Faculty Development Programme On

ADVANCES IN MICROELECTRONICS,VLSI DESIGN AND OPTOELECTRONIC DEVICES WITH MIXED SIGNAL ANALYSIS

( under TEQIP, Phase-II, subcomponent 1.1)

at

ECE Department, Narula Institute of Technology

A two week faculty development programme on “ADVANCES IN MICROELECTRONICS,VLSI DESIGN AND OPTOELECTRONIC DEVICES WITH MIXED SIGNAL ANALYSIS” under TEQIP, Phase-II subcomponent 1.1 was held at the Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering of Narula Institute of Technology, under the patronage of JIS group from 13th January to 25th January,2014.The FDP aims to provide opportunities to faculty members, research scholars and post graduate students to enrich their teaching skill and research in the field of microelectronics, VLSI, optoelectronics and signal processing .The Programme also intends to develop the knowledge of participants for simulation with advanced software in the relevant field for inculcating learning values in students and guiding and monitoring their progress.

The FDP was attended by 54 participants from faculty members of ECE, EE, CSE,IT, CA, Physics, Mathematics department and PG students.

Prof. (Dr.) M.R. Kanjilal, HOD of ECE welcomed all the respected dignitaries and participants. Prof.(Dr.) D.Mitra, Principal of NIT appreciated the program organized by ECE dept in his speech. Prof.(Dr.) S.Sinha, Dean Management of NIT also encouraged for such activities. Prof.(Dr.) J.K.Das, Professor and Advisor R & D Projects and Consultancy of NIT highlighted TEQIP for sponsoring such type of programme. Prof.(Dr.) A.K.Mallick, Retd.

Professor of IIT-KGP & Professor of ECE Department, NIT emphasized the benefits of such kind of resourceful activity.

:

1st Day (13/01/14) Session I:

Prof. (Dr.) Hiranmay Saha, Centre of Excellence for Green Energy and Sensor Systems, Bengal Engineering and Science University has delivered keynote address on “Solar Photovoltaic : Current status and Future prospects”. In this session participants were learned the application of solar cell, installation of solar cell with minimum cost of materials and also to enhance the conversion efficiency of solar cells.

1st Day (13/01/14) Session II:

Prof. Sanatan Chottopadhya, Department of Electronic Science Centre for Research in Nano- science and Nano-technology, University of Calcutta has delivered a interactive lecture on

“Challenges and advances of field effect transistors (FETs) for future integrated circuit applications”. In this session participants were learned the Nano-wire Field Effect Transistors, Channel mobility booster Strained-Si MOSFETs and Process induced stress using SOS MOSFETs with high-k gate dielectrics.

2nd Day (15/01/14) Session I:

An informative lecture on “MICROELECTRONICS FABRICATION” was discussed by Prof.

Anirban Bhattacharyya, Radio Physics Department, University of Calcutta. In this session participants were learned the step by step procedure and different techniques regarding fabrication.

2nd Day (15/01/14) Session II:

Prof. Susanta Sen, Radio Physics Department, University of Calcutta has delivered a informative lecture on “CMOS DIGITAL CIRCUIT”. In this session participants were taught CMOS inverter characteristics, noise margin and also the design of complex combinational logic circuit using CMOS.

3rd Day (16/01/14) Session I:

Prof. Swapna Banerjee, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering Department, IIT Kharagpur, has illuminated on “VLSI BASED EMBEDDED SYSTEM FOR BIO-MEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION ”.In this session participants were gained with the knowledge of the on chip requirement of embedded system and a typical ultrasound system with very low cost and designed by her team in IIT Kharagpur. She inspired the participants to work on real time biomedical system using VLSI Technology and also gave some guidelines for this.

3rd Day (16/01/14) Session II:

Prof. Partha Bhattacharyya, Electronics & Tele Communication Engineering Department, BESU has discussed on “SCALING OF MOSFET ”.In this session participants were acquainted with significance of aspect ratio, constant voltage scaling , constant field scaling and small geometry effect. The need of scaling – problems and solutions, parameter wise explanations were thoroughly included.

4th Day (17/01/14) Session I:

Prof. Sheli Sinha Chaudhuri, Electronics & Tele Communication Engineering Department, JU has focused on “IMAGE SENSORS”. In this session participants were familiar with CCD and CMOS sensors along with their layout.

4th Day (17/01/14) Session II:

Prof. Salil K. Sanyal, Electronics & Tele Communication Engineering Department, JU has explained “CMOS STATIC AND DYNAMIC CIRCUIT FOR VLSI SYSTEM DESIGN ”.In this session participants realized the significance of static and dynamic circuits and their operation with precharge and evaluation phases.

A discussion on “THE CORDIC ALGORITHM” was delivered by Prof. Mrityunjoy Chakraborty, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering Department, IIT Khargapur.

In this session participants got the knowledge about this coordinate related algorithm and its implementation using FPGA.

6th Day & 7th Day (20/01/14 & 21/01/4) Hands on session :

A demonstration on “EDA TANNER TOOLS” was given by Mr. Pritam Banerjee from Trident Techlabs. At first participants were trained with schematic design and then layout design procedure .They had done the simulation with typical examples (different GATEs) and got the result.

8th Day (22/01/14) Session I:

Prof. Susmita Sur Kolay, Advanced Computing and Microelectronics Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata has delivered a useful lecture on “PHYSICAL DESIGN AUTOMATION AND PLACEMENT”. In this session participants gathered knowledge on IC design flow,CMOS fabrication technique,physical design,basic CMOS design rule and routing method.

8th Day (22/01/14) Session II:

An enlightening lecture on “NANOSCALE HETEROJUNCTION MOSFET” was discussed by Prof. Chandan Kumar Sarkar, Electronics & Tele Communication Engineering Department, Jadavpur University. In this session participants were gained with the knowledge of MOSFET utility,scaling,material selection,evoluation of heterostructure ,performance analysis with different parameters and key features of such structure.

9th Day (24/01/14) Hands on Session:

Dr. Anshuman Sarkar ,Electronics and Communication Engineering Department,Kalyani Govt.

Engg. College, has demonstrated on “SILVACO TCAD AND TANNER SPICE”. In this session participants were skilled with device simulation using Silvaco TCAD and circuit layout design using Tanner Spice with specific examples.

10th Day (25/01/14) Session I:

Prof. Abhirup Das Barman, Radio Physics Department, University of Calcutta has delivered a informative lecture on “DISPERSION AND NONLINEARITY IN OPTICAL FIBER COMMUNICATION”. In this session participants were learned from the basics of fiber optics to optical amplifier, cause and effect of dispersion-their types and nonlinearity.

VALEDICTORY SESSION:

The honorable personalities present in this occasion were Prof.(Dr.) A. Guha,Director,JIS Group;

Prof.(Dr.) P.K.Banerjee, Advisor, JIS Group; Prof.(Dr.) D.Mitra, Principal, NIT;Prof.(Dr.) S.Sinha, Dean Management, NIT;Prof.(Dr.) A.K.Mallick,Retd. Professor of IIT-KGP &

Professor of ECE Dept.,NIT.The Head of the Department of ECE, Prof.(Dr.) M.R.Kanjilal summarized the program. All the personalities appreciated the department for organizing the

FDP.The program was ended with vote of thanks by Mrs. Swati Banerjee, Asst. Prof., ECE Dept., NIT & Coordinator of the FDP.

OUTCOME :

All the sessions were very much informative. The discussed areas are of great benefit for the participants as the topics match with the current working domain. Participants were enlightened with the most widely used advance technologies in this domain. This in turn will help in research activity and placement opportunity.
