Maize Outlook – September 2023
Maize or corn (Zea mays) is cultivated globally being one of the most important cereal crops worldwide. U.S. maize exports have reached 23.67 million metric tonnes (MMT), including 1.07 MMT exported from April 13 to April 20, 2023. Exports of 1,076,300 MT were down 17 percent from the previous week, but up 7 percent from the prior 4-week average. The destinations were primarily to Japan (342,600 MT), Mexico (256,900 MT), China (141,700 MT), Colombia (90,700 MT), and Peru (72,100 MT).

In India, Vanakalam (kharif) maize has been sown in around 83.33 lakh hectares (205.91 lakh acres) as on 8th September 2023 which is higher than 80.97 lakh hectares (200.08 lakh acres) covered during corresponding period of last year. Major maize growing states are Madhya Pradesh 17.44 lakh ha (43.10 lakh acres), Karnataka 15.15 lakh ha (37.44 lakh acres), Rajastan 9.42 lakh ha (23.28 lakh acres), Maharastra 9.04 lakh ha (22.34 lakh acres), Uttar Pradesh 7.63 lakh ha (18.86 lakh acres), Bihar 3.41 lakh ha (8.43 lakh acres), Gujarat 2.82 lakh ha (6.98 lakh acres), Odisha 2.61 lakh ha (6.45 lakh acres), Himachal Pradesh 2.38 lakh ha (5.88 lakh acres),

Jharkhand 2.27 lakh ha (5.61 lakh acres) and Telangana 2.16 lakh ha (5.34 lakh acres). According to 3rd Advance Estimates of Production of Food grains for 2022-23, all India Maize production estimate was 35.91 million tonnes.

Prices are likely to remain steady to firm, amid expectation of good demand from buyers and to trade in a range of Rs. 2300-2500 per qtl. During the month under review, market remained range bound and it’s likely to remain steady to firm in upcoming month as arrivals have almost finished and demand will slightly increase as Shravan month ends.
Gulabbagh market arrivals have decreased in the month of August compared to last month.
The monthly average prices have also decreased slightly, compared to the previous month of July 2023 amid lower demand. Whereas, in Devangere, Karnataka prices are steady compared to the previous month. During the month under review, bilty maize prices in Gulabbagh remained at Rs.

2220 per quintal in August 2023 which is similar to the previous July month. Likewise, the monthly average price for loose maize in Davangere, Karnataka, reached to Rs. 2351 per quintal in August 2023 from Rs. 2335 per quintal in July 2023.
