Concept Note
However good a Constitution may be, it is sure to turn out bad because those who are called to work it happen to be bad.
However bad a Constitution may be, it may turn out good if those who are called to work it, happen to be a good lot. —
Dr. B. R. Ambedkar India is a democracy governed by a written Constitution and the rule of law. The commencement of the Indian Constitution on January 26th 1950 was a noteworthy occasion not only in the political history of India but also in the history of India’s social construction. The Constitution granted protection to a large section of repressed and underprivileged persons from persistent social maladies such as social slavery, discriminations, deprivations practiced since long by the Indian society and at the same time guaranteed equality, justice- social,
economic and political, free from any form of discrimination be it on the basis of caste, creed, race, religion, region and sex etc. The Constitution further opened up new avenues of human welfare and development in the Indian subcontinent by providing not only the right to life, liberty, equality, and justice to the citizens/people but also affirmative protections in favor of deprived and underprivileged sections of the society.
Though the Constitution of India secures social, economic and political justice to all its citizens and confers the right to life, liberty, equality, and dignity to all, and the Government of India has made effort to achieve these goals set by the Constitution however, several challenges are faced till date by the Government as well as Citizens like: pervasive inequality on the basis of Caste, Religion, Region and sex etc, economic inequality and diminishing
avenues of opportunities, hurdles in access to justice etc. A large number of citizens are still deprived from the justice and equality and face deprivation, segregation and discrimination in the society due to the deeply rooted work culture in the Indian Government. Even after about 70 years of the commencement of the Indian Constitution the goals set by the Constitution are yet to be achieved.
In this background, the main objective of the seminar would be to critically discuss and deliberate upon the INDIAN
