1. PREMISES OF PROJECT

The premises of the project stemmed when Ruuris Innovations received an email from Majuli District Commissioner office requesting for information about the Arsenic removal filters. A team under the supervision of Shri Narasimma Prasad of Ruuris Innovations, Chennai, visited the Majuli DC office to get more information and to collect first- hand knowledge about the water contamination levels.

During the subsequent visit two arsenic removal water filters were handed over the Majuli DC for checking the quality of the filtered water.

The Arsenic removal water filters were tested by the Deputy Commissioner, Majuli and Public Health Engineering Department along with a few other products. Source water from various villages were brought in and filtered using the Arsenic removal filters. The source and the filtered water were tested for percentage of arsenic removal and quality of the filtered water. This process was continued for a period of 5 months and the results were monitored for consistency and quality.

After being satisfied with the results of the Arsenic removal filters provided by Ruuris Innovations, Majuli DC Shri. Pallav Gopal Jha, apprised the Honourable Chief Minister of Assam Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal and initiated proposed the idea of ARSENIC FREE VILLAGE. The Honourable Chief Minister of Assam Shri. Sarbananda Sonowal allocated five lakh INR for the implementation of ARSENIC FREE PAGE : 3

2. VILLAGE SELECTION

The district administration after getting multiple test reports of Arsenic removal water filters from Public heath Engineering testing lab, Majuli, selected the villages based up on the highest levels of Arsenic contamination. After the selection of the villages public opinion was gathered through the panchayats.

The final list of villages was finalised with consensus from all the stakeholders involved including the District Administration, Village panchayats, social groups and inputs from the local press.

Supported from the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Fund, and on an experimental basis, the district administration led by Shri Pallav Gopal Jha has conducted free distribution of Arsenic Removal Filters to the poor families living in the areas facing Arsenic contamination problems in the river island district. In the first phase of the initiative, the district administration has selected Karatipar & Dakhinpat GPs, which are among the most arsenic affected GPs in the island district.

As an alternative option to ensure clean and safe drinking water to people of Majuli, the DC Majuli Shri Pallav Gopal Jha & ADC Majuli Shri Chinmoy Nath distributed free Arsenic Removal filters to 90 poor families of Major Chapori & Kuli Chapori villages in a programme held at Karatipar GP office on 21st April, 2017.

The second distribution programme was held at Dakhinpat GP office on the 23th April, 2017 in which DC Shri Pallav Gopal Jha handed over such special filters to another 90 poor families exposed to arsenic contamination from Jogi-Nathgaon & Dakhinpat Naosalia Villages.

The purpose of the pilot was to create an awareness among the people about the dangers of Arsenic contamination and the proactive efforts taken by the Government of Assam in addressing the issues concerning the health and safety of its citizen.

Mother Nature has given us the best and immunized way of filtering and treating water. Clay and sand sintered in patented, tried and tested method by IMMT – CSIR (Council of Scientific & Industrial Research) gives you the CPO Natural Terafil®™ Water Filter which is retrofitted in best water containers designed and moulded by CIPET, the Premier Institute for Plastics technology, who guarantee virgin, toxic free, and food grade containers supply.

THE PROCESS

Nano clay particles form the crux of the Terafil candle. The pores in the candles are smaller than the Nano-sized microbes like bacteria and virus, thus enabling the candles to filter the pathogens in the top layer itself, thus enabling the clean, good water to percolate and pass through it and get dropped in the bottom container.

The capillary holes formed within the candle structure are so complex that it does not allow turbid materials, other waste solids, minerals and metal complexes to flow outside its structure.

Therefore, the murky water which also has iron particles and pathogens gets filtered and clean water flows down due to gravitational pull and gets collected in

Each filters contains 3 numbers of Terafil®™ Cartridges, 3 numbers of Arsenic removal

Cartridges. The Terafil®™ cartridges can be used for 3 years and Arsenic cartridges has

to be replaced after 5000 litres or once a year. The filters does not require electricity to run.

Post the distribution of Arsenic removal filters by Majuli DC , Team members of Ruuris Innovations visited some of the beneficiaries homes to check if the filters were fitted properly and also to check the quality of the source and the filtered water. Water samples were collected and handed over to the PHE laboratory of Majuli for testing.
