INTRODUCTION TO AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

(Embedded Systems)

Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70

Answer ONE Question from each Unit All Questions Carry Equal Marks

UNIT-I

1. (a) Explain the greatest success stories in the history of aircraft technology starting from Wright

brothers. [7M]

(b) Write in detail about the development of balloons during the 18th century that flew in air and created history in lifting a human being off the ground. [7M]

2. (a) What is an ornithopter? Can ornithopters be called flying machines? Justify your answer. [7M]

(b) With help of a neat diagram explain the anatomy of aircraft and write about each part of the

aircraft. [7M]

UNIT-II

3. (a) Discuss how do you measure the pressure by using manometers and mechanical gauges? [7M]

(b) What is air speed indicator, how it measures air speed and explain different air speed used in

aircraft? [7M]

4. (a) State Helmholtz vortex theorems. Applying these theorems on to flow over a wing calculate induced drag coefficient for an elliptical lift distribution? [7M]

(b) Derive the fundamental equation of Prandtl’s lifting line theory and obtain an expression for the induced drag coefficient for elliptic lift distribution. [7M]

UNIT-III

5. (a) What is skin friction? Explainthe compressibility effects on skin friction and explain the importance of skin friction in perspective of aerodynamics. [7M]

(b) What do you understand by the term viscosity? What is viscous flow and what are the viscous

effects on an aircraft in motion [7M]

MODEL QUESTION PAPER - I

(2)

6.(a) What are subsonic and supersonic speeds? What do you understand by subsonic and supersonic flows, explain in detail. [7M]

(b) What are high lift devices, explain about different high lift devices that aredeployed in an aircraft in detail. [7M]

UNIT-IV

7.(a) List out various types performance and stability conditions. Discuss about factors effecting the performance and stability of an aircraft briefly. [7M]

(b) Write about different types of rocket engines and write about different types of fuels used inrocket engines. [7M]

8.(a) What is mission profile? explain the difference between mission profile of an civil aircraft and fighter aircraft. [7M]

.(b) What are different types of air breathing engines? Explain the difference between Turbo prop and turbo fan engines with diagrams. [7M]

UNIT-V

9.(a) Explain different components of aircraft wing with help of diagram and explainabout the types load bared by each component. [7M]

.(b) What do you understand by the term human space exploration, write in detailabout human space exploration [7M]

10. (a) Explain the difference in construction of monocoque and semi monocoquefuselage construction with help of diagrams.

(b) What are the materials used in manufacture of fuselage components and explainwhich material properties are preferred for manufacturing of fuselage components. [7M]
