Pondicherry University is a central university in Puducherry, India. Founded in 1985 by the Government of India, the university is a collegiate university with a jurisdiction spread over the Union Territories of Puducherry. It has 50,000 students in its 90 affiliated colleges including 10,000 students in the distance education mode.
The entire Academic structure was reorganized during the XI plan when the university broke all records with 300% growth in every sphere, includes special library for visually challenged and was rated top 10 in the country with NAAC accreditation of A grade. The faculties are from 22 states and students from 30 states and union territories. In 2012 it received from president of India, the best Institution award for PU. Pondicherry University is located in a campus spread over 780 acres (320 ha), facing the Bay of Bengal on the East Coast Road.
The Department of Chemistry started in the year 1987, offers 2 year M.Sc. (Chemical Sciences), 5 year Integrated M.Sc., (Chemistry) and Ph.D.
programs. The Department of Chemistry is well equipped to support high quality teaching and international standard research activities. The Department has highly qualified faculty members to conduct research in forefront areas of Chemistry.
Research output is recognized by publications in International and National journals and by awards.
There are about 75 Ph.D. scholars engaged in research activities. The Department is supported by the DST, Govt. of India through FIST program and by the UGC SAP (DRS) programs to achieve academic potentials

Puducherry is one of the most popular tourist spots for national and international tourists. A unique experimental city Auroville, the brain child of the Mother, whose inhabitants are drawn from all parts of the world is situated on the outskirts of the city. There are several temples, churches, monuments, parks and mosques which attract tourists. Promenade Beach is the popular stretch of beachfront in the city of Puducherry, along the Bay of Bengal. It is a 1.2-km long stretch in Pondicherry, starts from War Memorial and end at Dupleix Park on the Goubert Avenue. The beach at Chunnambar also known as Plage Paradiso or 'Paradise Beach' is located near the mouth of the backwater.
