ABSTRACT

Dyes are important particles in the textile industries, carpet manufacturing, leather dyeing and paper and pulp industry. All these industries use the synthetic dyes which are carcinogenic, mutagenic and non biodegradable. But these dyes are harmful when combines with the water bodies because these dyes contains organic and inorganic toxic chemicals. They are harmful at low concentrations also and disturb the aquatic life. Various methods are in use for the removal of dyes from the wastewater. Solvent extraction is found to be easy, efficient and low cost procedure in which solvent can be easily recovered. In this study solvent extraction method was used to extract Acid Orange-7 dye from textile effluent using reverse micelles of CPC (Cetyl pyridinium chloride) surfactant.

Experiments were conducted by mixing a known quantity of dye in aqueous phase and organic solvent containing cationic surfactant in a simple mixer. Dye molecules get entrapped in core of reverse micelles present in organic phase and it is subsequently separated from aqueous phase which leads to significant removal of dyes. The effects of various parameters such as pH, contact time, concentration of surfactant and concentration of acid yellow 17 were checked for the removal of dye. The maximum amount of color extraction efficiency was found to be 95-98 % for 100 ppm dye solution.
