CBDT further extends time limit to furnish return of income and audit reports for AY 2021–22

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued a circular1(new circular) for further extension of time limit to furnish return of income and various audit reports for assessment year (AY) 2021–22. This is in view of the difficulties faced by taxpayers due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in electronic filing of various audit reports on the new income-tax e-filing portal.

The CBDT had earlier provided relaxation of timelines for various compliances specified under the

Income-tax Act, 1961 (the Act) for AY 2021–22 vide circulars dated 20 May 20212and 9 September 20213 (old circulars), respectively.

The extended time limits of various compliances for AY 2021–22 are tabulated below.

Note:

1. Although the due date for filing the return of income for AY 2021–22 is extended, taxpayers having a self-assessment tax liability exceeding INR100,000 will be liable to pay interest under section 234A of

the Act from the expiry of the original due dates.

2. For computation of interest under section 234A of the Act in case of a specified resident individual5, the self-assessment tax paid by him within the original due date (without any extensions as provided from time-to-time) shall be deemed to be the advance tax.
