NOTE

Estimates of Area, Production and Yield in respect of agricultural commodities vary from year to year depending upon, inter-alia, weather conditions, including temporal and spatial spread of rainfall, farmers’

perception of demand and supply of various agricultural products, emerging international scenario and policies of Union and State Governments. The impact of rainfall on agricultural production is quite significant as about 52% of the net area sown is dependent on rains for water. In the circumstances, the performance of the crop husbandry sector in one year alone is not indicative of the normal performance of the sector. In order to facilitate fair assessment of the general or normal performance of the crop husbandry sector, usually an average of five years’ estimates is taken.

The current set of normal estimates of area, production and yield have been worked out as the average of the estimates for 2011-12 to 2015-16.

States with comparatively insignificant estimates of area and production have been clubbed under ‘Others’ category. Next revision in the normal estimates would be done after release of final estimates for 2016-17.

In some cases, the total indicated may not be exactly equal to the sum of individual figures because of rounding off.
