Alcoholic eJttracts of two hundred and ninety two botanically Identified plant species have been tested for a wide variety of biological activities including chemotherapeutic and pharmacological activities. Biological activities have been confirmed in fractions of 46 of these eJttracts. Follow-up studies have been carried out in some plants with confirmed activity. The active principles and results of these studies have also been reported.

Results of biological screening of 2348 plant materials from 2256 plant species for a wide range of activities has been reported in earlier papers of the series

The present communication deals with biological activity data of 294 plant materials from 292 taxa.

The screening results of some parts of Chonemorpha

fragrans 7

(= C. macrophy/la) LF(2060), Curcuma

aromatica2 RH(385), Elaeocarpus ganitrust SB(131), Euphorbia antiquorumt ST(l75), Hydnocarpus laurif- olia4 PX(953), Operculina terpethum2 RT(377), Pandanus fascicularis2 (= P. odoratissimus) PL(369) and Vitex negundo3PX(663), have been reported in the preceeding papers of the series. The screening results of the extract of other parts, of these plants, are given in the present communication. The extracts of the same part of Crescentia cujete7 PX(l833) and Combretum roxburghii2 ( = C. decandrum) PL(386), collected from different parts of the country, at different times, have been screened and the results are recorded here. The number of new species of plants given in the present communication are, therefore, 282. The total results

reported so far in the series, thus cover 2642 materials from 2538 plant species. The plant species named earlier as Abroma augusta2 PL(400) has subsequently been identified as Sterculia fulgens Corn. ex Kastern.

Mat.rials and Methods

Details of collection of plant materials, extraction and fractionation as well as techniques of various biological tests are described in the earlier papers of the series

summerised in Table 1. The plant extracts which showed activities were fractionated and the fractions were tested for activity. The screening results of these plants are recorded in Table 2.

Discussion

Of the 294 plant extracts tested, activity was observed in the extracts of 46 plant species. The extracts exhibited from weak to high order of activities. Furthermore, CNS activity was confirmed in 6 extracts, CVS in 4, spasmolytic in 7, diuretic in 10, oxytocic in II, antiviral in 2, antimicrobial in I, antifertility in 4 and hypoglycemic in I.

As a result of follow-up studies on active plants the chemical compounds isolated are as follows:

Sesquiterpenes, agarol and gmelefuran and coumarin- liganan, aquillochin from Aquilaria aga/locha9 (2358).

The triterpene friedelin from Antidesma menasu10 (2468) was found to have diuretic activity and was the

most active constituent of the plant. Friedelin at 25 and 64 mg/kg dose exhibited 95 to 99% activity compared to chlorothiazide. Its Na

+

excretion ratio of 0.72 was poor as compared to 2.30 of chlorothiazide. The active principle or'Lonicera japonical t (2409) (anti- implantation) was a new glycoside, the structure of which is being elucidated. It had antifertility activity.

lsorhamnetin and quercetin were obtained from the active n-butenol soluble fraction of of alcoholic extract of Pluchea lanceolata12 (2322) (anti-implantation).

Follow-up studies on plants reported active in earlier paperst -8 resulted in the isolation of the following compounds: (+ )-sinactine, apocavidine, stylopine, (+ )-cavidine, corlumine, dihydrosangui- narine and protopine from the leaves and stems of Corydalis meifoliat 3 (2293) (spasmolytic). Of these alkaloids dehydrocavidine was a new base. The remaining alkaloids, although known, were isolated for the farsttime from this plant. The biological activity of some of these alkaloids has been studied earlier.

Corlumine is used as a convulsan tI 4. In su b-con vulsive

doses it has little effect on blood pressure but the

Corluminehas little effecton the perfused frog heart.

Its effecton isolated intestine and uterus were found inconsistent.Protopine had an inhibitor) action on isolatedfrog heart or ncrves and a stimulatory action on pea-pig intestine.Thc base had beenscreenedon transPlanted hard mouse tumor sarcoma 180 and Ehrlishmousecarcinoma.Inhibitionof tumor induced by protopine was significant and associated with considerable cytotoxic side effects. The base when injected intraveneously in rabbits and guinea pigs, excrteda moderatc pressore effect and sensitizedthe animal to induction of cardiac arrythmias by adrenalinels. Yenhusomineisolated from C. meifo/ia is an analgesicand hypotensivel6.

Cavidine,protopine, corlumine, yenhusomineand dehydrocavidinehad non-specificspasmolyticactivity in isolated guinea pig ileum17. The proaporphines, crotsparine, N-methylcrotsparineand N,O-dimethyl- crotsparinc;thc dibydroproaporphincs: crotsparinine and N-mcthylcrotsparinine and the aporphines:

sparsiflorinc wcre isolated from Croton bonp/an- dionum18(387).Of these bases N-methylcrotsparine was a potent hypotensive agent, N-methylcrots- parinine produced an initial sharp transient fall of blood pressure followed by a gradual sustained hypotension at 3 to 5 mg/kg dose. Six bisbenzyl- isoquinolinealkaloids:pendulin, cocsulin,cocsulinin, cocsolin,pendulinin and pendin were isolated from Coccu/uspendu/usl9 (433). Of these bases pendulin was found to be a hypotcnsive agent and cocsulinin was found acti~ in tissue culture against human carcinoma of the nasopharynx

Abnormal Erythrina alkaloids isococculidine,isococculine,coccuvine, coccuvinine, cocculitine,cocculitinine,coccudinone, cocculimine, coccudienone,coccolineand coccolininewereisolated from the leaves of Coccu/uslaurifolwro (314).The known proaporphine alkaloids stepharine and the morphinandienone alkaloid sebiferine were also isolated for the fmt time from the plant. The quaternary aporphine alkaloids laurifoline, magnof- lorine, boldine methochloride and isocorydine methochloride were isolated from the quarternary alkaloidal fraction of the alkaloidal mixture of the plant. Thesequaternary bases werereported to exhibit d-tubocuranine like action on sciatic nerve skeletal muscle preparation. These bases also induced hypotensive cffects in dogs, cats and rabbits. This activity was found due to considerable ganglionic locking action on various sympathetic and parQ- sympathctic ganglia. IsococculidinC', the major alkaloid of the leaves of C. laurifoliuswas found to have neuromuscular blocking and hypotensive activities21.The known quaternary bases; magno- florine,lotusineand magnocurarinechloridesisolated

cinerea) (882). Precalyone showed anticancer activity apinst P-388 lymphocytic lcukaemia 23. Naphtha- quinone derivatives, arncbin-I, arncbin-2, arncbin-3, arnebin-4, arnebin-5, and arnebin-7 from the roots of Arnehia nohili.f24 (579.) were screened for biological activities. Arnebin-2 and arnebin-7 were found inactive in anticancer tests. Arnebin-l was active in WA(4mg/kgT/C 27%) and in PS(3 mg/kgT/C 130~Q:

arnebin-3 was active in WA (10 mg/kg TIC 26'/..) and arnebin-4, also, in WA (10 mg/kg T/C 26/~)2s. Further, arnebins showed good wound healing properties26.

Glaucine, roemerine, anonaine, corydine, isocorydine, norisocorydine and norcorydine were isolated from

Annona squamosa2 ⁷(583). Of these bases corydine and

isocorydine were reported to possess anticancer activity28.

Liriodine, isocorydine, boldine, laurolliptine, actinodaphnine and laurotetanine were isolated from Litsea glutinosa28(375) which has spasmolytic and anticancer activity. Liriodine and isocorydine have been reported active against human epidcrmoid carcinomaof the nasopharynx28.Boldinehad sedative properties. It did not cause addiction and its effects were not cumulative. It had no local anaesthetic, analgesic or antipyretic activity. The base also possesseddiureticactivity and increasedsecretions of liver, salivary glands, mucous membrane and to a certain extent it increased secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
