5.  Go to the “Data” tab and check whether “Solver”

is displayed among the list of available tools or not.

HOW TO SOLVE AN LPP ON EXCEL

1.  Install Solver Add-In (as explained in previous slide) 2.  Type in the problem in the desired format (check

3.  Click on solver and specify the references for Objective Function, Variables and Constraints 4.  Click on “Solve”

QUESTION 1

•  A diet is to contain at least 400 units of

carbohydrate, 500 units of fat and 300 units of protein.

•  Two foods are available: F1, which costs Rs. 2 per unit and F2, which costs Rs. 4 per unit.

•  A unit of food F1 contains 10 units of carbohydrate, 20 units of fat and 15 units of protein; a unit of food F2 contains 25 units of carbohydrate, 10 units of fat and 20 units of protein.

•  Find the minimum cost for a diet that consists of a mixture of these two foods and also meet the

•  A firm produces A, B and C, each of which passes

through 3 different departments: Fabrication, Finishing and Packaging.

•  Each unit of A requires 3 hours in the fabrication

department, 4 hours in the finishing department and 2 hours in the packaging department. Similar parameters for B and C are 5,4,4 and 2,4,5 respectively.

•  Every week, 60 hours are available in the fabrication department, 72 hours in the finishing department and 100 hours in the packaging department.

•  The unit contribution of products A, B and C to profits are Rs. 5, Rs. 10 and Rs. 8 respectively.

•  How many units of A, B and C should the firm produce to maximize its profit?
